3 Opening Doors to a Better Future Introduction The world is changing by 2020 there will be five million fewer low skilled jobs in Britain than today. 40% of all jobs in 2020 will require a graduate level qualification. The top 10 jobs in demand in 2011 did not exist in Schools are preparing students for jobs that don t currently exist. Apprenticeships allow you to earn while you learn and is a genuine alternative to traditional academic choice. For those who wish to, this can lead to a higher qualification further down the line without being hampered with a large student loan that you have to pay back. When looking to recruit or promote staff, more and more companies are recognising the benefit of qualifications and experience gained through an Apprenticeship over purely academic studies. An Apprenticeship can boost your future earning potential and offer further opportunities to progress to a higher level. 3 Apprenticeships with Liverpool Chamber Training
4 What is an Apprenticeship? With an Apprenticeship you get the whole package: Hands-on experience you need for your chosen career. The qualifications and skills you ll need to get ahead. Real pay because with an Apprenticeship you get paid as you learn. What more could you ask for? Your employer will pay your wages and give you on the job and off the job training which will develop your work skills. You ll spend time with a training provider gaining skills and knowledge in your chosen occupational area that will be really useful in the job market. You will be able to improve your skills in problem solving, working in a team, planning and developing your own learning, organisational skills and understanding your rights and responsibilities at work. You will also improve your skills in Maths, English and ICT. An apprentice gains qualifications related to their job and, after achieving an Advanced Level Apprenticeship can progress part time into Higher Education while still in employment. 4 Apprenticeships with Liverpool Chamber Training
5 Levels of Apprenticeship Apprenticeships are increasingly recognised as the gold standard for work-based learning. Already more than 85,000 employers offer Apprenticeships. There are three levels of Apprenticeship available for those aged 16 and over. You will start your Apprenticeship at a level appropriate for you Intermediate Level Apprenticeship Apprentices work towards nationally recognised vocational qualifications at Level 2. They also improve their skills in Maths, English and ICT at the appropriate level. These provide the skills apprentices need for their chosen career and allow entry to an Advanced Level Apprenticeship. Advanced Level Apprenticeship Advanced apprentices work towards nationally recognised vocational qualifications at Level 3 and, in most cases, a relevant knowledge based certificate such as a BTEC. They also improve their skills in Maths, English and ICT at the appropriate level. To start this programme, apprentices should ideally have five GCSE s (grade C or above) or have completed an Intermediate Level Apprenticeship. Higher Apprenticeship Higher level apprentices work towards nationally recognised qualifications at Level 4 or 5 and, in some cases, a knowledge based qualification such as a Foundation Degree. 5 Apprenticeships with Liverpool Chamber Training
6 Case Studies Luke Mythen Luke Mythen who attended De La Salle Academy, is currently undertaking an Advanced Level Apprenticeship at Liverpool Chamber of Commerce. Luke joined Liverpool Chamber Training after completing his A- Levels at De La Salle academy as he wanted to gain experience in an office environment before starting university to become a teacher. Luke was informed by his teacher that Liverpool Chamber Training was the best place to start his career and gain another qualification before applying to university. Throughout his Apprenticeship, Luke has received on the job training from Liverpool Chamber Training tailored specifically towards his job role and has achieved a Technical Certificate in Business Administration at Level 3, he will also achieve his Functional Skill in ICT to develop his skills further. When Luke completes his Apprenticeship he is set to build on his skills gained through his Apprenticeship and will be attending university to do a teaching degree. Speaking of his achievement, Luke said Its not just about earning money, it s about gaining skills for life. 6 Apprenticeships with Liverpool Chamber Training
7 Case Studies Adele Connor Adele Connor who attended Broughton Hall Technology College is currently undertaking an Intermediate Level Apprenticeship in Business and Administration at Northwest Radio Communications Ltd. Adele was working full time as a waitress before starting her Apprenticeship at Northwest Radio Communications. Adele decided to seek an Apprenticeship through Liverpool Chamber Training as they were the training provider that offered the best roles to suit her needs. Whilst on the Apprenticeship programme, Adele has developed her listening skills and has gained skills for life in Problem Solving and Professional Writing. Speaking of her plans for the future Adele said I would love to progress within the business sector and become a successful entrepreneur. Speaking of the Apprenticeship Programme with Liverpool Chamber Training Adele said The Apprenticeship Programme has suited me well as I have been able to learn, earn and gain valuable work experience which have helped me progress in the sector and given me the skills I need for the future. 7 Apprenticeships with Liverpool Chamber Training
8 Case Studies Rebecca Darwent Rebecca Darwent left Sixth Form after working towards her A-Levels prior to starting a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Business and Administration at 2K Legal. Rebecca joined 2K Legal after completing her A-Level studies and decided to look for an Apprenticeship through Liverpool Chamber Training as they offered a wide choice of courses with prestigious companies throughout Merseyside. Since starting her Apprenticeship Rebecca has received on the job training from Liverpool Chamber Training as well as attending Training sessions at the Chamber to work towards her Technical Certificate. Rebecca feels she has grown as an individual and improved communication with other people and I has gained more knowledge on her existing computer skills. Speaking of the Apprenticeship Programme Rebecca said I would advise anyone unsure of their plans for their future to start an Apprenticeship with Liverpool Chamber Training as it helps you grow as a person and learn new skills. Many more choices are now available to me and I am much more employable. 8 Apprenticeships with Liverpool Chamber Training
9 Case Studies Graham Lewis After leaving North Liverpool Academy Graham is working towards an Advanced Level Apprenticeship in ICT. Graham left North Liverpool Academy after completing his A- Levels and decided he wanted to earn as he learned in a practical way. When Graham started looking for a job he was attracted to Liverpool Chamber of Commerce because of the company s excellent reputation throughout Merseyside. Graham is currently working towards his qualification and has undertaken his Functional Skills in ICT. When asked how he feels he had grown as an individual Graham said, I have learned to be more responsible and my IT Skills have improved since working here When asked about the Apprenticeship Programme Graham said My Apprenticeship has given me the perfect foundation to build my career and the combination of earning and learning at the same time has been great. 9 Apprenticeships with Liverpool Chamber Training
