Moodle IV Quizzes and Question Banks Online quizzes can be used to reiterate complex ideas in the reading, as a web quest to make certain that online students read your syllabus, as open book quizzes, to give student feedback, or simply as practice or study questions. Because Moodle grades the quizzes and deposits those grades in the gradebook, it becomes practical to offer more frequent quizzes or practice tests than in the traditional classroom. There are four steps to creating a quiz: I. Create a category for the quiz questions in the Question Bank. II. Create questions inside the question bank. III. Create a quiz activity. IV. Add questions from the question bank. Create Question Bank Categories Before you create a quiz, a question bank must be created for the questions to reside in. 1. Click Administration > Course administration > Question bank > Categories. 2. In the Parent category dropdown, select Top. 3. Type in a category name for your question bank. 4. Click on the Add category button at the bottom of the page. NOTE: You may repeat this process to create additional categories for each quiz in the semester. Any newly created category will appear with a (0) next to it. Once a category is populated with questions, it will show in parenthesis exactly how many questions are in that category. 2 Creating Quiz Questions In Moodle 1. Click Administration > Course administration > Question bank > Questions. 2. In the Select a category drop down menu, select the category you want the questions to be stored in. 3. Click the Create a new question button. POPULAR QUESTION TYPES: Multiple Choice These questions are the most common question types to create in Moodle. They are automatically graded and can be shuffled. True/False These questions are better made using Multiple Choice. NOTE: True or False questions are better created as a multiple choice question. Using multiple choice, you can add a third choice that says neither true nor false. Or if a question is disputed, you can regrade it to allow both choices to be correct. True/False type questions will not allow you to go back and mark both as correct. Short answer These questions are similar to a fill in the blank type question. Essay These questions give the students a box to type in or even upload a file as an attachment. These answers must be graded manually. 4. Select the question type (in this example, we will use Multiple choice ) and click the Add button. Fill out the Question name or title that will make sense to you when viewing it in a list. This question name will only be seen by teachers when browsing the question bank. 5. Type in your full question text to the student in the Question text box. Do not number the question. Page 2/14
6. Under Choice 1, type in the first possible choice. Do not letter it. If this is the correct answer, use the Grade drop down menu and select 100%, if the choice is incorrect leave the grade as None. Repeat this step for every choice in the multiple choice question. 7. Feedback for each answer is available, but it is not required. 8. Click on the Save Changes button at the bottom of the page. 9. To add more questions to this category, simply repeat this process. Page 3/14
Importing Multiple Choice Questions Into Moodle Creating questions one at a time in Moodle is quite slow. A faster way to create quiz questions is to type all the questions in a.txt file using the Notepad application on your Windows computer or TextEdit on the Mac. You can then import multiple choice questions all at once. To do this, the questions must be formatted in a specific way called the Aiken format. The Aiken format is only for multiple choice questions, and every detail, such as spacing, capitalization, etc. must be exact. Creating Aiken Format.txt Files 1. Open the Notepad program on your PC or TextEdit on your Mac. Microsoft Word is not recommended (see note below). 2. Matching the sample question example to the right, type your first question in your blank document. Each question must match this exact format to avoid errors while importing. a. Notice the question is not numbered. This is because it is likely the question will be shuffled in the Moodle quiz. b. Also notice the ANSWER (correct choice) is listed at the bottom of each question. In Aiken format, the ANSWER is listed so Moodle can automatically grade multiple choice questions after student attempts. 3. Save the quiz questions in Notepad (PC) or TextEdit (Mac) as a.txt file. You are now ready to import the.txt file into Moodle. NOTE: You may create True and False questions with multiple choice by having a question with only two choices (A and B). Also be sure to replace wording like All of the above with All of these choices since Moodle can shuffle the order of the choices. Page 4/14
