1 Mac (OS X) Tips and Tricks System Preferences System Preferences is the area you can go to change certain setup features of your Mac such as Display Options, Dock Settings, and Power Save options. To open System Preferences, click the Apple icon from the Menu bar and then choose System Preferences from the menu that opens. System Preferences window Display options Making Icons Bigger 1) Click the Display icon from the System Preferences screen. 2) In the Display section, adjust the resolution to the desired size. 1
2 Display settings 3) The smaller the resolution numbers, the bigger the icons and information on your screen will be. I.e. 800 x 600 will appear bigger than 1024 x ) Close the Display window with the red button in the upper left hand corner to accept your changes. Arranging icons Icons on the desktop can be arranged by Name, Date Modified, Date Created, Size, Kind, or Label. 1) Hold Control on the keyboard while clicking on an empty spot on the desktop. 2) Choose Show View Options from the menu that appears. 2

4 Desktop & Screen Saver Changing Desktop Picture 1) Click the Desktop & Screen Saver icon from the System Preferences screen. The Desktop & Screen Saver preferences screen can also be opened by holding Control while clicking an empty spot on the desktop and then clicking Change Desktop Background from the menu that opens. 2) Ensure that the Desktop section is open. 3) Click on the folders on the left hand side to see your options appear in the pane on the right. Desktop picture options 4) Click on a picture in the right hand pane to set it as your desktop picture. 5) You can check the Change picture box at the bottom of the window to cycle through the desktop picture choices at a selected time interval as well. 4
5 6) Close the Desktop & Screen Saver window with the red button in the upper left hand corner to save your changes. Changing Screen Saver 1) Click the Desktop & Screen Saver icon from the System Preferences screen. 2) Ensure the Screen Saver section is selected. 3) Click the Screen Saver choices on the left to see a preview in the right hand pane. Screen saver options 4) You could check the box to Use a random screen saver to cycle through the screen savers. 5) The Start screen saver slider is where you will set how long your computer needs to be idle before the screen saver will start. 6) Close the Desktop & Screen Saver window with the red button in the upper left hand corner to save your changes. 5
6 Power Save options Sleep options Sleep options allow you to set the time frame for when your computer goes to sleep. Putting your computer to sleep when it s not in use saves energy. The computer is still on, but is using much less power while sleeping. You can wake the computer up by pressing a key on the keyboard or clicking the mouse. It takes less time to wake up your computer than it does to turn it on. 1) Click the Energy Saver icon from the System Preferences screen. 2) Use the sliders to set how long the computer has to be inactive for before going to sleep (1 min to Never). 3) Also use the slider to indicate how long the computer has to be inactive before putting the display to sleep (1 min to Never). 4) Close the Energy Saver window with the red button in the upper left hand corner to save your changes. Scheduling shut down and start up You can schedule your Mac to shut down at a certain time and start up at a certain time. For instance, shut down at 5:30 PM every night and start at 7 AM every morning. 1) Click the Energy Saver icon from the System Preferences screen. 2) Click the Schedule button. 6
7 Schedule button on Energy Saver screen 3) Check the Start up or wake and Shut down boxes to activate them and allow you to set a time. Schedule start up and shut down window 4) Use the drop down menus to choose which days you would like to schedule for. Choose Weekends, Weekdays, Every Day, or a particular day of the week. 5) Enter the time(s) that you would like your computer to start up and/or shut down. 6) Click OK to save your changes. 7) Close the Energy Saver window with the red button in the upper left hand corner to save your changes. 7
8 Dock The Dock serves as a place to open programs, switch between programs, store shortcuts to programs, store shortcuts to documents, and to show you open applications and minimized windows. Dock bar Open any application from the Application Side by clicking on it. Open applications will show up on the dock with a little triangle under them. Click on any application with a triangle under it to reopen it. Documents that have been minimized will show up on the Other Side. Click on any minimized document to reopen it. Adding/Removing applications to/from dock 1) You can permanently add an application to the dock by dragging the icon onto the dock. 2) In Finder, click the Go menu. 3) From the Go menu, click Applications. 4) Browse to the application you wish to add to the dock and drag its icon to the Application Side. 5) A shortcut will be placed on the dock for you. 6) To remove an application from the dock, drag the icon for the application off the dock. 7) You will see a puff of smoke animation that indicates the icon has been removed from the dock. This will NOT remove the application from your computer. 8) You can also click and hold on an application icon to see a menu with a Remove from dock option. Remove from Dock menu 8
