HOW SHOULD CHRISTIANS PRAY Matthew 6:5-15; Luke 11:1-4 VIDEO ILLUSTRATION: LORD S PRAYER We are taking a look tonight at what many refer to as the Lord s Prayer. Let me get a little technical with you if you don t mind. The actual prayer that Jesus offered to the Heavenly Father is much longer than the one we will be looking at tonight and can be found in John 17. The prayer found in Matthew 6 and Luke 11 is what many have called the Lord s Prayer but it would actually be better entitled the Disciples prayer. Why? Well, it is all about what Jesus taught when He instructed the Disciples how to pray. In Luke s version, Jesus s disciples asked Him to teach them to pray. Luke 11:1 2 NLT, Once Jesus was in a certain place praying. As he finished, one of his disciples came to him and said, Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples. 2 Jesus said, This is how you should pray: Back in Matthew s version, in chapter 6, Jesus goes into much more detail on the mechanics of how to and how not to pray. In Matthew 6: 5-9 He says when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 6 But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. 7 And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. 9 In this manner, therefore, pray: 10 Our Father They re asking Him for a formula. They re asking Him How can we pray so that God will listen to us like He listens to You?
They know that prayer is supposed to do something. It s supposed to have power. It s actually supposed to accomplish something They re just not so sure they know how to go about it How should I pray, in what manner? What s the formula? How can I be effective in my prayer life? So they asked Jesus teach us to pray And then Jesus teaches them what we call the Disciple s Prayer This prayer model has been beloved by Christians for ages. We memorize it. We sing songs about it We repeat it reverently And well we should these are the words of Jesus When I was a kid I can remember when we used to repeat it at church on Sundays. We knew it by heart. In fact I bet most of you know it by heart! So why don t we repeat together right now: (Our Father ) Matthew 6:9 13: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come, Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. That s great stuff. But did Jesus intend for us to simply repeat these words in order to pray? No It was an answer to the question, How should we pray? not What should we repeat. I mean there s nothing wrong with that, if you makes you happy - but Jesus warned His disciples against vain repetitions, in Matthew 6:7
And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. Being repetitious in prayer appeals to a lot of people. There s something about saying the same thing over and over again in prayer that makes people believe it helps their prayers seem more holy and reverent and maybe even be more effective. I ve heard people say that they admire the Muslims because of how much they pray. They say, You know, Muslims pray 3 times a day. They pray more than most of us do! Now, if you asked those people: Do you know WHAT they say when they pray? Often times they won t know. Islamic worshipers pray 3 times a day the same rehearsed prayers, over and over and over again. It would be like us praying the Lord s Prayer (and nothing else) day after day after day. Repetition seems a righteous thing to do. Many people will repeat O GOD or O LORD over and over again throughout their prayers hoping to communicate their urgency and devotion to Him as they build their prayers to the point of intensity. There is something about repetition that makes people believe God will pay more attention, or that He ll be impressed because of the intensity of their devotion. But you don t have to do that. God s not impressed by how many words we use. The formula for praying an effective prayer is NOT in repetition or ritual. The formula for effective prayer is to talk TO God with a right heart. That is in fact what the disciple s prayer was meant to accomplish. It is the how to manual for approaching God with the right heart. It s like a phone conversation (flip out cell phone) Picture calling your best friend. And you start out your conversation saying: Hey Fred O Fred O great and marvelous Fred, my friend and confidante. Please share with me your insights and your wisdom and your gracious knowledge.
And then you continue that prayer using flowery language that s not quite real. In fact, every time you call Fred you repeat the same conversation day after day after day. You know, after a while, Fred s going to put you on caller ID and he won t pick up. I m not saying God will not pick up, but I will say that you are probably not poised to hear from God. Every time we go to God it has to be in the now rather than in the repletion of past prayers. It isn t just about using some good words for the day. It is about relevant words of acknowledgement for the moment. How do you speak to your best friend each day? It has to be a real conversation rather than a talk about the weather. When you call Fred he wants to talk to a REAL person. He wants to have a REAL conversation with you. He wants to hear how things are going with you right now. He wants to listen to you. He s your friend. When you call your friends you have a CONVERSATION. It is the same way with God. Jesus model was meant to make us aware of that fact. Jesus spoke to the Father in a very personal son-like way and the disciples wanted that kind of connection for themselves too. That is why they asked Him to show them how to pray. So Jesus starts out in a very practical and personal way by saying, Matthew 6:9, In this manner, therefore, pray: 1. OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN: He s not just my Father guys, He s your FATHER. You need to connect with God personally and relationally. He loves you and loves to be called to as our Father. Romans 8:15-16 NLT, So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, Abba, Father. 16 For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God s children. He wants that kind of a personal intimate conversation with you because He is your Father. (Boy is it hard to get your kids to communicate boys)
