WHAT IS THE ADVANCED DEVELOPMENT CENTRE? Welcome to the Cardiff City Football Club Advanced Development Centre. If you are new to the Advanced Development Centre programme you may be wondering what the programme involves and how the centre may help your son achieve his potential. The Advanced Development Centres are part of the Player Pathway at Cardiff City Football Club. The Player Pathway has four stages and has been carefully developed to ensure that Cardiff City Football Club provides all local male junior players with opportunities to learn, develop and have fun in safe and challenging learning environments. The Player Pathway also allows young players who demonstrate talent and application to progress, with the eventual aim of being registered within the Cardiff City FC Academy programme. The Player Pathway operates on four tiers within the Cardiff City FC family and ensures that players can move up and down the pyramid based on the continual assessment of their individual needs. The tiers are Tier One The Academy: if a player demonstrates a level of excellence and the potential to be an academy prospect he may be invited to trial at the Academy following a successful screening day. If the player meets the criteria outlined in the clubs philosophy and adapts well to the Academy environment the club may decide to offer the player a schoolboy registration. Tier Two Advanced Development Centre: these centres are managed by the Academy. The purpose of these centres is to provide a first class, second tier development across South Wales which mirrors the Academy environment with the aim of developing and preparing players with the ultimate aim of progressing to the Academy. This is the tier your son has been invited to participate in for at least the next 6 weeks. Tier Three Advanced Coaching Centre: these centres are managed by the Community Foundation. The purpose of these centres are to provide a greater number of talented players with a positive learning environment in which they can develop with the eventual aim to progress to the ADC's. Tier Four Grassroots football/ Football4all The Community Foundation provides football4all centres in conjunction with local leisure centres which allow players of any ability to participate in a fun and safe learning environment under the banner of Cardiff City Football Club. 3
The Advanced Development Centres are a not for profit, self sustained programme of coaching centres which aim to provide local talented players with an exceptionally high level of coaching and holistic player development in an environment which encourages playercentred coaching, intelligent decision making and unorthodox creativity, thus mirroring the philosophy and working practices of the Academy. The Advanced Development Centres work on a 6 week revolving door basis. Players are reviewed and retained or not retained on a 6 week cycle. At the end of the 6 week period the decision to retain or not retain is discussed with parents and all players will receive an action plan based on a review of the previous 6 weeks. As the Advanced Development Centres are a self sustaining entity players are therefore expected to contribute training fees in order to cover the costings. CLUB PHILOSOPHY AND WORKING PRACTICES Under Premier League rules every Academy must have a clear philosophy which underpins their working practices and style of play. Cardiff City FC Academy philosophy is derived directly from the club philosophy and heavily influences the coaching practices and playing styles delivered within the centre. This is essential to ensure that any transition for players between the Advanced Development Centres and the Academy is a smooth one. The Cardiff City Football Club Philosophy As the sole senior Football Club in the capital of Wales, Cardiff City have a responsibility to represent an entire nation whenever it takes the field. It is important therefore that the team retains a Welsh heart and is built on the solid foundations of our Football Academy. The production of young players has become and integral part of the clubs football philosophy, with the success of the club academy giving rise to a number of home-grown talent. This supports the club in competing at the higher levels of domestic football. There is nothing more inspirational for Cardiff City supporters than to see local born players wearing the Cardiff City shirt with pride and distinction and representing the locality and its community. The Cardiff City Football Club Academy Playing Philosophy Attacking: an efficient, economical, measured, possession based attacking strategy where pass quality, reasoned and timely support and movement and intelligent individuality, lead to penetration through the thirds of the field to provide goal-scoring opportunities if appropriate counter-attacking possibilities are denied. Defending: a controlled, calculated and assertive defending strategy whereby all players contribute to team defensive efficiency and all understand the tactical objectives being implemented in order to regain possession of the ball in order to attack the opposition. 4
The Cardiff City FC Academy Coaching Philosophy We will deliver competition driven sessions which encourage a range of intensity play and the understanding of game tempo. Our coaches will manage their interventions ensuring adequate playing time, touches on the ball and a balance of providing vital feedback. We will not look only to improve weaknesses or highlight mistakes, we will also reinforce the positives and improve their strengths! Individuality and difference must be nurtured; having an edge is vital. We must understand the person before we can develop the player and then have the ability to adapt coaching styles to suit the holistic (Technical/ Tactical/ Character/ Physical) picture is imperative when assessing the players in the Foundation stage of their developmental journey. WHAT ARE CARDIFF CITY ACADEMY LOOKING FOR? Cardiff City Football Club are looking to recruit the most exciting players across Wales and England. In line with the Football Club philosophy players will be encouraged to play throughout all outfield positions during the inter-mural games nights when aged between 7 and 11 and encouraged to play in a variety of positions after the age of 12. This practice mirrors that applied within the Academy. Cardiff City Football Club Academy endeavour to recruit and develop players who are curious, creative, intelligent and mentally resilient. Players who understand their roles and responsibilities within the team and within the football club. Cardiff City players must be technically efficient passers of the ball who are expressive, 1v1 dominant, can beat opposition players with and without the ball and are comfortable in possession. Ultimately Cardiff City Football Club are looking for players who understand and can change the game. 5
At Cardiif City FC Academy we recognise that there are many types of player. We strongly believe that the future player will be a combination of many of these attributes. 6
Below: attributes desired by Cardiff City Academy in potential players. INTER-MURAL FIXTURES The Advanced Development Centre have their own inter-mural fixture list, giving players an opportunity to further enhance the skills they have developed in training. Due to the location of the Dragons ADC games will be organised at regular intervals but will not be part of the set inter-mural games programme. The boys will play a series of small sided games against all of the centres. The emphasis is on boys being comfortable in possession of the ball, being creative and expressive in possession and learning by making decisions (And if necessary mistakes). The coaches are briefed to support players learning through questioning, guiding, and trial and error. You will rarely hear our coaches work using direct instruction in order to facilitate player-centred decision making opportunities. In some circumstances you may notice that there is one coach managing both teams. Please do not be alarmed by this. Our coaches all work for the same club, share the same ethos and work to the same philosophy and learning outcomes. Our coaches are expected to develop all players in the Cardiff City FC Advanced Development Centre programme. PLAYER REVIEW 7
All players will receive an individual Player Review on a 6 week basis. This review will be based on the players progression over the previous 6 weeks. Each player will receive one strength and one area of development in each of the four key long term development areas (Technical; Tactical; Character; Physical). Of the four areas to improve the coach will cite one area as being the 'Focus Development Area' and provide a short recommendation of how this can be developed. Player reviews will also be delivered on the final week of the 6 week coaching cycle. The coach will then inform you if the club wishes to retain your son at the Advanced Development Centre. During this short review you will be able to speak to your sons coach and be able to ask any questions that you may have. If the review needs to be extended past the allocated 5 minute slot then an alternative time will need to be organised with the coach or centre manager. DISCLAIMER Please note that, with the exception of those players registered on YD8 forms, Cardiff City FC do not accept liability for any injuries or medical conditions sustained by trialist players during trial period(s) and Development Centre training at Cardiff City FC.
