TUESDAY: rubbish collection is normal on Monday and then delayed one day the rest of the week. WEDNESDAY: rubbish collection is normal on Monday and Tuesday then delayed one day the rest of the week. THURSDAY: rubbish collection is normal on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday then delayed until Friday. Friday Special Pick-Ups are always cancelled during the week of a holiday. FRIDAY: rubbish collection is normal the entire week, however the Friday Special Pick-Up is cancelled.

Pepper Pike residents have worked hard to make our community a leader in recycling, and these efforts have allowed the City to win numerous County recycling awards. In this day and age, when communities are attempting to *tighten the belt* on spending, it is more important than ever to recycle. In 2010, the Service Department, along with ten other surrounding communities, created a recycling consortium for the purpose of finding a local recycling processor that would take our recycling without charge. Up until then, the City was paying upwards of $35 per ton to process bluebag recycling * about the same as a ton of trash at a landfill. To our delight, we found a company that was willing to pay us for our recycling. In 2011, the City was compensated over $17,000 for bluebag recycling; this is an average of over $42 per ton! This effort helped reduce the cost of Pepper Pike s rubbish collection program by over $2 per home per month. While the financial benefits of recycling are significant, let us not forget the impact that recycling has on our environment. Diverting materials from the waste stream conserves landfill space, which is rapidly depleting in the United States. There are communities right here in Ohio that have already begun shipping their waste as far as Pennsylvania, because of the lack of landfill space in Ohio. Recycling also reduces the use of natural resources and saves energy. For example, plastic containers made from recycled plastic emit up to 8 times less carbon, and steel cans made from recycled steel result in a 50% energy savings. Recycling one ton of paper conserves 17 trees. There are so many benefits to recycling, not only financially for our community, but also for our planet and future generations. If you already actively recycle, we applaud and thank you for your efforts. If you have not yet started a recycling program in your home, now is a great time to start one. It is now easier than ever to recycle. Think of what you can do to help save dollars and keep our premier services here in Pepper Pike. 4 Collection Guidelines For weekly rubbish collection, place rubbish in plastic disposable bags and inside galvanized or plastic, 30-gallon or smaller containers. Waste containers should be equipped with two (2) lifting handles, and should not weigh more than 40 lbs. Containers that exceed 40 lbs. will not be collected and residents will be responsible for lightening the load. For missed rubbish collection: Contact the Service Department before 2:30pm on your normal collection day and you crew will return as soon as they can. If you contact the Service Department after 2:30pm on your normal collection day, or any other day of the week, your crew will collect your rubbish with a Friday Special Pick-Up. To avoid missing rubbish collection, we kindly ask that residents have the rubbish ready for pick up by 7am, and keep the driveway clear of vehicles and anything else that may block the scooters from entering. No loose rubbish: Waste containers should not exceed 40lbs. The Service Department will not collect any rubbish that is loose in a container or that weighs over 40lbs. The Bureau of Workers Compensation identified that lifting full rubbish containers above shoulder level is a hazard. Each Service Department worker picks up over 250 homes per day. It is safer to individually lift rubbish bags out of rubbish containers in order to place them in the back of the vehicle. Bags prevent materials from flying back at the workers, possibly causing injury. Additionally, bags prevent rubbish from scattering throughout a neighborhood, causing unsightly litter in the streets. Rubbish must be outside of garage: Since we are dramatically increasing the number of homes collected by one crew each day we must be as efficient and steadily paced as possible; every second counts. Additionally, it is a liability for the City of Pepper Pike to have employees going into a garage for rubbish. Please have your rubbish outside of your garage by 7am on your scheduled pick-up day. Please keep in mind, that both rubbish and recycling may be dropped off at the Service Department between 7:00a.m. and 2:30p.m. Monday through Friday. If you need assistance please stop in the office and someone will gladly help you! 1

