1 September 4, 2016 Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time When we decide to follow Jesus, we need to be sure that we are ready to make the necessary sacrifices. Jesus said it was like figuring out the cost before building a tower. Add up what is needed to build the tower below. Circle the number in the money sack if it is enough. Cross it out if it is not.

3 ALL YOU WHO LABOR On Monday we celebrate Labor Day. This holiday was first celebrated in New York City 124 years ago on the same date, September 5, The next year it was also celebrated on September 5. In 1884 the first Monday in September was chosen as a permanent date. There are some big differences between the workers of 1882 and the workers of today. Some of the most popular occupations in the 1880s were servant, blacksmith, cotton mill worker, saddle maker, and miner. There were no airplane pilots, astronauts, computer programmers, or X-ray technicians. There were no television or movie stars because there were no TVs or movies. But one thing about workers in every age is the same all honest work that people do is important and has great value. Even a hundred years ago, we knew it was a good thing to give people a day of rest in order to thank them for their hard work. What kinds of jobs do you imagine people will be doing a hundred years from today? In the Gospel of Matthew Jesus says, Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest (11:28). Jesus blesses the good work people do. On Labor Day, say a prayer for all people who work. Pray that the work they do will help others and help them become the people God calls them to be. Remember to pray also for people who are looking for work, that they might find a job they are able to do, one that will benefit all people. In these frames, draw some pictures of the kinds of work people might do in the year 2116.

4 Long ago people who spread the good news about Jesus and his teachings were called disciples. We can be disciples for Jesus today, too! 5 September 11, 2016 Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time A son who had spent all his money foolishly returned home. But instead of being angry, his father was filled with compassion. He gave his son a warm welcome and celebrated with a feast. Use the word bank to complete the lesson we can learn from this story. You can read it in your Bible at Luke 15:11 32.

7 BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS Today is the fifteenth anniversary of 9-11, a time when we remember and pray for all those who lost their lives on that day. We also pray for the family members who have been living without their loved ones for such a long time. September 11, 2001 was a tragic day of violence. Unfortunately, there is still a lot of violence in our world. Think about these words from Matthew s Gospel (5:9) and what they mean. Pray that all people might have the courage to become peacemakers beloved children of God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God. The people who create violence are armed with weapons that injure or kill others and those weapons can include hateful and hurtful words. What are the things peacemakers need to use to bring about cooperation, respect, and love between people? Use the letters in the word peacemakers to write some qualities needed for making peace in our world. Which ones do you have? Which ones do you need? Some examples are done for you. 11 THE NEW TESTAMENT September 21 is the feast of St. Matthew. The name Matthew is given to the writer of the first Gospel in the Bible. The Bible is not just a single book. It is a book of books divided into two parts: the Old Testament or Hebrew scriptures, and the New Testament or Christian scriptures. The New Testament contains 27 books with several different authors and kinds of writing. Do you recognize any of them from this list? Books Authors 4 Gospels... Sts. Some of them are done for you. Fill in the ones that are missing. Use your family Bible to find these books and compare their lengths. Which book is the longest? Which book is the shortest? 15 CATECHIST S JUBILEE School and Religious Education programs have begun. This Sunday we focus on catechists and teachers as part of the Jubilee Year of Mercy. What is your teacher s or catechist s name? You can pray for him or her on this weekend, when a special Catechists Jubilee is being celebrated in Rome. Some people who teach others about the mercy of Jesus will spend the weekend learning more about God s mercy so they can share what they know. On Friday, September 23, they used art to help them think about Jesus and mercy. They looked at the paintings of great artists such as Caravaggio and Michelangelo. Both of these artists painted many pictures about stories in the Bible that tell us about God s forgiveness. You can look at their paintings on the Internet. Can you think of some of those stories of mercy from the Bible? On Saturday, September 24, teachers and catechists learned about what mercy means and prayed for the gift of mercy in their own lives. On Sunday, September 25, the pope will celebrate Mass for them in St. Peter s Square. Even though you are not a teacher or catechist you can do some of the same activities. Can you find a picture that shows mercy or a story about mercy? Talk with someone about what you find. The story might even be something you saw happen in school. Begin this activity by looking up the definition of mercy in your dictionary. Then add words to the circle that describe someone who is merciful. When you are at Mass this week end, pray for your teacher or catechist and all people who teach us about Jesus and his loving mercy.

16 Jesus told a story about a poor man with sores all over his body. He often would lie at the door of a rich man s estate, but the rich man never helped ease his suffering.
