2 7 9 Reading Read the text and the statements about the artist Damien Hirst. True or false? Write T or F. Correct the false sentences He s British. He s been famous for about ten years. He s famous only in the UK. He s very rich. He produces artworks with dead animals. He once sold one piece of art for million. Damien Hirst: death and diamonds Damien Steven Hirst (born 7th June 965) is a British artist and entrepreneur. He became famous in the 990s and is the most well-known member of the group known as the Young British Artists, which dominated the art scene in Britain during that time. He is internationally famous, and is Britain s richest living artist. Death is a central theme in Hirst s works. He became famous for a series of artworks in which dead animals (including a sheep and a cow) are preserved in formaldehyde. A 4-foot (4. m) shark in a glass case, The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living, became the iconic work of British art in the 990s and the symbol of Britart worldwide. Hirst has also made spin paintings, created on a spinning circular surface, and spot paintings, which are rows of randomly-coloured circles created by his assistants. In 007, Hirst created For the Love of God, which consisted of a platinum human skull which was covered with 8,60 diamonds. It cost 4 million to produce and it was later sold for 50 million. In September 008, he sold all the artworks in one of his exhibitions. He made million and broke the record for a one-artist auction. He sold one of his works, The Golden Calf, an animal with 8-carat gold horns and hooves, preserved in formaldehyde, for 0. million. In the early 000s, the originality of some of Hirst s creations was questioned and he was accused of copying other people s work. In one instance, he was legally challenged and he paid an undisclosed out-of-court settlement. He is still, however, Britain s richest living artist and will probably continue to be for some time. 3 7 9 Writing T Read the film review of Avatar and number the following (a j) in the order they occur ( 0). a b c d e f g h i j the main plot the reviewer s opinion when the reviewer saw it the name of the film the main characters when and where it is set when it was released who it was directed by the reviewer s recommendation the genre of the film Write a review (50 00 words) of a film that you have seen recently. Include this information: Paragraph : The film title, genre, its director and when it was released. Paragraph : The setting and plot of the film. Paragraph : Your opinion/what you liked most about it. Paragraph 4: Would you recommend the film? Who to? Film review I d like to recommend a film which I saw recently, called Avatar. In fact I first saw it at the cinema when it was released in 00 and I ve recently watched it again on television. It s an animated science fiction film and it was the first ever blockbuster -D film. It was directed by James Cameron. It s set in the year 54 on the planet of Pandora, and the main characters are an ex-marine called Jake Sulley, and a member of the Na vi race of people who inhabit the planet called Neytiri. The plot centres on their relationship as they try to stop humans from destroying the planet so they can obtain a rare and valuable mineral. The thing I liked most about the film is the visual effects. The colours and the detail are incredible and the -D effect is amazing. You really feel like you ve spent the duration of the movie actually on the planet of Pandora. The story is nothing special and not very original, but the film is all about the visuals. All in all, I loved the film and I would definitely recommend it. It s an easy film to watch for both children and adults. It s a film you won t forget, especially if you see the -D version. 6
