1 X Section: Community Animal Welfare Level 2 - Session 1 Introduction to Animal Welfare Give the Cadets the various information leaflets, and allow them 15 minutes to look through them. They should write down what they consider to be key facts that may be useful during the quiz later; they will not be able to use the information sheets as these will be taken away beforehand. This activity can also be used as a teamwork session in seeing how they best use their time to get the maximum information recorded for later use. Ensure time for discussion and feedback. Ask the Cadets to start collecting news clippings (or be aware of news items on radio, TV or even video) about animal welfare issues in preparation for Session 5.
2 Section: Community Animal Welfare Level 2 - Session 2 Getting to know an animal The Cadets should decide which domestic animal they are going to focus on, and use any of the leaflets available from previous sessions as resources. They should have a clear action plan of what information they need to collect over the course of the week, and - ideally - know where they will find that information. They should prepare a presentation or poster about the needs of the animal and include the following: Feeding requirements as a young animal Feeding requirements as an adult animal Exercise needs Inoculations Routine care such as grooming, flea treatments, worming

Ask the Cadets to give their presentations or talk about their posters. Open up a discussion about the cost of keeping pets and the responsibility of the owners.

They should be given the photographs and, in discussion, decide what action they should take in each situation. They should feed back their answers to the whole group and discuss any variations in decisions between groups. (The information as to the recommended action is provided.)

17 Section: Community Animal Welfare Level 2 - Session 5 Raising public awareness Raising public awareness of animal issues is a key function of animal charities, and the RSPCA have run many campaigns. Give out the information about four issues: microchips; oiled birds; neutering or other issues that may be topical at the time. Other, more contentious animal care issues such as hunting, live exports, circuses or current topical issues may be included at this level. Activity 1 Interview Working in pairs or small groups the Cadets should choose a topic, and prepare a TV interview or radio script around the issues raised. They should highlight the main issues from the information provided and present their interviews to the rest of the group.
18 Section: Community Animal Welfare Level 1,2,3 - Session 6 Animal talk Invite a guest speaker from an animal welfare charity, someone who works with animals or depends on animals for their daily living. A visit may be arranged to an animal welfare establishment, farm or stables to see how other animals needs are met. The important point to remember is to get the Cadets to think about things from the animals perspective. If a speaker or visit is not possible, this session should be used to present the work from the previous session and recap on issues raised. If the Subject has been run at three levels at the same time, Cadets should be encouraged to present their work to the other groups so broadening their understanding.
