1 RHENISH NEWS For parents & daughters 6/11/2015 Rhenish Girls High School aims to provide its learners with an education of the highest quality and is committed to providing an environment that is conducive to effective teaching and learning. All learners, regardless of their intellectual abilities, social backgrounds and academic aspirations, are encouraged to develop their full potential, to strive for excellence in all they do, and to become responsible, caring and productive citizens. Important Notices: 1. There are still a few spots available for the Hockey and Netball tour to Malaysia in Interested hockey/netball girls are to see Ms Henery or Mrs Lombard for and information pack. 2. Exams scheduled for Friday 13 November will start at 8am and will finish by the latest at 10h30 (depending on the length of the exam). Staff development will take place on that day and this has necessitated the adjustment of times. Mentor Training The newly elected Mentors attended a day of training on Saturday 31 October at Klein Joostenberg. The mentors are very keen to assume their responsibilities and the training was aimed at helping them to define their role more clearly and to help the group develop their own identity through team building initiatives. They had sessions with Ms Joubert and Mrs Maree which helped define the role and responsibilities of the mentors and they figured their way through a number of activities aimed at giving them some insight into the kind of challenges they may come across in carrying out their responsibilities. It was not all work and no play, however, and the girls had plenty of opportunity for laughter and they got to realise the strengths of the individual members of this team. Please make the necessary transport arrangements. Buses will operate according to their normal exam schedules. The girls need to be aware that there will be no study time before the start of the exam.

3 Grade 12 Art Exhibition The Grade 12 art learners recently had their prize giving at the PJ Olivier Art Centre. The occasion also marked the opening of the exhibition of their work. A number of Rhenishers also received special awards. Santa Shoebox Success The Santa Shoebox organisers were delighted to collect the 850 gift boxes lovingly prepared by the Rhenish community. The girls had great fun getting them to the delivery vehicles they formed a human chain and passed the boxes through this to the vehicles waiting in the parking area. Thank you so much to all who contributed so generously to this great cause. Your generosity will bring joy to many children at Christmas.

5 Radikale Redenaars Alessia Ledere, Grade 10, participated in the national round of the Radikale Redenaars public speaking competition on the 31 October in Pretoria. As it was a national competition, there were representatives from each province. The competition caters for all kinds of speaking talents in different categories in each age group. Alessia participated in the English Home Language persuasive speech category. She presented a speech entitled, Teenagers are our country s most valuable resource. Alessia s speech was clearly convincing she placed second. It was an amazing experience and it was interesting to see the different styles of speaking and the variety of topics discussed from each age group. This alone proved the point in my speech of how valuable and outspoken teenagers really are, said Alessia. Ground Staff Christmas Boxes It has come to that time of year when we would like to give something back to our "unsung heroes", our cleaning and ground staff. These behind-the-scenes staff make sure your daughter s school environment is safe and clean. Every year we collect non-perishable "treat" food for Christmas boxes for our ground-staff. Items like coke, chips, sweets, jelly, custard, coffee, biscuits, tinned fruit and condensed milk. We know that it's an expensive time of year and that many of you contributed generously to the Santa's shoebox project, but we would like to ask you to send a food item to school with your daughter to make our(more than 20) ground-staff's Christmas holidays a little more festive. Thirty two schools took part; some of them from as far away as Namibia.
