2 Why is this issue so key?

3 1. Youth Employment Globally half of youth are not sure that their postsecondary education has improved their chances of finding a job In the UK it is 60% Globally 40% of employers say a lack of skills is the main reason for entry-level vacancies In the UK it is 30% Source: Education to Employment: Designing a system that works - Mckinsey & Co Survey 2012

5 Why is this happening? A disconnect between all three Each are not engaged with the other enough 1/3 rd employers never communicate with education providers Of those less than ½ say it is effective <50% youth understand which degree disciplines lead to job opportunities and good wage levels

The Impact of Employer Engagement with Students Young people who had experienced four or more employer engagement activities were 6 times less likely to be NEETS than those who had no experience of employer engagement (Mann 2011). The same study showed that each employer engagement activity was correlated with a four per cent increase in wages (c. 750). So the more students engage with employers the more employable students become

Some Graduate Recruitment Trends It s more competitive than ever to get a graduate job With 2,500,000 studying in HE 400,000 fresh graduates every year 250,000 graduates getting a 2.1 or better Skills are key to differentiation & gaining employment 1/3 rd Recruiters do not fill all roles A key reason is lack of skills in graduates

11 For Schools School leavers faced with more complex choices post compulsory education Up to date relevant information and guidance on what employers offer is not easy to access Increasing calls for impartial and pupil directed guidance in Education Act 2011 need to do more than simply highlight a company website Ofsted inspection to be more vigilant in checking that schools are providing impartial advice

12 Education Act 2011 Statutory Guidance Schools to secure independent and impartial careers guidance from the age of 14. Schools cannot fulfil this duty by asking a teacher or other person employed by the school to provide guidance

A committee of students run the Society They create, project manage and run career and skills events for the wider student population A Teacher Mentor Group find time for the Society events in the academic calendar Bright Futures provide: A strong Employer Network to add to the schools own High levels of Infrastructure & Support (frees up staff time) Expertise and Knowledge of the Employment Market Committee support ( and phone) Termly E-magazine Conferences

17 How is the Society different to traditional career models Empowers the students to take responsibility for their future (Not done to them ) Harnesses the students energy and creativity to increase wider student engagement peer to peer networks Year round infrastructure & support, plus an employer network, all provided by Bright Futures It is mouldable to each and every school Part of a wider UK network in Schools & HE Proven success in HE
