2 Nurse s Note New Year s Resolutions SWEET POTATO BISCUITS INGREDIENTS: - 2 cups of all-purpose flour - 2 teaspoons of baking powder - 1 teaspoon of salt - 2 Tablespoons of brown sugar - ½ cup of melted butter - ¾ cup of sweet potatoes (cooked and mashed) - ½ teaspoon of baking soda - ¾ cup of buttermilk PROCEDURE: 1. Be proactive by washing your hands to practice proper hygiene in the kitchen. 2. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. 3. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. 4. In another bowl, combine the brown sugar, melted butter, and sweet potatoes, and beat until fluffy. 5. In a small bowl, stir ½ teaspoon of baking soda into ¾ cup of buttermilk. 6. Slowly combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients until just most, being careful not to over-mix the batter. 7. Turn out the sweet potato biscuit dough onto a floured surface, kneading slightly. 8. Roll the dough and cut them into biscuit shapes. 9. Place the biscuits on an ungreased baking sheet and bake for about 20 minutes. Happy New Year! We hope you welcomed the New Year in safe and sound. Did you make any New Year's resolutions? It seems this is the time of year that everyone vows to join a gym, eat more healthily, and to in general, improve their lives. Not that these are bad choices, but sometimes, they are such massive life changes, following through with them can be short lived. Instead, consider making your goals for the New Year measurable, reasonable, and attainable. If exercise is new for you, make your goal to walk your neighborhood for 30 minutes 3 times a week or to do a yoga DVD. Exercise is addictive and after 3 weeks, it will become habit. Make your expectations of yourself reasonable and you will celebrate the results, fueling the pursuit of increased activity. If you are looking to change the way you eat, consider making healthy lunches and dinners mid week but give yourself a day on the weekend to 'get out of jail free'. Deprivation is never a good motivator. Setting goals that can be achieved will encourage a continuation and increase of new, positive behaviors. We can be hard on ourselves. Life is tough enough without putting added pressure on ourselves with insurmountable goals. Baby steps in goal setting can set you up for success. Here's to a happy and healthy 2015! 2

Curriculum Corner Value of the Month Self-Discipline By Katie Wright, Curriculum Specialist some of the rules. (Creation + Ownership= Self-Discipline!) Self-discipline is about practicing control over your actions, which goes hand-in-hand with being PROACTIVE (Habit 1). We are proactive when we practice self-discipline, because we are choosing to take charge of our choices. We can instill discipline our lives by setting goals for ourselves; a new year is a perfect time to set new goals! Sharing books with your children that illustrate self-discipline like: The Giving Tree The Patchwork Quilt Summer of the Monkeys Sarah, Plain and Tall How can I enforce self-discipline at home? Help your student s with their goals, whether academic or personal. Create a rewards weekly system for when they meet goals Make sure your students have structure with an agreed upon set of rules, or House Code of Conduct. Let your children have input on A Look Into the Future In January, your students will need to remember their self-discipline as they return from their winter break. The themes for January will be I Have a Dream, Lego Challenge, Healthy Minds, Bodies and Habits, and Money Matters: Dollars and Cents. 3
