INTRODUCTION Each year the University recgnises the achievements f Vcatinal Educatin and Training (VET) students with tw (2) prestigius medals that are awarded t nly t the mst utstanding VET students at the University. The University Medal fr Apprentice r Trainee f the Year and the Chancellr s Medal fr Vcatinal Student f the Year. INTENT T prvide a transparent, fair and equitable prcess fr awarding the University Medal and the Chancellr s Medal in VET and t clearly define the selectin criteria and applicatin prcedures used t determine the successful recipient. RELEVANT DEFINITIONS In the cntext f this dcument: Apprentice r trainee means a persn wh enters int a training cntract with an emplyer and a Registered Training Organisatin (RTO) and the emplyer prvides cmpetency based vcatinal educatin and training in cnjunctin with the RTO and the apprentice r trainee learns the ccupatin r trade; Apprenticeship r Traineeship means an Australian Apprenticeship that cmbines practical, paid emplyment with frmal, structured training t achieve a Natinally Recgnised Qualificatin underpinned by a training plan and cntract that is linked t an industrial award r agreement and registered with Australian Apprenticeships NT; Candidate means a persn applying t the University fr the University Medal r Chancellr s Medal awards; Chancellr s Medal means the prestigius medal awarded t the VET student wh is the vcatinal student f the year and wh has demnstrated the strngest achievement in his r her study, career, cmmunicatin, team and/r leadership skills; Curse means a prgram f study frmally apprved/accredited and which leads t a an academic award f the University; Spnsr means an emplyer r a third persn, ther than the student, wh is respnsible fr paying the student s fees t the University; University and Chancellr s Medals VET Student Award Prcedures pr-102 Versin: 3.00 Cntact Officer: General Manager, VET Business Imprvement Page 1 f 5 Any gverning dcument nce printed is cnsidered an uncntrlled dcument. 2 VET student means a student f the University wh undertakes a Vcatinal Educatin and Training curse and may r may nt be an apprentice r trainee; Trainer means VET lecturer; University Medal means the prestigius medal awarded t the VET student wh is the apprentice r trainee f the year and wh has demnstrated the strngest achievement in his r her study, career, cmmunicatin, team and/r leadership skills; VET means Vcatinal Educatin and Training. PROCEDURES Eligibility Criteria T be eligible fr the University Medal Apprentice r Trainee f the Year, the apprentice r trainee must have: Cmpleted r be due t cmplete a cntract f training (apprenticeship r traineeship) between 1 April (f the previus year) and 31 March f the current year; and A cntract f training registered with the relevant training authrity; and Undertaken a minimum f 80% f the training with the University. T be eligible, fr the Chancellr s Medal Vcatinal Student f the Year, the vcatinal student must: Be a full r part-time VET student but nt an apprentice r trainee; and Have cmpleted r be due t cmplete an accredited vcatinal training curse with the University between 1 April (f the previus year) and 31 March f the current year; and Undertaken a minimum f 80 per cent f the vcatinal training with the University. Selectin Criteria Candidates will be selected against the fllwing award criteria: Criterin 1 Criterin 2 Criterin 3 Criterin 4 Career and study achievements Cmmunicatin, team and leadership skills Other pursuits Ability t represent the training system at a brader level The Awards Selectin Panel will be lking fr evidence f hw the candidate s training has cntributed t career and study plans, t the develpment f skills and achievements t date, and any way in which the VET student s training with the University may have helped t achieve ther pursuits. Awards Selectin Panel The Awards Selectin Panel shall cmprise f: Pr Vice-Chancellr, VET (Chair); General Manager, VET Business Imprvement; Pr Vice-Chancellr, Indigenus Leadership (r nminee); University and Chancellr s Medals VET Student Award Prcedures pr-102 Versin: 3.00 Cntact Officer: General Manager, VET Business Imprvement Page 2 f 5 Any gverning dcument nce printed is cnsidered an uncntrlled dcument. 3 Pr Vice-Chancellr, Law, Educatin, Business and Arts (r nminee); An industry representative chsen by the Pr Vice-Chancellr, VET; and Other members c-pted by the Chair, as necessary. Nminatins VET trainers, emplyers, spnsrs and/r students themselves are encuraged t nminate VET students wh have displayed utstanding perfrmance during his r her studies. Where a nminatin is nt made by the individual student, the nminee must cmplete a - frm indicating that the student accepts the nminatin and include a shrt verview in writing (minimum 2 pages), addressing: Career and Study Achievements, such as: Any persnal r career gains achieved as a result f participating in studies at the University and the candidate s wrk; and Hw the candidate has integrated n-the-jb and ff-the-jb training and what benefits this has had. Cmmunicatin, Team and Leadership Skills develped thrugh n-the-jb and ff-the-jb training, such as: Effective ral and written cmmunicatin; Levels f self-reliance and resilience in challenging times; Levels f self-reliance and resilience in challenging times; Effective team participatin; Leadership and prmtin f training, industry r ther relevant pursuits. Other Relevant Pursuits, such as: Achievements in areas ther than study and wrk; Cmmunity invlvement; Awareness f current scial, ecnmic and plitical issues affecting their industry. Applicatin Submissin Applicatins must be presented in 12 pint typeface and include a minimum f tw (2) x A4 pages plus up t five (5) pages in attachments. Cmpleted applicatins addressing award criteria shuld be frwarded t the General Manger, VET Business Imprvement alng with the names and cntact details f tw (2) referees wh may be cntacted by the Awards Selectin Panel. Shrt-list Suitable candidates will be shrt-listed by the Awards Selectin Panel. The Chair f the Awards Selectin Panel will infrm thse candidates shrt-listed, in writing. 4 Where multiple candidates are fund t be equally suitable recipients, the Awards Selectin Panel may cnduct interviews with the candidates and/r cntact the candidates referees t determine the final recipient/s. If the Awards Selectin Panel cannt distinguish between tw (2) r mre candidates then tw (2) r mre medals shall be awarded, hwever, it will be nted that the award was shared. Shrt-listed candidates wh are nt chsen t receive an award will be ntified in writing by the Chair, Awards Selectin Panel. Medal Recipients Once the successful candidates have been chsen by the Awards Selectin Panel, the Chair will write t advise the successful recipients f his r her successful applicatin fr receipt f a University Medal r Chancellr s Medal. The Chair will als infrm the Office f Student Administratin and Equity Services, Graduatins branch f the names f the successful recipients. Recipients will be invited t attend the University Graduatin Ceremny in May f the same year, t be presented with his r her medal.
