1 LESSON PLAN In-car safety Learning objectives For children to know that they should always be in a car seat/booster when travelling in a car. For children and parents to know that children should use the right car seat/booster for their weight. For children to know which side of a car they should get out of. 2 Introducing the theme Discussion establishing what traffic is and that it can be dangerous if we are not careful. Write Car Clever on the board and explain that the children are going to learn about travelling more safely in cars, to learn to be car clever. Some children will be from families which do not own cars but say that it is important for everyone to learn this because we all travel in cars sometimes. Activity 1: A safe place to sit A story about a journey in a car to help children understand a safe place to sit minutes A digital projector and screen connected to the internet Game: Safe place to sit (Ref: TRC093) Az and Molly are being driven to the park by Molly s dad. They get into their booster seats and grumble about wasting time having to get into them. Dad points out that he has to wear one, though he is tall enough to mean that he doesn t need a booster! The traffic is held up on the way. A police officer comes to the car and explains that there s been a collision. Dad asks if anyone was hurt and they hear that a girl was using an adult seat belt, but wasn t sitting in a booster seat, so she slipped under the seat belt and was hurt. When they eventually get to the park they are impatient to get out and go on the swings. Molly gets out of the unsafe side of the car just as a motorcycle whizzes past. When the children have seen and heard the story, discuss the key points: Why did they have to stop on the way to the park? Why was a policeman there? Molly nearly had a serious collision with a motorcycle what happened? What two important things did Molly and Az learn that day? Talk about what else children should do (or not do) to be safer when travelling in a car. The key points are: to get out of the car on the pavement side, and not into the road to avoid distracting the driver (it s ok to talk to the driver, but squabbling, arguing, shouting or asking the driver to look at something can be distracting, as the driver has to pay attention to the road) not to put hands or heads out of the window not to throw anything out of the window not to open the door or window unless an adult says that you can to leave door handles alone.

3 Activity 2: Car seats and boosters An activity looking at different types of car seat and booster, to help children understand what they should be sitting on when travelling in a car minutes Poster: Booster cushion (Ref: TINF1397) Poster: Booster seat (Ref: TINF1394) Poster: Car seat (Ref: TINF1393) Car seat or booster (optional) This activity involves using the three accompanying posters showing a range of car seats and boosters. The three cards show: car seat suitable for children 9-18kg (approximately 9 months to 4 years) booster seat suitable for children 15-25kg and up to 36kg (approximately 4-6 years and upwards) booster cushion suitable for children 22-36kg (approximately 6-11 years) Point to one of the car seats/boosters and ask the class if anyone uses one like it. Do this for each example, using a show of hands to find out which type is used most often. Ask the children what they must also use when they are sitting in a car seat/booster, giving the clue that it makes a click when it is fitted (answer: a seat belt). Explain to the children that using a car seat/booster with a seat belt will help to keep them safe on car journeys. Emphasise that young children should not use a seat belt without the right car seat/booster as they could be hurt by the belt if the car stops suddenly or is in a crash even if they re not going quickly. Bringing a real car seat or booster into the classroom will also help this activity to work well. More information on legal requirements for car boosters and seats can be found towards the end of the Lesson Pack. Extension activities A drama activity to help reinforce key messages about the dos and don ts of travelling in a car. 15 minutes None This will be best carried out in the hall. Start by asking children to imagine that they are going to go on a journey and to act out the things that the teacher says but without making a sound. Children can mime the following actions (with the teacher modelling): Pretend to climb into the car and sit in your car seat or booster. Make sure the seat belt is in place and clicks. Off we go, look out of the window but don t distract the driver. Keep hands away from the door and window We ve arrived but the car is parked on the side of the road. Show the children which side the pavement is. Undo the buckle and get out on the safer side away from traffic. Play in the park then do the return journey, repeating the actions that will help to keep them safer.

4 Reference: Seat belt and car seat legal requirements By law, you must wear a seat belt in cars and goods vehicles where one is fitted. Children up to 135cm in height must use a child seat/booster. The driver is liable to prosecution if a child under 14 years does not wear a seat belt or child restraint as required. Children under 12 and up to 135cms tall must use the correct child restraint for their weight (not age) when travelling in the front or back seat of any car, van or goods vehicle. Child restraint means any of baby seat, child seat, booster seat or booster cushion. A child can use an adult belt when they reach 135cm or their 12th birthday, whichever comes first. In buses and coaches with seat belts fitted, passengers aged 14 years and above must use them. The law for cars, vans and other goods vehicles is summarised in this table: Person Front seat Back seat Who is responsible Child up to three years old Correct child restraint must be used The correct child restraint must be used. If one is not available in a licensed taxi/ private hire vehicle, the child may travel unrestrained. Child from third birthday up to 135 cms in height (approx. 4 5 ) or 12th birthday, whichever is first Correct child restraint must be used Where seat belts are fitted, the correct child restraint must be used. The child must use an adult belt in the back seat if the correct child restraint is not available either: in a licensed taxi or private hire vehicle for a short distance in an unexpected necessity if two occupied child restraints prevent fitting of a third. A child three years and over may travel unrestrained in the back seat of a vehicle if seat belts are not fitted in the rear. The purposes of the Home-link Sheet are to: inform parents about the road safety activities that their children are carrying out and the accompanying learning objectives; give advice and ideas for parents about how they can reinforce key road safety messages through simple, enjoyable activities with their children; underline the message that the home plays a vital part in children s learning about road safety, not least through providing examples of good behaviour.
