3 Welcome This Guide will provide you with details of the uniform items that your child(ren) will need at Dubai English Speaking School and / or Dubai English Speaking College. At DESSC, uniform is a very important part of school life we believe that it gives our young people a sense of belonging to the DESSC community, a focus for the school day ahead and an overall a sense of pride. As a school, the quality of uniform is something that matters to us. We also want to know that you are getting a good standard of service in short, that you can get what uniform you want, when you want it and when you need it; we believe that being in control of our own two shops, working with partners we rate highly, will enable us to do this. For our part, we see this as an important development in our ongoing efforts to provide our parents and their children with the best of everything. Such is the value we place on school uniform, we have partnered with Trutex to launch our very own uniform shops; one for each school. Both shops opened at the start of 2015/16 and are located at our Academic City campus with convenient hours to suit parents, ample free parking, easy access and an online pre-ordering service to help parents with purchasing. Trutex have trained staff to assist with any sizing questions you may have. Full details of uniform rules can be found in the DESS or DESC Parents Handbook. Current Parents: The cut-off point for purchasing uniform only from our onsite shops is the beginning of Term 2, January 2016 There are some changes to the current uniform but these are mainly subtle and cosmetic. However, please be assured that purchasing uniform from Stitches and Magrudys is acceptable until January 2016, however, with limited stock we had to have a cut-off date. Parents will not be asked to replace current uniform that is in good condition provided it meets school regulations. 2 P age

4 Key Changes for You to Note Are: DESS The colour of the knitwear will be changed to poppy red The knitwear will replace the sweat cardigan/sweatshirt Skirt style and material will change the colour remains grey Trousers and shorts will be of improved quality fabric boys in Y6 can opt to continue wearing shorts PE Kit colours will be the same (i.e. House colours) but the white and the red/yellow/green/blue are reversed All trousers and skirts will include the school logo embroidered on the top left of the garment DESC Blouse/Shirt with House colour trim a minor style and fabric change (coloured sleeve changed to piping) Sixth Form shirt/blouse - change of fabric Skirt Grey (Y7-11) and Black (6 th Form) - fabric and style change Trousers will be of improved quality All trousers and skirts will include the school logo embroidered on the top left of the garment Swimwear The design will change at both schools: Jammers and shorts available for the boys House colour and personalised swim caps introduced Discounted Speedo goggles and other accessories available The towel for swimming will change to microfiber fabric lighter, quick drying and much more appropriate for our climate Any questions regarding the contents of this Guide or queries about the uniform service are to be directed via to our dedicated uniform support (click to open ) but we have tried to answer some of the more common questions on the next page. 3 P age

5 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS To assist you with some of the questions you may be considering. Q. Are the red shoes staying for DESS FS and Y1 Children? A. No. We surveyed parents in FS and Year 1 and they indicated overwhelmingly that they would prefer (on the grounds of availability, price and / or appearance) to dispense with the red shoes. As with other changes to the uniform, black shoes will be compulsory for all girls at DESS from January Q. Stitches and Magrudys (previous suppliers) are they selling off stock at reduced prices? A. Yes they are but stocks are limited and you should check supply before you make the visit. Naturally enough they want to sell as many items as possible. Q. Is it worth buying stock from Stitches and Magrudys when most of it will be obsolete by January 2016? A. The answer to this will range from family to family and child to child and some of you may well need to top up as your child(ren) grow and/or wear items out. For others, you may need little or nothing in between now and January Q. When will the DESSC shops open and stock be available to purchase? A. The new dedicated shops opened from 29 August at Academic City. Trutex has introduced a Trutex@DESS fortnightly Thursday shop in the Primary school: it is subject always to the operational needs of the school so we advise checking the termly schedule on your Communicator before making plans. Orders can be placed for payment and pickup at DESS using the correct order form and sending to Trutex at 48hrs in advance. Q. Can I pre-order the uniform from the Shops for later collection? A. Yes you can. There is an order form at the end of this guide which you should . Same procedure applies for Trutex@DESS shop (see above). 4 P age

6 Q. Will there be enough uniform items for all sizes? A. Yes. However, if you consider that your child(ren) is/are different sizes for their age range and if you re unsure of Trutex sizes please contact Trutex, Trish Lawlor, for more personal attention to sizing. Q. Are prices remaining as they are? A. They will be very much in line with previous prices. Q. Did you consult with parents over this change? A. Yes we did at both DESS and DESC. Some of their feedback has directly resulted in the uniform and service improvements being put in place for all areas for all. 5 P age

