2 Welcome to the Department of Management The Department offers an undergraduate degree (BSc Management), a portfolio of 9 Master s degrees, and an outstanding PhD programme. An academic community within the LSE The Department of Management is a fully-integrated academic unit within a world-leading social science university, ranked #2 in the world in this field (QS World University Rankings 2013). As such, it is a core part of the LSE s academic community, and develops and delivers the School s degree programmes in the field of management, as well as being the centre of academic study of management and organisations. Faculty and students in the department benefit from close collaboration and cross-disciplinary links with the other departments across the School. Its teaching is fully integrated into the School s overall teaching programme, which is delivered by more than 20 academic departments, including core business disciplines with the Department of Finance, the Department of Accounting, and a full range of other social science disciplines from social policy and government to philosophy and anthropology. Its Master s portfolio includes a two-year Master s in Management (the only UK programme to be integrated with the CEMS Master s in International Management), as well as business-oriented Master s degrees with economics as the unifying discipline, and a range of oneyear specialist Master s degrees. It also contributes to the LSE Summer School, LSE Executive Summer School, University of London International Programme, and the TRIUM Executive MBA. Research The Department s faculty aims to produce outstanding scholarly research about organisations and management as well as use research methods and knowledge to address problems in business, government and society. The main subject areas of research within the Department are employment relations and human resource management, information systems and innovation, managerial economics and strategy, marketing, operational research, organisational behaviour, and public management. Faculty in the Department publish their research in leading academic journals for these various subject areas. 4 Meet our Programme Director 1What are the core learnings your students will take away from the programme? What we want to achieve is that the students not only function in a management context, we want them to be able to think independently about Management and Strategy. And for that, they need frameworks. And so, this is what we strive to do. We want to give students those frameworks, explain them and show how they can be applied. These frameworks will typically come from economics in the core courses, but also from other areas of management in the optional courses. Students wishing to study Management and Strategy don t need to have studied Economics before. However, they would need to have some basic interest in seeing how economic arguments apply to a management context. We don t develop economics as an end in itself but, indeed, we take economic concepts and we apply them to management. Dr Jörn Rothe, Programme Director 2 3 What is your strategic vision for the programme, and where do you see it in the next 5 years? We are very happy with the way the programme looks now. Management and Strategy has been running for a long while and we believe it s in a very good shape. Therefore, our job is mainly to keep it current. We also want the students to get back to us after five years of work and say they appreciate it even more, on the basis of their experience, than they did when they were here. How does the programme contribute to the LSE s core philosophy, understanding the causes of things? So the LSE s core philosophy is about understanding the causes of things and the programme is all about that. For us, success in Management doesn t just come from wanting it most. Management is something to think hard about. How organisations work and how they interact strategically has its own logic. In order to understand this logic, you need frameworks and it s these frameworks that we want to explain. 4 5 How does this programme differ fundamentally from other similar degrees, such as an MBA? The programme is very different from an MBA. For example, we use case studies to aid teaching but do not use them to dig deeper into the pros and cons of various options. We want to analyse a case and uncover its intrinsic logic. We also want to explain how frameworks from economics and from the social sciences can help you to understand the case and make better decisions. The programme is also very different from other management programmes. Other traditional management programmes would typically be structured around the functional areas Finance, Marketing or Human Resource Management. In this programme, we think of management as organisations that interact, so there are two core courses in Organisations and there are two core courses in Strategy. And in both of these core courses, we use analytical models. Therefore, we take models from economics, but we don t want to delve into them as an end in itself. We want to show how these models apply to understanding Management and Strategy. What would you say to a prospective student thinking of applying to join the programme next year? This course is right for you if you have an interest in how economic thinking is applied to management and strategy, and if you have some quantitative background so that you can understand simple economic models and data analysis. We want to know two things when we consider applications: We want to know if you thought about whether this is the right programme for you. There are many good reasons for wanting to be in London or at the LSE, but we want to know why you think that this programme is right for you. So the personal statement is quite important. And then, of course, we want to know if you are good enough. 5 Programme overview Programme structure If you have a numerical background, an analytical mind, and an interest in economics, management and strategy, our MSc Management and Strategy programme will be ideally suited to you. Our challenging one-year programme provides a rigorous analytical approach to management, focusing on developing critical thinking and in-depth understanding in relation to managerial economics Key features and its relevance in organisations and strategy. Concentration on interdisciplinary critical thinking skills (rather than vocational practice) makes this course distinct from conventional business school programmes like MBAs. And a diverse, selective intake, and a carefully designed course structure, creates a vibrant learning experience. 6 Profiles The class Our MSc Management and Strategy programme is aimed at early-career graduates from all over the world. Most students will have just finished their undergraduate bachelor s degree; some will already have a few years work experience to bring to the classroom. The course is aimed at numerate, ambitious, talented students. Florian Bornhauser (Switzerland), MSc Management and Strategy Having earned my bachelor s degree in the very practical environment of a Swiss business school, I wanted to pursue my master s degree at a university that would promise a higher level of analytical rigour. That is, I was looking for a university that would approach teaching in an academic-analytical way, as opposed to only teaching best practice, as is generally done in business schools. The LSE and the MSc Management and Strategy have fulfilled these expectations in many ways. We are taught by world-class professors who are leaders in their fields and who take the time to interact with students on a personal basis to discuss issues.
