Deforestation and Development The changing value of natural forest for rural livelihoods (Task ID037) Michael Schnegg & João Baptista Poligono florestal do Sanguengue, Huambo, Angola, May 2013 Village of Ndala, Bié, Angola, March 2012
Objectives: - Understand the social dynamics of deforestation Research deforestation as human conduct Research the self-motivations that support local practices over the forests (social and individual expectations, ambitions, necessities behind practices that lead to deforestation) Research the ramifications of local conduct beyond the local scope and its articulations with wider discourses, ideologies, development activities, and policies - Identify steps that can be undertaken to foster the sustainable management of forests
This anthropological project subdivides in four subtasks: (A) Knowledges of Deforestation (B) Practices of Deforestation (C) Drivers of Conduct (D) Capacity Strengthening and Service Development
(A) Knowledges of Deforestation - Deforestation is a contested category - Analyze popularized and scientific understandings of what deforestation is historically spatially by social organization (e.g., by gender, economic status, Political age, etc.). Developmental (e.g. NGOs) Academic - We intend to explore the contrasting views, perceptions, and understandings of the issue of deforestation
(B) Practices of Deforestation - The local residents practices of deforestation - Explore the very different uses of forest Fire Charcoal production Timber extraction Non-timber products Agriculture Medicine Symbolic - The self-reasoning triggering local conduct over forests: how do those residents of rural communities targeted as contributing to deforestation perceive, justify, contextualize, and rationalize their actions? We hope to identify the types of practices over forests locally performed but also access the view local residents have on that
(C) Drivers of Conduct - Research the ramifications of local conduct beyond the local scope - Research the translocal dimension that these conducts carry with them How translocal socio-economic dynamics are implied in local conduct toward deforestation? What are the key global social drivers inducing practices of deforestation in rural communities? - Access the drivers and subjectivities regardless of their places of formation behind local conduct.
(D) Capacity Strengthening and Service Development - Identify steps that can be undertaken to foster the sustainable management of forests - Integration of heterogeneous stakeholders at different scales Develop and strength a scientific network with countries, institutions, researchers, and stakeholders and generate interdisciplinary relevant results to be debated in the public and used for policy making processes.
Methodological approach: Both anthropological case studies in Angola and Zambia are conducted by one Postdoc and one Ph.D. researcher - Long-term fieldwork - Discourse analysis - Participant observation - Freelists - Multi-sited ethnography - Network analysis - Participatory rural appraisal - Stakeholder analysis
Fieldwork in Angola: - Direct collaboration with the task 137 Deforestation monitoring in the Huambo province from using detection technologies and geographic information systems leaded by Dr. Virginia Lacerda Quartin from the Faculty of Agronomy at the University José Eduardo dos Santos, Angola. - Participation at the International Conference, Proteccao e Maneio das Florestas Angolanas [Protection and Management of the Angolan Forests], at the Faculty of Agronomy, Huambo, Angola, 14 and 15 May Starting of the project s subtask A) Knowledges of Deforestation Review of four main contemporary bodies of knowledge on forests and deforestation in Angola: - the local - the governmental - the academic - the developmental
Fieldwork in Angola: - (May 2013) Fieldwork at the Poligono Florestal do Sanguengue, 22 km from the Municipality of Cachiungo, at the Huambo highlands region suggested by the Angolan project. - Our task in this project is to present anthropologic information from below to complement the remote sensing data from above that the Angolan project (task 137) will provided.