5 Friday Special Pick-Ups This service is provided free of charge to all residents of Pepper Pike. Residents are allowed six (6) Special Pick-Ups per calendar year. To arrange for a Friday Special Pick-Up, contact the Service Department Thursday by 3:00pm at (216) We will need your address and a description of the items you wish to have collected. You may also leave your Special Pick-Up request on our voic Thursday by 3:00pm and you will be put on the schedule. Items must be ready for collection by 7:00a.m. on Friday, and will be collected by 2:30p.m. Please be aware, Friday Special Pick-Ups are not to be used for an extra rubbish day. Our definition of regular rubbish is weekly accumulation from household rubbish containers. The program was originally designed to assist residents with disposing of large, bulky items, and yard waste. Over the years, it has become a second collection day for some residents, and we want to re-establish this program to its original purpose. Under the old system, we would have stopped out to a house for one bag of rubbish, or traveled across town for a toaster, which is neither fuelefficient nor time-efficient. Friday Special Pick-Up items include: Appliances: washers, dryers, microwaves, stoves, dishwashers etc. NOTE: Appliances containing Freon: refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers, window air conditioners etc. must have the chemical removed and tagged in order to be collected. Bagged or Boxed: Clothing, Toys and Miscellaneous Household Items: Bags and boxes should not weigh more than 40 lbs. each, and should be securely closed to avoid spillage. Cardboard Boxes: Collapse, stack and tie empty boxes. Stacks must weight less than 40 lbs. Carpet and Carpet Padding: Rolled and tied. Rolls must weight less than 40 lbs. and measure 4 feet or less in length. Crates and Wooded Pallets: Collapsed when possible and stacked. Loose pieces of wood from crates should be tied in bundles weighing less than 40 lbs. and no longer than 4 feet. Furniture: Couches, sofas, kitchen/dining room tables and chairs, mattresses, box springs, bed frames, dressers and other types of wooden and laminated furniture. Latex Paint: Must be dried, with lids off the cans and boxed not weighing more than 40 lbs. To dry paint, add an absorbent material such as cat litter, saw dust or oil dry. Miscellaneous Large Items: Small amounts of doors and wood boards (must be cut into 4 foot lengths), windows, sinks tubs etc. Yard Waste: Leaves, twigs (no more than 2" in diameter), and weeds must be in Kraft paper recycling bags weighing less than 40 lbs. each. Branches must be bundled with string or twine and cut to 4 feet in length. NOTE: Kraft yard bags are available for purchase at the Service Department, local hardware or home improvement stores. 2

6 Friday Special Pick-Ups-Restricted Items RESTRICTED ITEMS: - Grass clippings, logs and tree stumps, earth, rocks, broken concrete/cement, bricks and railroad ties. - Please do not dispose of items such as branches, grass clippings or any other debris near small streams, creek beds or drainage culverts. Doing this can cause problems and is very harmful to our environment. - Any construction debris left over from do-it-yourself home repair projects, such as drywall, tiles, linoleum, insulation, roofing materials, large amount of doors, window or wood, etc. - Any construction debris left over by contractors. Contractors are responsible for disposing of their own debris. - Household Hazardous Waste (HHW), such as oil based paint, turpentine, wood stain, gasoline, pesticides, oil, mercury etc. The City holds round ups for such items the last Friday of every month. Please call the Service Department Thursday by 3pm to schedule a Special Pick-Up. Or you can drop items off on the last Friday of the month. These items may be disposed of through our Container Drop off Program. Contact the Service Department for details. See next page. Composting Compost consists of organic materials derived from plants and some animal material that has been decomposed largely through aerobicde composition (with oxygen). The process of composting is simple and is practiced by individuals in their homes. Compost is rich in nutrients. It is used in gardens, landscaping, horticulture, and agriculture. The compost itself is beneficial for the land in many ways, including as a soil conditioner, a fertilizer to add vital humus or humic acids, and as a natural pesticide for soil. The Solid Waste District offers Compost Seminars & a Bin Sale program. After you attend a 60-minute seminar about backyard composting, you will have the opportunity to purchase a bin for your home. 7 Container Drop off Program This program allows residents to easily dispose of large amounts of brush and yard waste, construction debris, household debris and other items without the hassle of bagging or bundling the items before hand. The program is run on a first come first serve basis, and residents must reserve their container at least one day in advance. Residents may rent a 6 or 12 cubic yard container to be left on their property overnight or over the weekend. Residents are responsible for loading the container and having it ready to go by the time we come to collect it. Containers are dropped off between 7am and noon, and collected the next business day between 7am and noon. Restrictions: In order to comply with landfill dumping requirements, residents may not mix any of the different loads together in the same container. Also, the city prohibits contractors from renting or utilizing a City owned container. Finally, items cannot be loaded beyond the top edge of the container. Different types of loads: Household Items: appliances (all Freon must be removed), furniture, clothing, toys, etc. Construction Debris: drywall, tiles, linoleum, insulation, aluminum siding, windows, doors, roofing materials, etc. Construction debris from do-it-yourself projects only. Yard Waste: grass clippings, leaves, weeds, hedge trimmings, plants, mulch, straw, earth, sticks, twigs, and tree branches 9* and under diameter. Small Trees: branches, trunks and stumps diameter. Large Trees: branches, trunks and stumps 12 and over diameter. Railroad Ties Stones: rocks, bricks, cement, concrete, etc. (6-cubic yard container only.) PRICES: Payment and paper work must be turned in before the container can be dropped. 8 Household Hazardous Waste Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) is any product that is toxic, flammable, corrosive, reactive, or explosive. The HHW round up is the only means of disposing of these items. The City holds a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) round up the last Friday of every month. Items must be placed in boxes with the box lids OPEN, weighing less than 40 lbs. each. Please call the Service Department to schedule a Friday Special Pick-Up. You can also drop the items off at the Service Department on the last Friday of the month. Some examples of HHW are oil based paint, turpentine, wood stain, gasoline, pesticides, oil, mercury, thermostats, thermometers, furniture polish, household cleaners, chemicals etc. Computers - Cell phones Drop off old computers (CPU's, monitors, keyboards etc.) and cell phones at the Service Department or call us to schedule a Friday Special Pick-Up. Computers collected will be either refurbished or scrapped and the parts will be recycled. Complete sets of cell phones (phone, battery and charger) will be packed and donated to the Cuyahoga County Witness Protection and the Domestic Violence Project. Cell phones brought in without the battery and/or charger will be scrapped and the parts will be recycled. 5

