4 Since 2011 Germany has decided clearly to go ahead with DAB All eleven public and a lot of commercial broadcasters provide about 100 full programmes in total Additionally we have a nationwide DAB ensemble which covers 20 programmes A second nationwide ensemble is at a planning stage Norway has confirmed a FM switchover for % of Norwegians are using DAB receivers Switzerland has plans to switch off FM starting in 2019 In total 9 ensembles are ON AIR with in total 100 full programmes Danish Radio has updated its systems to DAB+ and pushes a further regionalisation probably this year Poland has installed now 17 regional ensembles which cover 10 countrywide and approx. 30 regional programmes UK is running 140 transmitters to reach 95% percent of UK listeners Two national ensembles and a lot of regional and local ensembles are available Italy, Austria, Netherlands, Belgium etc. are pushing their networks every month DAB in Europe A successful story 4

5 DAB transmission is much greener than analogue transmission FM: 20 kw/ 1 channel = 20.0 kw per channel DAB+: 5 kw/15 channels = 0.3 kw per channel Simple studio infrastructure Multiple Encoders plus an Ensemble Multiplexer allow to manage all features of Digital Radio Clear sound without interference also under critical reception conditions Additional data services PAD and NPAD (Program Associated Data, Non PAD) Dynamic Label or Dynamic Label+ (artist, title etc.) Slideshows (e.g. cover pictures) EPG (Electronic Program Guide) Journaline (News Service with Text-to-Speech possibility) TPEG for Traffic Telematics Services Service Linking DAB DAB and DAB FM/AM Traffic and other announcements Benefits of Digital Radio 5

6 A modern DAB platform is based on pure IP contribution and distribution protocols (Encapsulation of DAB Interfaces) is the standardised IP protocol (ETSI TS ) to transport a complete ensemble multiplex from the Ensemble Multiplexer to the transmitter sites Based on DCP (Distribution and Communications Protocol ETSI TS ) Reed Solomon Error Correction Fragmentation Packet Repetition For the contribution of Audio services the Fraunhofer protocol MUXENC or with limitations is used Based on DCP Extended with control commands for full configuration of remote encoders Allows the transmission of PAD Network synchronisation between Encoder, Multiplexer and Transmitter is realised via NTP Interfaces and Protocols 6

7 The standard Audio coding format DAB+ is based on MPEG 4 AAC HE-AAC-V1: Extension with SBR = Spectral Band Replication artificial generation of higher frequency bands HE-AAC-V2: Extension with PS = Parametric Stereo Mono coding + artificial generation of stereo signal SBR makes sense for data rates 80 kbit/s and PS for data rates 48 kbit/s Possible data rates: n x 8 kbit/s, with n=1 24 (max. 192-kbit/s) Sampling frequencies: 16/24 khz with SBR and 32/48 khz without SBR The half-sampling frequencies are related only to the codec core (internally) Due to spectral band replication the full bandwidth of an audio signal can be measured There is no bandwidth limitation by the Nyquist criteria Good quality at kbit/s for a stereo signal, perfect quality at 128 kbit/s Surprisingly good quality at 24 kbit/s for a stereo signal DAB+ Coding 7

8 Avoid cascading of Audio Codecs Use a local DAB+ Audio Encoder in your studio to feed in the original source Audio signal Choose a PAD bit rate not higher than 10% of the Audio bit rate Audio bit rate = Coding bit rate + Reed-Solomon Error Correction + PAD Example: Nominal bit rate: 96 kbit/s Real bit rate 76 kbit/s! F =48 khz and PAD =10 kbit/s) Depending on the program choose instead of SBR a sampling frequency of 32 khz Avoid to use Sound Processing for the Audio signal or use dedicated DAB Sound Processors How to reach optimised Audio quality? 8
