Revised May 31, 2016 Wakefield Athletics (Mission) The Student Activities Office encourages a positive and enthusiastic environment where coaches can provide opportunities for student athletes to excel through the teaching of life-long lessons in leadership, teamwork, discipline, sportsmanship and competitiveness. Collaboratively, the activities office and coaching staff strive to promote our student athletes to develop and implement these life-long characteristics on and off the playing field. We value the Wakefield Way where we challenge our students in Rigor, Relationships, Resilience, Responsibility, and Results. It is our mission to ensure that our athletes excel academically in all areas of their curriculum. We also hope that our athletes will benefit from our school s diversity and form trusting, long-lasting relationships with teammates and coaches. 2 P A G E 2 W A K E F I E L D S T U D E N T S A C T I V I T I E S HOMECOMING, PEP RALLY, DANCES, & POWDER PUFF Homecoming is a special event which creates great school spirit and encourages all students to get involved. It occurs during the fall football season. It is a great time to reconnect with alumni as well. Pep rallies are scheduled three times a year to highlight athletic teams, increase school spirit, and engage class competition between students. Dances are another activity used to create social interaction between students. The Powder Puff football game has become popular with our students and is one of many events held around homecoming. Freshmen vs. sophomores, juniors vs. seniors, and then each winning team plays for the bragging rights of Powder Puff Champion. Coaches present special awards, varsity letters, certificates, and other recognition s at these award programs.

This newspaper is created for and by our students. #WHSreads is a year long project to broaden awareness that READING IS EVERYWHERE. The Journalism class has dedicated themselves to taking pictures of everyone at Wakefield, and what they are reading. Membership into clubs is opened to all students.

4 SPORTS PRACTICES: Students are expected to attend all practices held by coaches. Practices are held during the time frame of 3:15 pm to 7:30 pm. The last practice will end by 7:30 pm. A practice session will last a maximum of 2-3 hours. Coaches should provide practice schedules for parents and athletes. Practices can be held Monday Saturday. Sunday practices are never permitted. There are two late buses Monday Thursday; the first at 4:45 pm and the last sports bus leaves at 6:45 pm. Parents are expected to pick-up students no later than 30 minutes after the practice session has concluded. Water and breaks are made available to students during practices. Parents should encourage students to drink water at home to help them remain hydrated. Athletes should follow a good nutritional diet. It is recommended that each athlete purchase their own water bottle to have for practices and games. Sports photos are taken during each season. Parents may purchase team pictures. Payment is required at the time pictures are taken. Dates will be announced and photo packets sent home with each student. Athletic Trainer & Sports Injuries Becky Kigin Room E-030 Certified Athletic Trainer, or on Twitter. The Athletic Training Room (TR) is available to athletes for injury treatment and rehabilitation. The Athletic Training room is closed during the summer months and opens on the first day of fall sports practices. If an athlete sees a physician, either because the ATC requires it, or the parent decides they want their child evaluated by a doctor, they MUST bring Ms. Kigin a note in order for them to return to activity. Please encourage your athletes to eat breakfast and lunch, as well as drink water or clear fluids: they must learn how to adapt to their new in-sport schedules. Athletic Training Room is available for students when injured or during rehabilitation. Physicals are turned into Ms. Kigin for any student trying out for a sport. The athletic trainer will post office hours during each season. The athletic trainer is on duty at home games for high risk, high impact, and collision type sports. The Athletic Participation Agreement form is provided in each physical form packet. Parents and athletes are required to read and then sign the agreement. Concussion baseline tests will be given to athletes after they make a team. Ms. Kigin will arrange appointments with athletes for concussion test.

5 Booster Club Parent Involvement Boosters Needs Parent Volunteers Wakefield Boosters raises money for student activities by operating the concession stands and selling spirit wear. Last year, we distributed almost $18,000 to support teams, clubs and school activities. We can t open the stands unless we have parent volunteers! It s a lot of fun and a great way to get to know students and other parents. No experience necessary, and you can work in 2 hour shifts at any game for any sport - whether your kid is playing or not. Please sign up at the Booster Table or Beth Connors at beth.connors70@gmail.com Theatre, band, madrigals, & orchestra Students who have interests in music, singing, and acting have many opportunities to showcase their talent. Theatre on the stage during the winter and spring seasons with big theatrical productions i.e., Beauty & the Beast, Spamalot, West Side Story, Addams Family, and more. One Act Shows short theatrical shows performed within the school day, night, or competitively under the VHSL. Jazz Coffee House provides students and parents an opportunity to come together in a coffee house environment to listen to jazz musicians. Jazz Band performs live music at various times during the school year. Concerts the band, orchestra, and madrigals perform at school and community events. Madrigals students perform at many school and community events. Marching Band/Color Guard perform in competitions and athletic events.
