Age-inappropriate Games (e.g. GTA, COD, 8+) PEGI Rating System based on content not skill level required!! Negative Aspects: immune to violence, imitate violence and show more aggressive behaviour; poor social skills; time away from family time, school-work, and other hobbies; lower grades and reading levels; exercising less, poor nutrition, less sleep; aggressive thoughts and behaviours (American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, 05) Net Children Go Mobile Study (O Neill & Dinh, 05) Just under ½ of Irish children access the internet from their bedroom (6%) Smartphones are the most used device for internet access Safefoods (05) campaign to reduce childhood obesity Encouraging parents to make bedrooms screen-free zones National Sleep Foundation (05) Negatively impacts sleep time, sleep quality and daytime alertness. Children using electronic media as a sleep aid to relax at night have been shown to have later weekday bedtimes, experience fewer hours of sleep per week and report more daytime sleepiness Online & Unprotected Prime Time Investigates (Nov 0)
3 Thousands of Irish students pictures ending up on pornographic sites Children's esafety Commissioner, Australia (Sep 05) Innocent photos of children originally posted on social media account for up to half the material found on some paedophile image-sharing sites. Mostly the images are posted by parents, who are unaware of how easily they can be downloaded and stored by friends or strangers. Fraping Sharing passwords/usernames Not logging off properly Outing (e.g. Snapchat & screenshots) Sub-tweeting (e.g. group messages on Viber) Anonymous Apps (e.g. Yik Yak, Whisper etc.) Popularity contest Unknown friends/followers Net Children Go Mobile Study (05) in 5 children (%) have had contact online with people they have never met face to face. Fake accounts to bully or access the child s information (e.g. McFlurry, McNuggett, celebrity account, shop, road) Body image & self-esteem (Dove Beauty Evolution Project) Eating disorders/excessive exercising/ self harm can be encouraged on Social Networking Sites/Blogging Sites such as Tumblr (e.g. Thinspiration, Thinspo, proana sites) Also use of drugs/alcohol (e.g. neknominations) Sexting or Sex texting refers to sending nude or semi-nude photos or videos to others via mobile phones/apps (i.e. Snapchat) Irish experience (0 years +) most common amongst rd year students ( in, Griffin, 0) Main reasons Pressure, flirt, attention, to be popular, revenge. Consequences: Pictures/videos can be distributed to others (online/through phones e.g. revenge porn sites) Increased risk of victimization/bullying Mental health issues/anxiety/depression/suicide
4 Irish Law Child Trafficking and Pornography Act To find answers/ Curiosity/ Pressure by friends Risk-taking Youth Online Seek adventure, feel in control. Open to non-disclosure blackmail - own behaviour used against them E.g. Omegle, ChatRandom, ChatRoulette, Tinder Can warp expectations Recommendations: National School Focus on avoiding risk Parental awareness & involvement is central Age-appropriate sites/apps parents should have password for all App downloads Appropriate filtering/blocking software (Net Nanny/K9 etc.) No technology in the bedroom Rules/Limits establish good practice But everyone else has it Recommendations: Secondary School Focus on managing risk Providing skills to deal with online situations (e.g. scenarios) Practical advice on Privacy setting/terms of Use of Apps/Sites, blocking contacts etc. Online pressures Irish youth face need to be incorporated into discussions on dealing with pressures in real life, such as drugs, drink etc. The issue of sexting discussed in conjunction with relationships. Within School -awareness, education and AUP Case examples work well (e.g. Amanda Todd Story) Holistic approach community, school & home Creating a balance between online & offline activities giving technology a place within our lives (e.g. Tech free Tuesdays/Tech free Thursdays ) Tweet: "What's this guy looking at? The world? MGMS Training (under news tab and links tab) Laya Healthcare video s, booklets and infographics for parents & students Common sense media resources for parents, students and teachers.
