2 POLICY 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 The wearing of school uniform at The Fulham Boys School is integral to its ethos of ins9lling pride, discipline and high standards. 2. PRINCIPLES 2.1 Our school uniform and appearance policy is based on the principles that school uniform: Promotes a sense of pride in the school Engenders a sense of community and belonging towards the school Supports posi9ve behaviour and discipline Is prac9cal and smart Iden9fies the boys with the school Prevents boys from coming to school in fashion or designer label clothes that could be distrac9ng in class or create a sense of compe99on Makes the boys feel equal to their peers in terms of appearance and helps nurture cohesion between different groups of boys Is regarded as suitable wear for school and good value for money by most parents Is designed with health and safety in mind. 3. EXPECTATIONS 3.1 School Uniform is compulsory for all boys and must be worn correctly (see Appendix 1) on the way to and from school as well as on the school site. 3.2 Whenever the school uniform is worn, it must be complete and not mixed with non- uniform clothing. PROCEDURE 4. NON- COMPLIANCE 4.1 We expect all boys to comply with this uniform policy, which will be monitored daily. 4.2 Any boy not wearing the correct uniform will be challenged, and if unable to produce a valid note explaining the situa9on should be reported to his Head of House. 2
3 4.3 Persistent offenders may not be allowed to a[end normal lessons and will work separately in the Pupil Support Class. 4.4 They are also likely to have certain school privileges removed. 4.5 They may be detained at break 9me, lunch9me and a]er school. 4.6 Boys who persistently break the uniform policy or who defy instruc9ons from senior staff, even if they do not otherwise display poor behaviour, may be excluded from school. The Department for Educa9on (DfE) does not consider exclusion to be an appropriate response to breaches of school uniform policy, except where they are persistent and defiant. 4.7 The Headmaster or a person authorised by the Headmaster may ask a boy to go home briefly to remedy a breach of the school's rules on appearance or uniform. This should be for no longer than is necessary to remedy the breach. This is not exclusion, but an authorised absence. However, if the boy con9nues to breach uniform rules in such a way as to be sent home to avoid school, or takes longer than is strictly necessary to effect the change, the pupil's absence may be counted as unauthorised absence. When making this decision, the child's age, vulnerability, how easily and quickly the breach can be remedied, and the availability of the parent, will be considered. 4.8 Where a boy is not adhering to the school uniform and appearance policy, staff will be considerate and discreetly try to establish why not. We understand there may be good reasons why a pupil is not a[ending school in the correct uniform. 4.9 If a boy is not wearing the correct uniform because their parents are in financial difficul9es, the school will be sensi9ve to the needs of the boy. The school will give parents 9me to purchase the required items and/or consider whether a school or local authority clothing grant can be supplied. 4.10Boys should have a doctor s note if they need to wear alterna9ve footwear for school, due to a medical condi9on or serious injury. 4.11The policy will meet the needs of individual students because of temporary or permanent medical condi9ons. For example, pupils with some skin condi9ons may be unable to wear specific fabrics, and students with foot or leg injuries may be unable to wear school shoes. An official medical cer9ficate will be required for any student requiring long- term dispensa9on due to medical condi9ons. 4.12If there are serious reasons, e.g. on religious grounds, why parents want their child to wear clothes that differ from the school uniform, the school will look sympathe9cally at such requests. 3
4 5. GOVERNORS 5.1 The Governing Body supports the Head teacher in implemen9ng the school uniform policy. It considers all representa9ons from parents regarding the uniform policy and liaises with the Head teacher to ensure that the policy is implemented fairly and with sensi9vity. 5.2 It is the Governors responsibility to ensure that the school uniform meets all regula9ons concerning equal opportuni9es. 6. PARENTS 6.1 We believe that parents have a duty to send their children to school correctly dressed and ready for their daily schoolwork. One of the responsibili9es of parents is to ensure that their child has the correct uniform that it is clean and in good repair. 6.2 If any parent would like the school to modify the uniform policy they should make representa9on in the first instance to the Headmaster. 7. STAFF 7.1 All staff have a responsibility for ensuring that pupils wear correct uniform. Form tutors must check uniform daily. 8. SUPPLIERS 8.1 The Fulham Boys School uniform has been sourced for quality, prac9cality, performance and value, along with the need to make it smart, classic and understated, relevant to the age groups from year 7-11, with longevity in mind. 8.2 Our school uniform suppliers is currently Sogan's, 6 Greyhound Rd, London W6 8NX. 8.3 Serious Stuff, Rosslyn Park FC, Priory Lane, London, SW15 5JH support@serious- stuff.com. Shop: h[p:// stuff.com/ 8.4 We will go out to tender every three years to ensure the uniform is a compe99ve price. 4
5 APPENDIX 1 SCHOOL UNFORM AND APPEARANCE Uniform list Grey school Blazer with school logo* Long- sleeved white shirt Dark Charcoal trousers* Grey long- sleeved pullover* School 9e* Grey or black socks Black leather lace- up shoes (no trainer, slip- on, boot or patent leather styles) School rucksack* Beanie* for Autumn and Winter terms (op9onal but if boys choose to wear a beanie it must be an FBS one) Plain Black coat (no logo) - op9onal All items marked with an asterisk (*) to be purchased from the appointed school uniform supplier. Appearance The uniform should be worn correctly at all 9mes. Blazers may be taken off in classroom at the teachers and/or Head Teachers discre9on. Blazers and/or pullovers may be taken off at certain 9mes at the Head Teachers discre9on e.g. hot weather, summer term. Shirts should be tucked in, with the knot of the 9e pulled up to the shirt collar, with the 9e tail covering the shirt bu[ons. An outer jacket is permi[ed to be worn to and from school, it should be black or dark grey, with no emblems or logos visible, and should not be longer than thigh- length. Exterior blazer pockets should not be used for storing anything larger or heavier than a handkerchief or oyster card, and should not be used for res9ng hands inside. Hair hair styles should be 9dy and of a conven9onal nature, no extreme or cult haircuts including sculp9ng, shaving or braiding are allowed. The maximum hair length is above the collar and the minimum hair length is a number 2 cut. Hair must be one natural colour. Parents are strongly advised to seek advice on the acceptability of hairstyles that may be considered different before allowing their son to adopt such a style. School reserves the right to insist on re- styling if it considers the style inappropriate. No jewellery other than a wrist watch may be worn. 5

Rugby/football boots (please ensure that boots have studs compliant with playing rugby In cold condi9ons boys are allowed to wear tracksuit bo[oms. This is not a compulsory item of kit but if boys choose to wear tracksuit bo[oms they must be FBS branded. Alterna9vely, boys may wear a plain black base layer. The school strongly recommends the wearing of a custom- fit mouth guard for sports such as rugby and hockey. 6
REGULATIONS. All HCS items are available from the Uniform Shop. Cash, cheque or EFTPOS are required at time of purchase.
UNIFORM POLICY REGULATIONS The wearing of HCS uniform is compulsory. Parents are expected to ensure that their children attend HCS in the correct uniform at all times. Failure to wear a required uniform
