3 Over the course of your career in the Royal Navy, Royal Marines or QARRNS you have acquired a deep pool of knowledge and a wide range of experience. If you are about to leave the Regular Service or have already left, why not join the Naval Careers Service and put that wealth of experience to good use. As a Careers Adviser (CA) you will play a vital and respected role in finding, nurturing and guiding tomorrow s recruits to the Naval Service.

4 THE JOB: As a CA you are the front line of recruiting and it is your job to ensure that the Naval Service (Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Reserve Forces, RFA and QARRNS) have the right number of committed young people joining them each year. You will also be involved in increasing awareness of these Services amongst the general public and potential recruits. 5 Your rewarding role will include: Providing advice and counselling to candidates considering careers in the Naval Service. Recruiting candidates by nurturing, conducting the interviews, administering selection tests and eligibility checks required by the recruitment process. Completing the documentation and processes to ensure candidates timely arrival at the Training Establishments. Establishing and maintaining close liaison with civilian employment staffs, careers counsellors in schools, youth training organisations and community leaders in order to represent the Naval Service wherever possible. Accompanying students on acquaint courses and visits. The adage no two days are the same must have been written for the Careers Service. The daily routine includes interviewing, testing, presenting and advising on the benefits of a career in the Royal Navy, but I frequently represent the Royal Navy during the evenings and at weekends in schools, colleges and many other diverse public events. We are co-located with the Army and the RAF. They are a good bunch of guys and we all work as a team just like onboard. 7 TRAINING: All CAs attend a comprehensive training course at the Royal Navy School of Recruiting (RNSR) at Bovington. The course syllabus includes theoretical and practical training in the recruiting tests, interviewing techniques, the selection interview process, report writing, administrative requirements, the computer record system TAFMIS, as well as practical acquaint visits to HMS Sultan, Collingwood, Nelson and RN and CNR Headquarters in Portsmouth. On a daily basis the work can be very varied, but most days I am responsible for conducting a formal interview with an applicant who has applied to join the Service. We also visit schools and give talks, liaise with job centres and other agencies responsible for the employment of young people. You must be prepared to answer a variety of questions not just about recruitment matters but all things Naval. However, the main part of the day to day routine is dealing with enquiries or giving advice on potential careers in the RN and then taking individuals through all aspects of the recruiting process. 8 SKILLS: CAs need to be able to communicate with young people from a diverse range of backgrounds, be enthusiastic about Service life, have an understanding of the type of individual suited to the Service and have a broad knowledge of the range of career opportunities available. To be a successful CA you should have some empathy with young people, you need to be non-judgemental particularly with regard to appearance, timekeeping etc. You have to remember these are young men and woman who in the main have no idea about life in Service, what is involved and what careers are available. 9 ELIGIBILITY: Opportunities are available for Regular serving (and ex-regular) personnel of the Naval Service (Royal Navy, Royal Marines and QARRNS). Applications will be considered from: Regular Service WOs, Senior Rates and SNCOs with a minimum of 12 years Service who have held the substantive rate of PO/SGT RM for a minimum of two years prior to completion of Regular Service. Ex-Regular Service WOs, Senior Rates and SNCOs up to three years after their Termination Date from Regular Service. Ex-Regular Service WOs, Senior rates and SNCOs who have subsequently maintained currency in the RNR/RMR up to five years after their Termination Date from Regular Service. All candidates must be under the age of 52 on commencement of employment. You must be in possession of a clean driving licence, clear of unspent convictions, security cleared, and in Medical Employability Category P2. Individuals may not apply if discharged from the Royal Navy, Royal Marines or QARRNS. Individuals who have not been recommended for further Naval Service on their last appraisal before leaving the Service are also not eligible to apply. A letter or recommendation from your Commanding Officer or employer (if you have left the Naval Service) will be required. PAY: From 1 April 2008 CAs are paid on a scale from 26,363 to 38,754.

10 TERMS AND CONDITIONS: Personnel currently join the NCS on Full Time Reserve Service (Limited Commitment) (FTRS) which involves leaving the Regular Service and joining the Royal Fleet Reserve. If you elected to remain on Armed Forces Pension Scheme 75 (AFPS75) you will be eligible to start an FTRS Commitment after 30 days have elapsed from your TX date. The most satisfying thing is the feedback I get off the RM candidates who appreciate all the information I have given them. As an ACA you realise you can really help the Corps in a big way. Preparation is the key factor for success in the RM. If I can help someone who is motivated enough to get himself into Commando training then only he can let himself down. 11 If you have elected to move to Armed Forces Pension Scheme 05 (AFPS05) then you should be aware of the regulations concerning repayment of part or all of the Early Departure Payment (EDP) if you accept an FTRS commitment without a break of at least the period represented by the EDP lump sum. If you are in receipt of an AFPS pension and engaged in the FTRS your pension may be abated in full or in part. The new rate of pay plus abated pension cannot exceed your old rate of pay. The point of contact for advice on pay and pensions is the JPAC. Serving personnel can log on to JPA and submit an i-support request detailing the information they would like.