He wants this is one on one PERSONAL conversation with us. That s why Jesus said in Matthew 6:6, But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. I kind of get a little jealous when Laurie is talking to the kids and so I will cut in at times and try to get in on the conversation. I can see that it creates a dilemma for her though because she called them and wanted to have some personal time with them. So I have to make sure that I m not just riding on the coat tails of her phone conversations and call them myself. I want that personal time together with them too. Yes, there are times when I don t mind talking on the phone with her there and the kids on speaker phone and there is a place for that. That s like congregational prayer, but I can t survive with just that. ILLUS: Have you ever seen a your teenagers on the phone to their girlfriends? They ll try to use your cell phone so that they can get off by themselves or they ll use the phone in a room where they can close the door. Why do they do that? Because it s private conversation. They have some serious talking they want to do and they don t want you listening in. You might need to in some cases - but not all! That s what real personal prayer is all about, it s about getting off by yourself and having a serious/ private conversation with God. As I was preparing this sermon, I asked myself: why do we call people? Why do we pick up the phone and call our friends or our family? And I could only think of a couple of reasons 2. HALLOWED BE YOUR NAME: Worship His Name Proverbs 18:10 NLT, The name of the LORD is a strong fortress; the godly run to him and are safe. What are His names? El-Shaddai God of the Mountains or The Almighty God. El-Elyon The Most High God or The Exalted One El-Olam God of Eternity or God the Everlasting One
El-Berith God of the Covenant El-Roi God who sees me or God of vision Elohim It is a revelation of the infinite nature and plural majesty of God. Jehovah-Jireh The LORD will provide Jehovah -Nissi The LORD is my banner Jehovah -Mekaddesh The LORD sanctifies Jehovah -Shalom The LORD is peace Jehovah -Sabaoth The LORD of hosts Jehovah -Rohi The LORD is my shepherd Jehovah -Tsidkenu The LORD is our righteousness Jehovah -Shammah The LORD is there Adon or Adonai The Lord The Ancient of Days, The Rock, Our Refuge, Our Fortress, Our Shield, Our Sun, Our Refiner, Our King, Our Sovereign, Our Judge, Our Shepherd, Our Father, The Father of mercies, Father of lights; Father of glory. Ands we have met Him and seen Him in the person of His Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ. Botando flores. It helps us to remember who we are talking to and how relevant He is to any situation we find ourselves in. He is worthy to be praise and honored no matter what. 3. YOUR KINGDOM COME YOUR WILL BE DONE ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN: Luke 12:31 NLT, Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and he will give you everything you need. Pray His Agenda First Specifically to your situation. God's priorities: Saving the lost Guiding those in authority, parental, spiritual, governmental, workplace. His will in us. 4. GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD: Psalm 121:1-2 NLT, I look up to the mountains does my help come from there? 2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth!
Depend on Him for Everything Ask God for what you want and need and then trust Him for the answer. Now, some people don t call God when they need help because they re afraid of bothering Him. Dwight L. Moody observed: Some people think God does not like to be troubled with our constant asking. The way to trouble God is not to ask at all. Celestine Sibley in "Day by Day") admitted, I have sometimes feared it is presumptuous to take up God s time with my problems. But, the Lord s Prayer is as specific as bread and debt. God is NOT bothered when you and I talk to Him about little problems in our lives. In fact, He finds great joy in the fact you want to share those little things with Him. 5. FORGIVE US OUR DEBTS AS WE FORGIVE OUR DEBTORS: Get your Heart Right with God and People! 1John 1:9-10 NLT, But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts. You might look at 1 John 1:9 as having to do with salvation and that sin has been forgiven as far as salvation is concerned but Matthew 6 is a model for prayer. It isn t a pray it once and you are done. This is a model for continued prayer for the disciples with the Father. We need to get our hearts right with God whenever we go to Him. Ask God to check your heart and motives. Receive His forgiveness for any area that He brings to mind. Forgive anyone who has offended you in any way. You can even forgive people in advance. And we need to get our hearts right with others too. I have to bring your attention to the end of the prayer because it is interesting that Jesus revisits this subject once He finished His model for prayer.
Matthew 6:14 15 NLT, If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. 15 But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins. Receiving and extending forgiveness to others is essential in having a good prayer life with the Father. 6. AND DO NOT LEAD US INTO TEMPTATION BUT DELIVER US FROM THE EVIL ONE: Engage in Spiritual Warfare Ephesians 6:12 NLT, For we* are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Take your stand against the enemy and fight the good fight of faith. Every lie that the enemy has told you should be replaced with the truth of God's Word and prayer. As Paul finishes his charge to the Ephesians he says, In Ephesians 6:17 18 NLT, Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.18 Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere. 7. FOR YOURS IS THE KINGDOM AND THE POWER AND THE GLORY FOREVER: Express Faith in Gods Ability Jeremiah 32:17-18 NLT, O Sovereign LORD! You made the heavens and earth by your strong hand and powerful arm. Nothing is too hard for you! 18 You show unfailing love to thousands, but you also bring the consequences of one generation s sin upon the next. You are the great and powerful God, the LORD of Heaven s Armies. End your prayer time by reminding yourself of God's ability. Return to praise and make your faith declarations. Your kingdom come - all rule belongs to you. Yours is the power- all mightiness flows from you Yours is the Glory - Your victory shall be complete. THIS IS HOW JESUS INSTRUCTED US TO PRAY!
