1 Information for Candidates Intelligence Graduate Trainee Analyst Programme Application Pack

2 Accountabilities The graduate analyst will be responsible for undertaking a two year development programme which will include various postings across the unit, responsibilities will vary across roles but will include: Identify information requirements and manage qualitative and quantitative data from local and national organisations. Negotiate with external sources to access necessary data. Manage and interrogate information using various analysis techniques and summarise key findings from a range of qualitative and quantitative information in order to meet the needs of CQC, including: Selecting the most appropriate analysis tools and the most pertinent data. Developing systems, processes and tools for analysis and interpretation as appropriate. Undertake basic statistical testing on analysis as appropriate. Quality assurance of own and colleagues work. Leave a clear and concise audit trail that will be of use to others doing future analysis. Presentation and explanation of the results of analysis to all levels of internal and external audiences using multiple media and output styles, drawing appropriate attention to significant outcomes of analysis. Ongoing development of systems and methodology in response to new developments in data and strategy through the identification of opportunities for improvement and encouraging the sharing of good practice. Have the appropriate knowledge, skills and experience to actively promote diversity and equality of opportunity, treat everyone with dignity and respect and avoid unlawful discrimination. Specific skills and experience A minimum 2:2 undergraduate degree score in any discipline by start of employment (expected in September or October 2014). There is no minimum criteria for previous work experience. Candidates will be assessed for their current levels and potential to develop the following skills:

Working together Working and co-operating willingly with others, both in own work team and other working groups in pursuit of collective goals. Continually learning and improving Establishing CQC as a 'learning organisation' evaluating success and learning from mistakes to ensure continuous improvement. Analytical Thinking Using quantitative and qualitative information, looking for trends and outliers, providing evidence based judgements. Intelligent thinking i.e. intelligent interpretation (e.g. considers what the data and information means and is saying). Add insight and value (e.g. by making technical analysis meaningful, by identifying issues with the data and information). Analytical Skills Excel skills working with fairly big data sets (e.g. 100 lines). Quantitative analysis experience of reviewing indicators, data sets, trends over time, understands what makes good indicator/measure, understands spread of data, coverage of data, understands z scores etc. Qualitative coding, knowledge and understanding of coding systems and processes.

4 Quality Orientation Will follow rules/procedures/guidelines as appropriate, flawless on the quality of data, attention to detail and will identify and own up to mistakes. Communicating with clarity and confidence Verbally and in writing (e.g. presents information in different forms, selects the right approach for audience, clearly explains relatively complex information/technical information, avoids using analytical jargon, communicates across spectrum of stakeholders, confidence and adapts to all levels, excellent technical report writing skills). In addition to information about you we are looking for a personal statement for why you think you are suitable for the role and evidence in the following areas: demonstrated analytical skills and thinking working involving data or information and how you ensured the work was of good quality communication and working with a range of different people Candidates successful at the initial will progress to Stage 2 Stage 2 Online Numerical and Verbal reasoning tests We are looking for candidates who can communicate, use data and interpret evidence. If you are successful at the initial sift stage, based on your application form, we will invite you to complete online numerical and verbal reasoning tests The verbal reasoning test consists of 15 questions on passages of text and the numerical reasoning test consists of 12 questions based on information presented in tables. Each question has a time limit and it takes candidates on average 12 minutes to complete each test.

6 Stages 3 and 4 Pre-Assessment Centre Talent Test and Assessment Centre Based on the application form, numerical and verbal reasoning tests we will select candidates for these final stages. If you are invited to take the online pre-assessment centre talent test (stage 3) you will also receive an invite to the assessment centre (stage 4) - the final stage of the process. The assessment centre will involve a practical analytical test, presentation and structured interview. You will be provided with more information on the assessment if you reach these stages. Interviews for the roles will take place in Bristol in early August We expect successful candidates to start in October 2014.