9 Adding/Removing folders to/from dock 1) You can permanently add a folder or document to the dock by dragging the icon onto the dock. 2) In Finder, click the Go menu. 3) From the Go menu, click Documents (or wherever you have the folder/document saved). 4) Browse to the folder/document you wish to add to the dock and drag its icon to the Other Side of the dock. 5) A shortcut will be placed on the dock for you. 6) To remove a folder/document from the dock, drag the icon for the folder/document off the dock. 7) You will see a puff of smoke animation that indicates the icon has been removed from the dock. This will NOT remove the folder/document from your computer. 8) You can also click and hold on a folder/document icon to see a menu with a Remove from dock option. 10 File structure/management It is best practice to save your documents into the Documents folder. Saving to the Documents folder keeps your files in one central location for easy access or backing up. You can create new folders in the Documents folder to keep your files organized. Creating new folders 1) Browse to the location you wish to create a new folder in. 2) Click the Folder options drop down menu or hold Control while clicking for the right click menu. 11 4) Give the New Folder that appears a name. 5) The Folder Options menu can be used to arrange icons in a folder (Show View Options) and to get information about folder or file size (Get Info). Moving files to folders or other locations 1) Locate the file you wish to move. 2) Highlight the file by clicking once on it. 3) Hold Control while clicking once and choose Copy item name or go to Edit>Copy item name from the Finder bar. 4) Locate the folder or location you wish to move the file to. 5) Hold Control while clicking in the location or on the folder and choose Paste item or go to Edit>Paste item on the Finder bar. 6) You can also drag and drop files from location to location which is the same as doing a Cut and Paste. Checking file/folder size 1) Highlight the file or folder you wish to know the size for by clicking on it once. 2) Press the Command key ( )+ I on the keyboard. You can also hold the Control key while clicking and choose Get Info from the menu that opens. 3) This will open the file/folder info screen. 11
12 File/folder info screen Rename files or folders 1) Highlight the file or folder you wish to rename by clicking on it once. 2) Press the Return or Enter key on the keyboard. 3) The file/folder name will be highlighted. You can now position your cursor in the box and make changes to the file/folder name that is there. File ready to be renamed 4) Type in the new file or folder name and click off of the icon to accept the change. 12
13 Searching for files/folders/applications The spotlight feature can be used to search for files, folders, or applications on a Mac. Using Spotlight 1) Click the Spotlight icon from the Menu bar. 2) Enter the name or partial name for the file or folder you wish to search for in the Spotlight bar that appears. Spotlight bar 3) The results will appear in a menu under the spotlight bar. Click the name of an application, file, or folder to open it. Spotlight results 13
14 Spotlight preferences Spotlight preferences can be set by clicking the Spotlight preferences option from the Spotlight results menu or by going to System Preferences and clicking the Spotlight icon. You will be able to specify which categories should be searched and what order the results should appear in. You will also be able to create shortcut keys for opening the spotlight menu or the spotlight window. Keyboard Shortcuts Ctrl + Click = Bring up right click menu Zoom in = and + Zoom out = and - Cycle between open applications = + tab Cycle between open tabs in your browser = Ctrl + tab Shift + Click = Select multiple non-contiguous files, folders, text entries Copy = + C Cut = + X Paste = + V Select All = + A Undo last action = + Z Open folder in new finder window = while clicking to open folder Go to the beginning of a document = + Home Go to the end of a document = + End Refresh your screen = F5 Take a picture of your entire screen = + Shift + 3 o The image will be saved to your desktop and a.png file Take a picture of a selection = + Shift + 4 o The cursor will become a crosshair o Drag the crosshair around the image you would like to capture o When the mouse button is released, the image will be saved to your desktop as a.png file Send a file to printer = Ctrl + Click and choose Print from the menu Open Force Quit Applications window = + Alt (option) + Esc 14
