3 1 INTRODUCTION This document covers the operation of the Valeport Modus IPS Intelligent Pressure Sensor, when used with DataLog 400 PC software. Hardware The Modus IPS measures Pressure and optionally, Temperature parameters. This unit has a choice of digital communication methods built in to offer flexibility for configuration and use with a wide number of cable types and lengths. A pigtail wired for standard RS232 communications is supplied. The instrument housing is made from acetal, and has a 1000m rating. Note that the range of the pressure sensor may be less than the instrument rating see calibration sheet for details. 1.1 SENSORS The sensors fitted are as follows: PRESSURE (Standard) PRESSURE (Option) TEMPERATURE (Option) Resonant Quartz transducer, ±0.01% accuracy. Available ranges are 65psi (approx 35m water), 100psi (approx 60m water), 200psi (approx 125m water) and 500psi (approx 330m water). A lower accuracy (±0.04%) strain gauge sensor may be fitted instead. Available ranges are 100dBar (approx 90m water), 200dBar (approx 190m water) and 1000dBar (approx 990m water). A fast response PRT temperature sensor may also be fitted. 1.2 POWER The unit requires an external power supply in the range of 9 to 30vDC. At 12 volts, the current drain for a unit with resonant quartz pressure sensor is approximately 45mA whilst communicating and 50mA when sampling. 1.3 CUSTOMER SUPPLY The customer will need to supply the computer for communications with the instrument. An IBM compatible PC of 166MHz or above is required, with Windows 95 or above. It is advisable to have at least 32Mbyte RAM fitted. The system will operate with less RAM, but running too many applications may cause the computer to "hang up". The customer is also responsible for providing any mooring equipment required for the particular application. Modus IPS Operation Manual Section 1, Page A.DOC

4 2 COMMUNICATIONS The instrument is supplied as standard with a 500mm Y lead. This lead is fitted with a 10way female SubConn connector for connection to the instrument at one end, and banana plugs and a 9 way D type connector for connection to power and PC at the other end. The D type connector should be plugged into a spare serial port on the PC, and the banana plugs should be connected to a suitable DC supply. The standard convention of red for +ve and black for -ve applies. The lead is designed to allow RS232 communications between PC and instrument, for instrument setup and testing. The Modus IPS can also communicate using RS422 protocol if required, but note that the 9 pin D type connector is wired only for RS232 communications. The data acquisition microcontroller enables 15½ bit resolution (1:40,000) of the temperature sensor and strain gauge type pressure sensor, but resolution of the resonant quartz sensor is determined by the sampling rate. The actual output from the pressure sensor is a frequency, which is sampled by the instrument microprocessor and calibrated to a pressure value. The resolution of the calibrated pressure value is a function of the sampling rate; a faster sampling rate means a smaller sampling time and therefore a lower resolution: Rate 1Hz 2Hz 4Hz 8Hz Resolution (%FS) Data may be output in a variety of modes and formats. Full details are given in Section 2 of this manual, Software Operation. The instrument outputs fully calibrated data in ASCII text format, which can be read by the DataLog 400 program, or by a terminal emulation program such as ProComm or HyperTerminal. 5 3 INSTALLATION The modus IPS may be installed in any orientation, to suit the deployment. For suspension deployments, the housing is fitted with two stainless steel suspension lugs at the connector end of the housing. For fixed deployments, the housing is machined with flat surfaces to allow stable positioning. The housing is marked to indicate the datum position of the sensor. The markings are a cross on the sensor end face, and a circular groove around the housing, all painted white. 6 4 MAINTENANCE 4.1 CLEANING The external housing of the meter is manufactured from Acetal and is therefore corrosion resistant. The temperature sensor (if fitted) is manufactured from titanium, and is also therefore corrosion resistant. The integrity of the insrument will not therefore be adversely affected by a build up of marine growth. However, the pressure sensor itself is exposed to the water through a hole in the end cap of the sensor. Marine growth within this hole may dampen the pressure signal, resulting in any high-frequency pressure changes being filtered out. For this reason it is recommended that the pressure port be cleaned if there is substantial growth on the sensor. Take care not to damage the transducer face by scraping it or puncturing it. 4.2 O-RING SIZES Bulkhead Connector End Cap, sensor end 2 x plus 2 x 121 anti-extrusion rings 2 x plus 2 x 640 anti-extrusion rings Note that o-rings should be placed on the pressure [seawater] side of the anti-extrusion rings. 12 APPENDIX 4 GUARANTEE E CERTIFICATE G U A R A N T E E C E R T I F I C A T E ************************************************ All goods are subject to a 36-month guarantee against faulty materials and bad workmanship. Any faults to be declared within 36 months from date of despatch, in writing to Valeport Limited, who will replace or repair (at their option) any faulty items caused by bad workmanship or materials, (except displays and semiconductors which are only guaranteed for a 3 month period, and pressure and temperature sensors which are only guaranteed for a 12 month period). Valeport Limited shall be under no liability for: 1) Any consequential loss or damage of any kind whatsoever. 2) For any defect or deficiency judged by Valeport Limited to be caused by wear and tear or of improper or unskilled handling of the goods or by any repair or attempted repair or dismantling by any one other than Valeport Limited or persons authorised to do so by Valeport Limited. 3) Batteries and other consumables supplied with the equipment, which are not covered by this guarantee. Due to the specialised nature of the instrument it should, if possible, be returned to the factory for repair or servicing. The type and serial numbers of the instrument should always be quoted, together with full details of any fault or the service required. Equipment returned to Valeport Limited for servicing must be adequately packed, preferably in the special box supplied and shipped with transportation charges prepaid. Return transport charges are also to the account of the customer. Note: Any items supplied as part of a system, which are not manufactured by Valeport Limited, are covered by the individual manufacturer's guarantee of the equipment supplied. MODEL NUMBER...
