1 North East PCP Diabetes Prevalence Data Demographic and Health Data January 2015 The Region The North East PCP region is located in the north and north east of the Metropolitan Melbourne area. The region includes the following suburbs or towns: Alphington, Northcote, Thornbury, Reservoir, Ivanhoe, Preston, Eaglemont, Heidelberg, Heidelberg west, Rosanna, Viewbank, Yallambie, Lower Plenty, Watsonia, Watsonia North, Bundoora, Montmorency, Greensborough, St Helena, Eltham, Eltham North, Plenty, Diamond Creek, Yarrambat, Research, North Warrandyte, Kangaroo Ground, Christmas Hills, Hurstbridge, Wattle Glen, St Andrews, Doreen, Kinglake, Kinglake west, Strathewen, and Arthurs Creek. The total estimated resident population in June 2013* for the region was 333,996 with most of this concentrated in the Darebin and Banyule local government areas. Population density is greatest in Darebin and significantly lower in Nillumbik. Between 2006 and 2013, Darebin has had the greatest increase in population growth in the region. *Preliminary estimate from ABS Estimated total population, population density and growth by LGA ( ) LGA Population per km population average annual growth rate Banyule 117, ,475 1, % Darebin 132, ,797 2, % Nillumbik 61,515 62, % ABS April Regional Population Growth, Australia Population Key Characteristics A population s age structure and socioeconomic profile are significant contributors to prevalence of chronic disease, such as diabetes. 3 Prevalence of Diabetes Data from Diabetes Australia indicates that the proportion of population with diabetes* has increased significantly in each of the NEPCP LGAs between 2001 and In 2001, 2006 and 2011 Darebin had the highest prevalence of diabetes in the region's population. Between 2001 and 2011, the greatest increase in proportion of population with diabetes occured in Banyule, which had a 207% increase. Compared to the Victorian average figure (4.5%) all NEPCP LGAs had lower prevalence of diabetes in their populations. *includes diabetes type 1, type 2, gestational diabetes, and other forms of diabetes Prevalence of all diabetes types in population ( ) table Change no. % no. % no. % no. 4 The Victorian Population Health Survey (201112) results indicate that, compared to the Victorian average, Darebin LGA has a higher proportion of population aged 18 years and over that reported they had been diagnosed by a doctor with type 2 diabetes. Within the NEPCP catchment, Reservoir West PHA had the highest rate of diabetes per 100 population, followed by Preston and Heidelberg East PHAs. 4

6 High Blood Sugar Type 2 diabetes accounts for around 85 per cent of all cases of diabetes mellitus. It is caused by insufficient production of insulin and/or the body becoming resistant to high glucose levels in the blood. (VPHS ) In the North and West Metropolitan Region (NWMR) recorded a greater rate of high blood sugar levels among the population compared to Melbourne and Victoria. The higher rate is almost entirely attributable to a significantly higher than average rate among NWMR males. Statewide data from VPHS also indicates that, among males, the incidence of high blood sugar levels doubles (from 4% to 8%) in the 5564 year age bracket and remains high thereafter. Rates among females are relatively stable from age 35 years with a modest spike (from 4.6% to 5.6%) in the 4554 years bracket. Prevalence of type 2 diabetes increases dramatically among both males and females over age 55 years. 7 Prevalence of Risk Factors The results of the Victorian Population Health Survey indicate that, at the state level, there are certain socioeconomic and healthrelated risk factors associated with rates of type 2 diabetes that are significantly higher than the state average. Males with the following characteristics were significantly more likely to have type 2 diabetes: Not in the labour force Income < $40,000 per annum High or very high psychological distress Sedentary activity level Current smoker Fair / poor selfreported health, and Obese. Females with the following characteristics were significantly more likely to have type 2 diabetes: High or very high psychological distress Sedentary activity level Alcohol abstainer Fair / poor selfreported health, and Obese. Low Income In 2011, Darebin had the highest proportion of male population aged 15 years and over who had an annual income less than $40,000 within the NEPCP catchment; and this was higher than the Greater Melbourne and Victoria averages. Within the NEPCP catchment Nillumbik had the lowest proportion of male population 15 years and over who had an annual income less than $40,000. Compared to Victoria all LGAs in the NEPCP catchment had a lower proportion of female population aged 15 years and over who had an annual income less than $40,000. 12 Appendix 1. Geographic definitions and boundaries Data in this report, due to different practices across source agencies, is presented in various geographic levels: Local Government Area, Statistical Local Area and Population Health Area. Local Government Areas NEPCP consists of three Local Government Areas: Banyule, Darebin and Nillumbik. Nillumbik Darebin Banyule Statistical Local Areas Statistical Local Areas (SLAs) are subsections of LGAs. Developed by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, SLAs are being phased out and replaced with other types of geographic boundaries. Note: (S) denotes Shire and (C) denotes City and these terms refer to the name of the Local Government Area such as Nillumbik Shire or City of Darebin. 12
13 Population Health Areas Population Health Areas (PHAs) have been constructed by the Public Health Information Development Unit (PHIDU) to replace Statistical Local Area level analysis of the Australian Health Survey PHAs do not always fit exactly within LGA boundaries.
