Kent Valley Early Learning Center th Avenue South Kent, WA Frequently Asked Questions Kindergarten students begin their first day of school on Thursday, September 3. Kindergarten families will be invited to meet with the school for our Family Connection Conference days which are August 31, September 1 and 2. These conferences allow the teachers to meet with all families and learn more about your student before school starts for them on September 3. You will receive a notice later in the summer with information on the conference times, but do plan for them as this is an important time to connect with your child s teacher. Enjoy your Summer! We look forward to meeting you all! GENERAL What do I need the first day of school for my child? Your child will need a backpack for school. A list of supplies will be provided before the first day of school. What time does school start and end? School starts at 9:20 a.m. and ends at 3:28p.m. What is the Main telephone number for the school? The Main Office number is What do I do if my child will be late or is home ill? Please call our Attendance line if your child is ill or late for school. The Attendance number is Option #1. How do I pick my child up from school for appointments? When picking up your student from school you must enter the building from the front doors on 4 th Ave. You will then need to go to the Main Office and sign your student out. Anyone picking up a student (parents, friends, relatives) will be required to show identification and must be listed in our system under emergency contacts.

Is my child in the classroom all day? No, your child also has library, PE, music and recesses. If I move or change my phone number do I need to tell the school? If you move or change your phone number be sure to let the office know right away. If there is an emergency and we need to contact you, we must have the correct information in our system in order to reach you. Please let us know if your emergency contacts change as well. What if my child loses his coat at school? We do have a lost and found near the Main Office. However, please be sure to put your child s name on all coats in permanent marker to help identify the missing items. If I want to speak to my child s teacher what must I do? You will need to call or your child s teacher to set up a time to talk or meet. The teachers are very busy in the classroom all day and prefer to meet before or after school. If I want to celebrate my child s birthday with cupcakes at school is that ok? You must arrange this with the teacher prior to bringing in treats. Each teacher has a different way they celebrate birthdays at school. or call your teacher a few days prior to your child s birthday to arrange a time. MEALS Does my child need to eat breakfast each day at home? There is FREE optional breakfast provided every day for the students. How do I pay for my child s lunches? You can pay for your child s lunch online at the district website (the online application for the 15/16 school year will be available mid-august)or in-person in the lunchroom. How do I get free or reduced priced lunch? You can apply for reduced or free lunches online at the district website https://www.mealappnow.com/man/splash.php or turn in the paper form to the school office. Regular Priced Lunch $ 2.50 Reduced Price Student Lunch Free Milk Only $.50

Does my child need to bring a lunch the first day of school? Your student must bring a lunch the first day of school or charge their lunch to their school lunch account. Be sure to do the online registration for free and reduced lunches prior to the start of school to avoid being billed for the first few days of school. TRANSPORTATION How do I get my child to school? You are free to choose to drive your student to school and drop them off in the parent load and unload zone. However, all students are assigned a bus route by transportation prior to start of school. If you have changes to be made to your child s transportation plan you will need to contact Transportation directly at May I ride the bus with my child? No, parents are not allowed to ride the bus with the students. If you have further questions please contact transportation. Do I have to meet my child at the bus stop? There must be an adult at your child s bus stop each day to meet your child. It should be someone that you have specified to the school as an approved emergency person if you are unable to be there. If the driver does not recognize the person or you have not communicated with Transportation and the school, your child will not be let off the bus and the child will be taken to the Kent School District Transportation Department. What time do I pick my child up at the bus stop? Please be to the bus stop 5 minutes prior to the scheduled time you are given by transportation, both on the drop off and pick up times as not all clocks are in sync as well as traffic and other unforeseen issues that may come up. If my child s bus stop is at a school, do I need to wait with them for the bus? Yes, you need to wait with your student in the morning and be there to pick them up in the afternoon no matter where the bus stop is located. Who can pick my child up from school and the bus? Your child will only be released to persons you have indicated as your emergency contacts. They will have to show identification to be allowed to take your child from the school. For your child s safety will also need identification when picking up your child. (The buses tend to run a little slower at the beginning of the year, so be prepared to wait for the bus to arrive.)

If my student is not going to be riding the bus and I will be dropping my student off and picking my student up; where is your drop off and pick up area located? There is a designated area in the back of the school for drop off and pick up (west side of building). Please do not use the bus lanes for this purpose. HEALTH ROOM What if my child has an accident at school or gets wet on the playground? Keep a change of clothes at all times in your child s back pack in a Ziploc gallon size bag. Include a change of clean pants and clean underwear. The Health Room does not have enough extra clothes to provide for accidents. If my child needs to take medication at school what must I do? You must meet with the school nurse in order to have the medication at school. The number for our nurse is RECESS What should my child wear to recess? Your child does attend recess each day and should dress with tennis shoes or boots and warm coats. Our student play outside in all types of weather. Your child should be dressed appropriately for the weather. What may my child play at recess? Please begin to teach your child now that there is no fighting at recess. We do not allow any type of violent games to be played at recess. No shooting, biting or killing games period. We welcome games such as soccer, racing, freeze tag. PTA How do I sign up with the PTA? Please go to your home school s website, either Neely O Brien or Kent Elementary to sign up with the PTA.

VOLUNTEERING How do I volunteer in my child s class? In order to volunteer in your child s classroom or go on a field trip, you will need to pass the Kent School District background check. This will involve fingerprinting here at KVELC. The process takes approximately 2 weeks, so plan accordingly. When can I come and get my finger prints done? You are welcome to have your fingerprints taken on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30 to 3:00. You may want to have them done at your home school either Kent Elementary or Neely O Brien, just be sure to have them send us a copy as well for our records. What if I have a criminal record? Can I still volunteer? Possibly; you will need to answer truthfully to all questions on the Disclosure form and the Kent School District Security department will make the final determination. This process will take a bit longer than the normal fingerprinting process; so plan accordingly.

Meet the Teacher session times are listed below. Each session will last about 45 minutes. It is necessary that you attend one of these sessions.