7 SCHOOL UNIFORM SHOPS DESS and DESC each have their own dedicated shop situated in Academic City (near Silicon Oasis) click here for Map Opening Hours are Saturday to Thursday (closed Fridays) Saturday to Wednesday from 7.30AM to 3.30PM Thursday from 7.30AM to 2PM is a fortnightly uniform shop at DESS, allowing parents the convenience of collecting their orders without having to travel to Academic City please check Communicator or DESS Reception for termly schedule. All items must be clearly labelled with your child s name. Your child requires the shorts and shirt in the correct House colour, trainers and white sport socks. (You will be notified of which House your child will be in before he/she starts school). Trainers should be easy-to-wear with Velcro fastenings and non-marking soles. 8 P age

10 Swimming Bag This bag and its contents should be clearly marked and be large enough to hold: 1. towel 2. swimming costume 3. rubber shoes/flip flops 4. swimming hat in the appropriate House colour Swimming is part of the curriculum and, therefore, if children are absent for longer than one session a doctor s note is required. 16 DESC Please note that the uniform should ONLY be purchased from the DESC uniform shop in order to ensure uniformity of style and fabric. Substitutes are not acceptable. We expect all our students to come to College neatly groomed and smartly dressed, in the correct and appropriate clothing. This sets a professional work ethic. Students need to be aware that our expectations are the same when they are wearing the DESC uniform outside of College. Parents are asked to support their child in meeting these expectations. Year 7 to Year 11 Students only Sixth Form Students only White short sleeved shirt with College logo. Sleeve and pocket piping in HOUSE COLOUR (see chart below). Sixth Form students must wear a white short sleeved 15 P age

17 shirt with College logo and black collar. Grey skirt or grey tailored trousers (Year 7 - Year 11) / Black skirt or black tailored trousers (Sixth Form) must be worn with the College logo. Skinny, bootleg or drainpipe trousers and those without the College logo are not permissible. Skirt lengths - the shortest is to touch the ground when kneeling and mid-calf to be the longest. Black Jumper (optional item) with College logo. Sixth Form jumpers will have the College logo and Sixth Form identification. Shoes should be sensible, black, polished leather and worn with black socks. Girls should not wear heels more than 4cms (see Footwear section for further information). Socks must be black. Girls are not permitted to wear tights. Headwear DESC baseball caps available from Trutex. 18 Shoes: Non-marking training shoes DESC Canterbury Teamwear Students who are selected to represent one of the DESC Sports teams will be required to purchase the Canterbury team kit from our PE Department. We advise parents to wait until trials have been completed and squads have been selected in term one before purchasing any DESC Canterbury Teamwear. All enquiries regarding Teamwear should be made to the PE Department. Bags Students may, if they wish, purchase College bags for PE kit from Trutex. However, provided that they fit the purpose of carrying kit and equipment, students are allowed to choose their own bags. Footwear We expect all students to wear smart, business-like shoes. Boots are not to be worn, i.e. no footwear should be above the ankle. Shoes must be leather and completely black with no coloured stripes, swishes or logos. Shoes must be firm and supportive and students must keep their shoes polished. Black versions of trainers or tennis shoes are not permissible. Fabric and canvas shoes must not be worn. 19 Examples of acceptable leather shoes for girls General Appearance Jewellery No jewellery should be worn. However, girls are allowed to wear one small, plain pair of gold or silver studs worn in the conventional position in the ear lobe. Multiple earrings, nose studs and piercings in other parts of the body are not permitted. Friendship bands, ankle chains, etc. must not be worn. If any of the above items are worn to College, they must be removed immediately and at the request of any member of staff. Students who decide to have new piercings during term time, either in an unconventional part of the ear or other part of the body, will be asked to remove the earring. Plasters covering earrings are not permissible. Items of religious significance may be worn with the prior written permission of the Head of House only, following written parental request. Hair All students should have conventional haircuts, no shorter than a grade 2 Hair should be neat and tidy Fringes should not obscure the eyes Tram lines or other shaved patterns are not permissible 18 P age

20 Boys' hair should not be longer than the top of the shirt collar For Health and Safety reasons, the excessive use of wax or gel is not allowed and hair should not hang over the face. A member of staff may ask girls to tie their hair back if they feel it is in the way. However, girls must tie their hair back for all practical lessons. Hair should not be braided. Any artificial change in hair colour should have a natural appearance. Students coming to College with extreme colours such as purple, red or bleached hair will be sent home and required to restore their hair to an acceptable colour before being allowed to return to College. Hair ornaments should be plain and functional, kept to a minimum, in black and in keeping with uniform. Decorative or elaborate hair ornaments are not permissible. Body Adornment Nail varnish (including on toenails), transfers and tattoos are not permitted. Facial make up, such as lipstick and eye-liner, is not permitted and will be removed by the student on the instruction of staff members. Light foundation is permitted as long as it is natural in appearance. Sixth Form Girls may have clear polish or French manicure only. Coloured polish or nail art is not allowed. 19 P age
