Kearney s Global Retail Development Index, which measures the best developing economies for global retail expansion. In Brazil, 97% of the cities with 100 thousand inhabitants or less do not have a shopping center. In the Northeast, there are shopping centers to supply million people. Denmark, in contrast, has almost the same number of centers to supply million people. 2 The shopping culture In Brazil, the idea of shopping center goes beyond the concept of several shops concentrated at a single place. There is a cultural factor behind it. Besides the facility in finding goods, the shopping center is a safe place to escape the urban violence. Moreover, a great variety of entertainment options are connected to the same structure, such as movies, bars, restaurants, amusement parks, bowling, etc. Brazilians do not only like to shop, they like the shopping center itself. Safety and entertainment options attract Brazilians to shopping centers The beach of São Paulo: visitors on a weekend. (Campinas, São Paulo) There are a few popular sayings that illustrate the relevance of the shopping center on the national cultural context. One of them claims that shopping center is the beach of São Paulo - as a reference suggesting that the first option of leisure for who lives in São Paulo is the shopping center, because the city is not covered by the sea. These are indeed two undeniable Brazilian passions: beach and shopping center. The greatest advantage of a shopping center for me is the security. I also like the fact that it is opened 6 days in a year. Whenever you need, it is there. 3 Sector overview The entry of external stakeholders has been determinant for the increase in the efficiency and positioning of the sector. Despite the economic slowdown in global activities, result of a sequence of international market turbulences, Brazil has been experiencing a strong rise in consumption levels. This can be explained by the improvement of household purchasing power especially the Brazilian middle class, which accounts for % of the population the elevation of the general mass salary and the rise on the credit levels. Furthermore, there has been an indirect impact from governmental policies aiming to reduce social gaps and improve the conditions of lower classes, especially in areas with high development potential, such as the North and the Northeast. In addition to the economic effects, some processes and structural changes have contributed for the good activity of the retail sector in Brazil. In the last years, the Latin country has been working to adapt to the global transformations, renewing concepts and strategies and becoming more competitive and professionalized. In connection to that, the use of new technologies and the qualification of the professionals in the market have contributed to the country s new posture. It is noteworthy that the upcoming of external stakeholders and the adoption of modern operational concepts have boosted the sector in the search for more efficiency and a better positioning in the international arena. The international financial crisis hasn t had an impact on consumer habits in Brazil. At the moment, Brazil is number one on the ranking of top Developing Economies for global A.T. 4 Shopping center: the present and the future The shopping center industry is having its golden moment in Brazil. In 010, the sector had a turnover of R$ 87 billion, 17% more than the previous year.
