This is not playtime at the park where anything goes. It is an organized, structured environment. That allows it to be FUN. 3

4 Use plastic clipboards at practice- someone from each lane is in charge. Teach them to organize their lanes. 10 and unders have no idea where to go. They ll go with friends or have the order be by social domination (tough boys or bossy girls). You need to direct that. Organize lanes with a purpose- speed, m/f, leadership, age, buddies, stroke, error needs, etc. Equipment. Practice planned and adjust from there. Change is OK if it s coming off of some foundation or plan. Ultimately, LEARNING is the key, not an adherence to your plan. Have 2 coaches per group if you are able. Quote and goal of the week- they/i read it off and go over goals. Have a goal for the week. This year, I m addressing the areas of head position, k, catch, body movement, breath as weekly concepts. Center the teaching around that. 4

5 Start on time feet first for safety. 1st 4 weeks- total team. 1 stroke per week- bk, fr, br, fly Then fly/bk, br/fr, fr/im, fly/bk, br-fr, im/fr I break practice into minutes vs. yardage- 30 minutes aerobic, 20 minutes K, 15 drill, 10 speed ( DO SOMETHING FAST EVERYDAY), 10 skill leaves 5-10 minutes of time between sets. We have 3days at 90 minutes and 3 days at 1:45. Typically go k-d-s-sk-speed. Pushoffs- Dip N Slip on every wall Wall expecations- dip n slip, streamline, breath control (be realistic based on long term plan and stick to it). Leave 5 seconds apart. 5

6 Read the clock and teach them. Use math sheets if possible. Use math teachers. Digital vs. analog. Always finish to the wall. If a teammate is in the way, run in to them. Boys dig it. Girls less likely but do it. Breathing pattern on fr and fly. Finish on bk for bk. 2 hand touch on br and fly. Hold o2 on fr and fly. Be ok to stop and give firm reminders about the expectations. Perfection, no, competency, yes. Be an observer. Quickly realized going back to more in depth is there is a big difference between racing/meet technique and everything else. We shouldn t be surprised but we typically are. Bigger difference between what they can do technically in practice over duration and meets. Be careful of too much feedback- let them work on something for awhile. Is that better- they ve only done it for a 25 or a 50. Difference between giving attention and giving appropriate feedback. Observe and watch how the do based on the goals of the set and not just the last few strokes. Easy to critique other areas at this level so stay on task. 6

7 Kicking- all kinds so challenge. ASCA 101 ways to kick. Board, no board, vertial, Ninja, etc. Teach them to K properly. I don t think we spend nearly enough time teaching them to kick properly yet we all see how it is becoming more and more important. Same as other aspects of stroke so teach them to K. Don t be satisfied. Teach what you want to happen. Allow for some open ended challenges. Give 2 different sendoff and see who goes where. Souther and how it led to Kicking Beast Award. 7

8 Younger may need longer time. Expect them to keep up. John Leonard talk from ASCA. Keep it brief. Have a sense of urgency during practice. Get them invested in accomplishing the workout- WE need to stay on task today. Go over sets in smaller groups when possible- use second coach. Loud environment, hold their attention. Use assistants more than just give out workout. Assign a group, assign to work on errors, take over for the day, write the workout. One, you can grade their workout, secondly at this age, their not going to jeopardize the season. Water bottle. Teach them to divide it up into X minutes of practice. Be careful of younger swimmers drinking gatorade. Too much sugar for amount of calories burned. Habit should be with water. Bathroom- either right after or preferably after you ve given the next set. Again, they re on YOUR TIME. When talking to the group I want shorter people up front so I can see everyone s face. When I whistle, eyes and ears. Everyone needs their signal because their going to talk. Learn to whistle. Have a sense of humor. Tell a joke. Make fun of yourself. Be silly. Show you re human. Do something regular that they ll get in to. 8

9 Dice game, relays, sprint set, tough aerobic set. Each practice/end of tough set ends in a high five-acknowledge your teammate. Get out like an athlete. Pick up all equipment and everything in our team area whether we brought it or not. 400 swimmers daily in our facility- just competitive. Leadership moment for someone to be in charge of that. Inner Circle- before a meet. 9

15 Different activities- sports, martial arts, philosophy/religion, other teachers, etc. Not in the back of your mind. If it s that important, keep it up front of your thinking. 15

16 What is your exercise routine. We are an athletic culture- do you live it and are good examples to your athletes. Can you beat them at something athletically? Sometimes we need to say NO or not right now. You can t be available to everyone for everything. Read- military. Say Dress professionally 16