Importing Aiken Format.txt File Into a Question Bank 1. Click Administration > Course administration > Question bank > Import. 2. Click the Expand All link in the upper right corner. 3. Click on the radio button next to Aiken format. 4. In the Import category drop down menu, select the category you want the questions to be stored in. 5. Drag the.txt file into the dotted area, or click Choose a file... to select your.txt file using the File picker. 6. Once the file appears in the Import area, click the Import button. Page 5/14
All of the questions in the.txt file should show up on a list of questions like you see below. 7. Click the Continue button. 8. The question bank category is now populated with imported multiple choice questions. NOTE: If you got an error during the import process, you ll need to first delete the questions that came through, then fix the error in the.txt file using Notepad (PC) or TextEdit (Mac), then try the import process again. You can call e LIS at (248) if you have problems with importing quiz questions. Page 6/14
Creating a Quiz Now that your questions are placed in the question bank, you are ready to create your quiz. Creating the Quiz Activity and Quiz Settings 1. With the editing turned on, click Add an activity or resource > Quiz, then click on the Add button. 2. Click the Expand All in the upper right corner to show all of the Quiz Settings. 3. General Name the quiz something specific, be sure to type the word quiz in the name so that students can easily identify it. You may include the due date in the name as well. Type an introduction for the quiz in the Description box, including any special instructions you might have. 4. Timing 5. Grade 6. Layout Click on the Enable checkboxes and specify the open and close date for the quiz. Students will only be able to take the quiz within the date and times specified. You can, for example give them a window of one week to access and attempt the quiz. Type in the Time limit in minutes if you want to assign one. Once a student clicks on the quiz, the timer will appear, and they will only have the time allotted to attempt the quiz. NOTE: Best practice with quizzes is to enable a time window to access the quiz, and set a time limit. Opening and closing a quiz for a limited duration of only a few hours restricts a student s access to a quiz and their potential ability to cheat. Grade category Select the Quizzes folder in your gradebook, if you created one, in the dropdown menu. Attempts allowed Change if you want to give students more than 1 attempt. Grading method Determines how the multiple attempts will be graded. Question order Select Shuffled Randomly if you would like your question order to be different for every student. New Page If your quiz has many questions, select how many questions you would like to appear per page. We recommend no more than 5 10 so students can still see the timer at the top left of the page. 7. Question behavior Setting Shuffle within questions to Yes will change the order of the choices (A D) for multiple choice questions for each student. This way, students answering the same question will have a different order of possible choices. Page 7/14
8. Review options It is common to uncheck The attempt for each except for After the quiz is closed. This keeps students from seeing answers while other students can still take the quiz. 9. Click Save and Display at the bottom of the page. Adding Questions to your Quiz 1. Click on the quiz. 2. Click the Edit quiz button, or the Edit quiz link in the Administration block. 3. Click the Add drop down menu to add a question from your question bank. You will have the option to make a new question, from question bank, or random question. To add individual questions from your question bank, click the Add drop down menu and select + from question bank. You can use the checkboxes to select multiple questions and click on the Add selected questions to the quiz button at the bottom of the list. Page 8/14
To add random questions from a question category, click the Add drop down menu to add a question from your question bank and select + add a random question. Use the popup window to choose how many random questions from the question bank category you want to add then click Add random question. For example, the category could have 50 questions, and the quiz may only be 20 questions that draw randomly from the larger question bank. In this case, you d set Number of random questions to 20. This is a great choice if your question bank has more questions in it than questions you have in the quiz. For final exams, for example, you can draw random questions from multiple question categories. 4. Once the questions are added to the quiz they will appear in the middle of the page. You can change the points in the grading boxes if you want them to be worth more than 1 point under by clicking the edit pencil icon next to the point value. Change the value and press Enter on your keyboard. This must be done one question at a time (see image below). 5. Once the questions you want to be in the quiz are in the middle of the page and have the points set, the quiz has been made. You can set the total score of the quiz at the top right corner next to Maximum Grade and click the Save button. If you want to change this later, go to Administration > Quiz administration > Edit Quiz. Page 9/14
