1 Page 1 of 11 Credit by Examination Guidelines Academic Catalog Marylhurst University recognizes the value of experiential learning and provides admitted undergraduate degree students the opportunity to earn college credit for that learning through several examination programs. Those programs include: College Level Examination Program (CLEP) DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST) Excelsior College Examination (ECE/UEXCEL) New York University Foreign Language Proficiency Examination (NYUFLP) Marylhurst currently administers NYUFLP exams. We accept credit for but do not administer CLEP, DSST, and ECE/UEXCEL exams. General Policies on Credit by Examination Marylhurst s minimum credit-granting score for standardized testing is equivalent to a letter grade of B. While the American Council on Education (ACE) recommends a minimum credit-granting score equivalent to a letter grade of C for all standardized tests, it is up to each institution to establish creditgranting and transfer policies reflective of its own educational philosophy and culture. It is our experience that Marylhurst students bring with them a level of experiential learning that fosters excellence, scholarship, and rigor in the classroom, where multiple means of assessing learning are available. Our expectations are no less for programs that provide students alternative ways to demonstrate their learning utilizing only one assessment tool, such as credit by examination. A maximum of 45 quarter credits earned through credit by examination may be applied to a student s undergraduate degree program at Marylhurst University. Students who do not achieve Marylhurst s minimum passing score may retake an exam, but must wait at least nine (9) months from the original test date. Scores on tests taken before the nine-month waiting period will not be accepted. Credit earned through testing will not be awarded if the content: - duplicates credit previously applied to a student s undergraduate degree program - is more elementary than a course in which the student has already received credit Credit by examination is considered transfer credit and does not apply toward the residency requirement of 45 quarter credits through Marylhurst.

2 Page 2 of 11 Credit earned by students through examination programs prior to admission to Marylhurst may be transferred to Marylhurst through official transcripts from the respective testing agency. However, scores must meet Marylhurst s current minimum passing levels in order for credit to be accepted. All scores for credit by examination must be received by the Office of Admissions one term prior to a student s graduation term. Since it can take several weeks for official results to be sent from testing agencies, students need to complete all exams at least one terms prior to graduation. For example, students planning a June graduation should complete all exams during the preceding winter quarter to insure scores are submitted to the Office of Admissions by spring quarter, in time for June graduation. Although students may take examinations prior to or after coming to Marylhurst, Marylhurst will not accept the credit until after admission as an undergraduate degree-seeking student. After degree admission, students should consult with their academic adviser prior to taking any standardized tests to determine the usefulness of the credit in their degree program. The written permission of the academic adviser is required for any exams taken after degree admission. NOTE: Marylhurst University s Credit by Examination Guidelines is updated annually to reflect changes implemented by the testing agencies as well as Marylhurst curriculum and transfer credit policy. 9 NYUFLP: NEW YORK UNIVERSITY FOREIGN LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY EXAMINATION PROGRAM New York University Foreign Language Proficiency (NYUFLP) exams are non-standardized two- and threehour timed tests designed to test students proficiency in over 50 languages. Credit may be awarded at both the lower- and upper-division level, depending on the level of proficiency demonstrated. Students may register to take a two-hour 12-point exam for a maximum of 18 lower-division credits, or a threehour 16-point exam for a maximum of 18 lower- and 6 upper-division credits (24 credits total). The format for most of the exams includes the following: The 12-point Exam (18 lower-division credits) This two-hour exam includes a) a listening comprehension component, b) translation from English to the test language, c) translation from the test language to English, and d) writing a short essay in the test language on a general topic. The 16-Point Exam (18 lower- and 6 upper-division credits) This three-hour exam is identical to the two-hour exam with the addition of a 350-word essay, more complex in nature, designed to assess the student s mastery of the test language at a higher level. Page 9 of 11 Note: Unlike standardized tests for which students either earn all the credit or none of the credit, students may earn variable credit for NYU exams. For example, it s possible a student may not do well on one or more sections of the test, so instead of earning 24 credits, the student may be awarded a reduced number of credits. Fees The current fees for NYU Foreign Language exams are $385 for the 12 point (18-credit) version ($300 plus $85 NYU and MU processing fees), and $495 for the 16 point (24-credit) version, and ($400 plus $95 NYU and MU processing fees). Payment should be made directly to Marylhurst University. Registering for an NYU Exam Marylhurst is authorized by New York University to administer NYU Foreign Language exams, and the option is available to Marylhurst degree students every term. The registration deadline and dates for examinations are published online on the Marylhurst University website at marylhurst.edu/learningassessment/nyuflp under Credit by Examination. Day and evening exam times are available. NOTE: An NYUFLP registration form follows this information. If you have questions, please contact the Center for Experiential Learning & Assessment at / , ext. 6260, or Score Report/Transcript In the case of NYU Foreign Language Examinations, an official Letter of Equivalency from NYU stating the results of the exam is sent to both the student and to Marylhurst University. (Receipt of this letter may take up to 12 weeks.) Marylhurst creates a score report and uses it along with the NYU Letter of Equivalency to post the credits. No action on the part of the student is necessary.

10 Test Preparation No test preparation suggestions are provided by NYU. Students will be tested on reading, writing, and listening comprehension equivalent to a minimum of two years of completed college-level language instruction.