9 Ink Jet Cartridges The City of Pepper Pike has teamed up with the Orange High School PTA to help the environment by collecting empty printer ink cartridges. Unfortunately, 87% of all computer printer inkjet and laser cartridges end up in landfills. You can simply drop them off at the Service Department. You are not only recycling and freeing up landfill space, but also contributing funds to the Orange High School PTA. Orange High School PTA can earn anywhere from $1.00-$14.00 in cash for each cartridge that is recycled. Other drop off locations are Brady Middle School and Orange High School. Also, make sure you check out our website or to see what cartridges are eligible! Scrap Tires The Service Department has one scrap tire round up per year. Contact us to see what month. Tires must be off the rims. During the summer months, tires are a potential breading ground for mosquitoes. Please be sure to store any unwanted tires indoors until collection. 6

10 Fun Recycling Facts - An aluminum can that is thrown away will still be a can 500 years from now! - To produce each week's Sunday newspapers, 500,000 trees must be cut down. - Glass can be recycled virtually forever. It never wears out. - Americans use 2,500,000 plastic bottles every hour! Most of them are thrown away! - Recycling plastic saves twice as much energy as burning it in an incinerator. - The energy saved from recycling one glass bottle can run a 100-watt light bulb for 4 hours or a compact fluorescent bulb for 20 hours. - Rainforests are being cut down at the rate of 100 acres per minute! - Oil can be recycled, re-refined and used again, reducing our reliance on imported oil. Sharps According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Sharps are lancets, hypodermic needles and syringes, scalpel blades and glass articles that have been broken. The Service Department will collect Sharps with normal weekly rubbish. These items MUST be placed in a Sharps container, with the *SHARPS* written in big block letters on all sides of the container so that visible to the sanitation crew. A Sharps Container is a rigid, leak proof, puncture-resistant container with a tight fitting lid. Common household containers that match this description are: detergent bottles, bleach bottles, 2-liter pop SHARPS bottles, plastic juice containers and coffee cans (if lid is securely taped to the can). 7 SHARPS

11 Paper, Glass, Plastic & Can Recycling Pepper Pike has a co-mingled recycling program, which means that paper, glass, plastic, and metals may all be mixed together in the same blue or clear plastic recycle bag for weekly collection. Collection guidelines for recycling: - Co-mingled recycling (paper, glass, plastic, and metals) must be placed inside 13-gallon or 30-gallon blue or clear plastic recycle bags and the bags. Recycle bags may be purchased at Heinen s or Kredo Hardware. Small grocery store plastic bags are not acceptable. - Recycling bags MUST be tied and weigh 40 pounds or less. Acceptable items for recycling include: GLASS:*Food and beverage containers of any color, rinsed and without lids. Broken glass should be placed in a puncture resistant container or cardboard box and labeled as *BROKEN GLASS.* METAL: Aluminum, steel, and tin are acceptable. Rinse out all food and beverage containers with water and crush if possible. PAPER: Newspaper/Magazines/Mail, Corrugated Cardboard, Phone Books, Cereal Boxes, Beverage Cartons, Tissue/Shoe Boxes, Food/Detergent Cartons (no food stains), Paper Egg Cartons, Toy Boxes, Paper Gift Wrap etc. NOTE: Cardboard and paper must be stacked and tied or bagged. Also, paper that is placed inside the rubbish containers is considered contaminated and therefore will not be recycle. PLASTIC: Plastics 1-7 are acceptable. Rinse out all food and beverage containers with water. Collapse or crush items whenever possible to permit a greater volume in each bag. NOT ACCEPTABLE FOR RECYCLING: the following items should be place in the rubbish. Empty paint cans, empty anti-freeze and motor oil containers, wax cartons, wire hangers, plastic bags, Styrofoam, toys, plastic utensils, and plastic straws. **Donate aluminum cans to the Aluminum Can for Burned Children Program (ACBC) by rinsing them out with water, crushing them and then placing them in blue or clear plastic recycle bags. Bring the bags to the drop-off bin next to the Service Department. Proceeds to towards educating children on fire prevention and firefighter training. 8