Quiz Administration Block Edit settings Allows you to change dates, time limit, shuffling, and initial options you set up when you first created the quiz. Group & User overrides Allows you to give special time or extended access to the quiz (see instructions below). Edit quiz Allows you to add or remove questions and change points for the quiz or questions. Preview Allows you see the quiz an unlimited number of times. NOTE: After the Quiz has been created you can still edit the settings of the Quiz that you set in place at the time of its creation. For example, you can change dates, time limit, shuffling, etc. Be sure to have this set before any students attempt the quiz. DSS and Allotting Extra Time If you have a DSS student, or student who was sick, or has a circumstance that justifies an exception for more time on a quiz, you can override dates and times for the excluded student(s). 1. Click on the quiz. 2. Click Administration > Quiz administration > User overrides. 3. Click the Add user override button. 4. Select the student that you wish to give more time. 5. Enable the date range, and give the appropriate time limit for that particular student. 6. Click the Save button, or Save and enter another override if you need to do so. NOTE: If you have multiple DSS students, you can do this process much faster with groupings. You may create a grouping for quizzes that has DSS students in one group and all other students in another. The process is the same as above, only you will select Grouping override in step 2, and select the DSS grouping in step 3. For information on making groups and groupings, see the Moodle III handout. Page 10/14
Previewing the Quiz As a faculty, you are able to preview the quiz in a Teacher role or by switching to a Student role. If your quiz has been set to one attempt, you will encounter problems previewing it a second time unless you click on the Preview link under the quiz Administration block. 1. Click on the quiz. 2. Click Administration > Quiz administration > Preview. NOTE: You are able to Preview the quiz an unlimited amount of times when previewing using the link in the Administration block. However, if you preview the quiz using the Preview button on the quiz page (and not from the block) you will be restricted to previewing the quiz per the number of attempts set up in the quiz. View Quiz Results 1. Click on the quiz. 2. Click Administration > Quiz Administration > Results > Grades. 3. A list of the students and their attempts will appear on a table with times, dates, and grade. You can change what you see on this page by choosing from a number of viewing preferences at the top. Page 11/14
Viewing Quiz Statistics Moodle can show you quiz statistics based on all student attempts. These can be brought into Excel for further analysis. 1. Click on the quiz 2. Click Administration > Quiz Administration > Results > Statistics. 3. Information based on the quiz will be displayed and can even be downloaded. Example of Quiz Statistics Page 12/14
Manual Grading Essay questions will have to be viewed by the instructor and manually graded. 1. Click on the quiz. 2. Click Administration > Quiz Administration > Results > Manual grading. 3. Any questions that require manual grading will appear for you to view and grade. 4. Click the grade all link next to the question. 5. An essay submission will appear. You are allowed to type in Comments and enter a Mark (points earned). 6. Click the Save and go to next page button. Page 13/14
Resetting the Quiz Or Deleting Attempts Often students will need a quiz reset if their technology fails and there is only one attempt allowed. You will need to go in and delete that individual botched attempt, so only that particular student may try again. 1. Click on the quiz. 2. Click on the Attempts: # (# students) link. You ll get a list of the people who took the quiz. 3. Go to the student(s) name that you want to reset and check the box to the left of their name. 4. Select Delete selected attempts and it will delete their attempt and let them try it again. Note: Instead of deleting attempts, e LIS recommends you do add a user override when allowing a student to retake a quiz so the original attempt is preserved. Viewing Student Activity Logs You are able to see what students are viewing in your course, along with their visiting frequency. From the main course page, go to Administration > Course administration > Reports > Logs. You are able to see the log results based on any student, date, resource or activity. NOTE: This is especially helpful for disputes over quiz availability and errors. For example, if a student had problems accessing a quiz at a certain date and time, you can pull up that student, quiz, and date in the logs and see if their dispute is legitimate. Page 14/14
