1 The Brazilian Meat & Livestock Sector 3 RD Edition Background and Study Objective This will be the 3 rd edition of the Brazilian Meat & Livestock Report. The report is currently under development and will be delivered to clients at the end of January, The Brazilian meat sector is classified as one of the most dynamic in the world. Currently, Brazil is the 2 nd largest meat producer in the world and number one in international trade. Similar to the past two reports, this effort will also give considerable attention to the supply side of each of the three livestock activities. Data and information will be provided regarding characterization of farmers and ranchers, their management practices as well as their production costs. Aside from a detailed analysis of each meat chain, information will be provided on the prospects for traceability in the segments and distribution and logistics issues.

2 Poultry Meat While Brazil has a reputation for beef production, poultry exports now lead in meat protein exports. The competitive edge lies in the relatively low production costs of important raw materials corn and soybean meal and the well developed integrated farming systems in place. Furthermore, the population consumes a large portion some 70% - of poultry meats, a critical factor when equating global crises as seen in 2008 and Nurturing this meat demand on the domestic side is the fact that Brazil s disposable income level has been increasing and consequently, has shown strong signs of meat protein demand growth. On the industry side, consolidation has been the prime word. Sadia and Perdigão the leading players in the poultry industry are in the process of merging and other non traditional players JBS and Marfrig have also taking stakes in the sector. With this in mind, the report will also cover the implications of industry concentration on the supply side of the chain. The situation of second tier players will also be addressed in this effort. Beef At the industry level, major changes have taken place in the past 2-3 years. Firstly, there has been a major consolidation process which has taken place. Five years ago, 26% of the beef slaughter was in the hands of three companies. This figure now stands at over 30% for just two companies JBR and Marfrig. Most importantly, the leading players JBS and Marfrig have taken their operations overseas and both companies have considerable stakes in the beef (and poultry) markets on a global basis. On the domestic front, the last few years has also been characterized by a number of companies going out of business or entering chapter 11. These trends both at the industry and at the livestock level will be described and analyzed in this report. In considering the supply of live animals and the need to improve commercial relationships with industry, case examples will be given which will indicate the increasing or decreasing level of integration in the beef chain. Pork Meat Different from the beef and poultry meat segments, pork meat consumption has been rather static over the past 10 years. As a result, most of the leading players Sadia, Perdigão, JBS and Marfrig are concentrating efforts on processed products for the domestic market and special cuts for the export market. Export prospects were recently enhanced in November by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of the USDA which recognized the state of Santa Catarina as free of hoof and mouth disease. The implications are expected to be minimal for beef, yet in the case of pork, this state is a major producer and exporter of pork meats. Most importantly, this recognition by the USDA will have positive implications for other potential importing countries, including Japan and Korea. The implications of this USDA recognition will be addressed in this report. 2

3 Meat Availability Forecast As was done in the last edition of this report, an update of the domestic supply and demand for meats will be estimated to give the reader a better idea of potential meat exports. This forecast will be for a 10-year period and will also give importance to the main drivers for production, export and imports. The forecast will include a gap analysis from the previous report and also qualify any major changes. Study Methodology The report is based on AgraFNP s vast data and information base on the livestock and meat segment. The report heavily relied on extensive desk research by the study team as well as select interviews with specialists in each of the meat chains. Report Content: The report will be completed in January, 2011 and delivered to clients by the end of January, Similar to past reports, the effort will consist of over 250 pages, including charts and tables. Aside from a detailed analysis of the three meat segments, company profiles of the major industry players will be included. Data in the report will cover full-year Who Should Buy this Report? 7 Maurício Mendes, CEO Agra FNP. Maurício has been with the company for 13 years and started his career at Agra FNP in the commercial and marketing area. Soon after, he became a senior analyst in the consulting division, responsible for the technical and economic aspects of the ad hoc projects. In this position, his main responsibilities were the coordination of feasibility projects, financial analysis and risk assessment services. Although Maurício has taken the CEO role at Agra FNP since 2005, he is actively involved in most major projects, primarily in the analysis efforts and final presentations made to clients. Prior to Agra FNP, he was a consultant with GCONCI, the leading agricultural consulting group for the citrus sector in Brazil. Based on his 20 years of experience as a citrus grower, Maurício has conducted numerous projects in the citrus sector as well as coffee, sugar cane and other fruits and vegetables. Maurício is a agronomic graduate from the University of São Paulo ESALQ and received his master s in Business Administration from Fundação Getúlio Vargas University. Richard John Brostowicz, Business Intelligence Lead. Richard has been with Agra FNP since 2003 and since this date, has been involved in setting up and managing the business intelligence division of the company. In the short period with the company, Richard has supervised and worked on over twenty five projects in consulting and market research in the areas of agricultural risk analysis, feasibility and site selection efforts, market assessment jobs in the agricultural and livestock sectors, new business development programs for foreign investors as well as final analysis on all market research initiatives with multinational and Brazilian clients. Prior to Agra FNP, he worked at Monsanto s Brazilian operation located in São Paulo for 24 years. In this company, Richard set up the Business Intelligence department and headed up the New Business Development division for some 8 years. Other departments which he managed at Monsanto included Planning and Manufacturing. Some of the highlights of his career at Monsanto include the launch of Nutrasweet in Brazil, the successful approval of Lactotropin (Bovine Somatotropin) for use in Brazil and the reorganization and implementation of a new distribution program for agricultural chemicals and seeds. Richard also worked for some eight years as financial director for a venture capital firm in Brazil, having a portfolio of seven companies with equity investments of U$25 million. He received his bachelor s degree in marketing from the University of Wisconsin and later completed a post-graduate program in economics with OAS Organization of American States. 7
