10 ( ) Foreign Language Teaching and Research (bimonthly) Mar Vol. 37 No. 2 Abstracts of major papers in this issue Some thoughts on college English teaching by Cai Jigang p. 83 As college English teaching reforms carried out in the past two years have claimed the increasing attention both in the foreign language education field and nationwide there is much controversy over such issues as the task of college Eng2 lish teaching the feasibility of the new teaching mode the length of teaching general English the necessity of the CET Test and the validity of English2medium instruction. The paper makes comments on them on the basis of the analysis of the different views. It is believed that conflicting views reflecting various language theories and teaching experience will surely contribute to the development of college English teaching. A review of L2 grammar teaching theories by Dai Weidong & Chen L iping p. 92 Grammar teaching has been ignored since 1970s as many researchers insisted that conscious learning of grammar forms cannot be transformed into automatic linguistic competence. However recent studies in SLA stimulate people to re2 consider the function of grammar teaching. Firstly it has been proved that attention is a key factor in language learning. Though explicit teaching of grammar forms cannot change the sequence of grammar acquisition it can speed up the acqui2 sition. Secondly the concept of grammar has been extended. New studies show that grammar is not limited to linguistic forms. Instead grammar is various procedural and tied to discourses. In a way form is meaning. Under such new the2 oretical frameworks many new grammar teaching approaches have arisen such as Processing Instruction Interactional Feedback Task2Based Instruction. The writers of this article think researchers are nowpaying more attention to grammar and grammar teaching than language teachers so it is hoped that this article can arouse teachersattention to view gram2 mar and teach grammar from a new perspective. Grammatical metaphors in English language learning by Xiong X ueliang & L iu Donghong p. 100 From a statistical point of view this article explores the ontogenetic status quo of the second language learner for the acquisition of the ability to use grammatical metaphors in second language production. The conclusion is that such capabili2 ties mature with the second language proficiency which could also be partly accounted for in a cog2pragmatic framework. An overview of foreign language education in the Yuan Dynasty by Gao Xiaof ang p. 106 The Yuan government establishedhui Hui Guo Zi Xue to train translators who were able to understand such for2 eign languages as Estifi Persian and even Arabic. This was something new in the ancient education history of our coun2 try. Therefore the foreign language education activities which China carried on in an organized way should be dated back to this period. As the establishment of the school was due to the need for foreign trade its foreign language teaching has enjoyed a relative high degree of practicability. Economy in syntactic computations by Dai M anchun p. 132 Economy which is of prime importance in minimalist syntactic studies leaves much for debate particularly in terms of global economy local economy and their constraints on derivations. The nature of economy of representation has been explored in terms ofstructural economy principleevidenced by Chinese verbless sentences ( Tang 2002). This paper aims to study economy from the perspective of syntactic derivation. It is based on a critical analysis of Chomsky s Global Economy (1995a 1995b) and related positions in Collins(1997) and Johnson & Lappin ( ). The author pro2 poses that derivations are only constrained by the Principle of Local Economy. It is further argued that lexical items in Nu2 meration are applied to merger operations according to Interface requirements and subcategorization features and that re2 merger operations result from strong features of functional categories. 160
