1 News Release Sept. 12, 2016 Reynolds Has Now Returned $10.02 Million in Fee Money Latest $2 Million Giveback to Communities Most Ever HAMILTON, Ohio The Auditor s Office could have purchased a lot of gadgets, contracted a lot of services, padded a lot of salaries and hired a lot of people with an additional $10 million over the past eight years. Instead, Auditor Roger Reynolds has now returned that amount of money to local governments with this year s record-breaking $2 million giveback. Since becoming Auditor in 2008, Reynolds has now returned a total of $10.02 million to local governments such as schools, cities, townships, libraries and parks. Instead of using that money for office operations, it has gone back to help educate children, build roads, fund police and fire, and directly benefit local taxpayers. The Real Estate department was spending $4 million annually before Reynolds took office. Now the annual expenses are running at about $2 million. The formula to this success is no secret professional staff, new technology and conservative principles. Through sound management and innovation, the office serves taxpayers at a high level and meets all statutory obligations. Speaking personally, I d rather my tax money go toward a real need and not administrative costs, said Auditor Reynolds. We continue to prove the size of government can be reduced and still operate at a high level. Under Reynolds leadership, the Auditor s Office has returned surplus real estate fund money every year something done only once previously, in This year s return of $2 million is the highest ever. Reynolds returned $1.99 million last year and $1.93 million in For calculating and distributing real estate tax collections to local governments, the state legislature sets the fee that county auditors collect from levy funds to pay for those administrative costs as well as much of the real estate operations of county auditor offices. The areas with higher property taxes see more of the return but the percentage is equal. The Lakota Local School District is receiving $462,480 in refunded fee money this year, followed by Butler County s various levies and the general fund which will receive $301,593 collectively. The Fairfield City School District will also collect more than $200,000 with a refund of $229,570. Three other entities will be collecting more than $100,000 West Chester Township, $170,589; Middletown City Schools, $129,466; and Hamilton City Schools, $118,232.
2 Over the course of the last nine tax years, Reynolds has returned $2.3 million to Lakota Schools; $1.5 million to Butler County s various levies and the general fund; $1.1 million to Fairfield Schools; $804,000 to West Chester Township; 663,000 to Middletown Schools; and $617,000 to Hamilton Schools. All schools combined have received nearly $6.2 million, townships nearly $1.4 million and cities and villages $462,000.
