2 SPEAKERS AND SEMINAR DETAILS Week 1 17/01/ pm Mr Leslie Keegan Chair Before coming to the Bar Leslie worked as a Neurophysiologist. From his early days in practice he worked on a variety of clinical negligence and personal injury cases and he has been instructed by a variety of local authorities to deal with cases involving serious injuries or medical treatment issues relating to children. He lectures to a wide variety of professional and lay people on clinical negligence issues and devises and organises medicolegal courses for lawyers and doctors which have been widely acclaimed. He is described in Chambers & Partners as having a brilliant mind for quantum and in Legal 500 as impressive and knowledgeable. Leslie is a member of the editorial board of Facts and Figures, and regularly contributes case reports on issues of procedure and quantum to a wide variety of journals. He is also a Member of the Education and Training Committee; the Pupillage Subcommittee and the CPD Subcommittee of the Bar Standards Board. Professor Graeme Poston Bile duct injuries during cholecystectomy Graeme Poston was appointed consultant hepato-biliary surgeon at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital in 1990, moving in 2004 to University Hospital Aintree (UHA), Liverpool, UK where he is Professor of Surgery of the University of Liverpool, Director of Surgery, Chairman of the Mersey and Cheshire Hepatobiliary Cancer Specialist Multidisciplinary Team, and Director of the Northwestern Supra-Regional Hepato-Biliary Centre. To date, he has personally performed over 800 major liver and biliary resections (mainly for metastatic colorectal cancer). His unit at UHA is one of the largest resectional hepato-biliary practices in the UK, undertaking in excess of 250 major liver resections each year. Mr Michael Pearse General orthopaedic trauma (common fractures & joint injuries) including compartment syndrome: hip and knee joint replacement Michael Pearse has been a consultant orthopaedic and trauma surgeon for almost 20 years. He has extensive experience in general orthopaedics and he is a recognised specialist in orthopaedic trauma and hip replacement surgery. He also has an interest in upper limb conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome and trigger fingers and he treats many patients with foot and ankle disorders. Mr Pearse works as an NHS consultant at Imperial College Trust (Charing Cross Hospital), and North-West London Trust (Central Middlesex Hospital). Dr Peter Ellis Update on inquest reform Dr Peter Ellis is instructed by many of the UK's leading firms on complex clinical negligence cases, including obstetric and other brain and spinal cord injury claims. His practice benefits from his experience as a former hospital doctor specialising in internal medicine. Dr Ellis is also in great demand for his expertise in relation to coroners' inquests, where he uses his experience as an Assistant Deputy Coroner in London since He is regularly instructed in complex healthcare cases, including cases involving medicinal products and devices, deaths in nursing homes, and fatal accidents where issues of sub-standard medical care arise.
3 Week 2 24/01/ pm Ms Peta Longstaff Accident & Emergency Ms Longstaff has been an Accident & Emergency Consultant for the last 24 years and has worked in various departments, although her two longest serving jobs have been a 10 year stint at Ealing Hospital, and 14 years at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital. She has been extensively involved in training junior doctors and introducing risk management systems. Ms Longstaff also provided numerous expert opinions both for defendants and claimants. Recently she has become an Assistant Medical Director for the London Ambulance Service. Mr Ronan Dardis Unresolved issues in management of Subarachnoid Haemorrhage Ronan Dardis is a consultant neurosurgeon at UHCW specialising in brain trauma, spinal conditions including trauma, and brain tumours (neuro-oncology). He has wider interests in human physiology and spinal biomechanics having completed an MSc in orthopaedic engineering. He is also interested in medical law and undertook an MPhil, the thesis entitled The criminalisation of fatal medical mishap. Mr Timothy Meakin Causation in Subarachnoid Haemorrhage cases Tim s experience in clinical negligence and healthcare work is extensive. His practice has developed to a point where he now routinely deals with maximum severity injury claims. This area of work includes; neonatal and perinatal injuries, neurology, obstetrics, gynaecology and fetal medicine, general surgery, orthopaedics, general practice, and oncology. Tim has a special interest in birth related injuries and associated severe brain injury cases. He regularly deals with high value and complex claims on both liability and quantum. He acts for both claimants and defendant organisations. Week 3 31/01/ pm Dr Roger Slater Critical Care Casebook - practical aspects of anaesthesia and intensive care Roger has been a consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care in the Central Manchester Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust since He has particular special interests in the anaesthetic aspects of critical care medicine (ARDS and ventilator strategies), day case surgery, ophthalmic, orbital and oculoplastic surgery, ENT, sedation techniques, early warning scoring and critical care outreach. He has published peer review papers and articles and is experienced in providing expert witness reports in his specialities.
4 Ms Charlene Francois A Midwife s Tale With 28 years experience in midwifery, Charlene is instructed as an Expert across the UK. She works regularly as a jobbing midwife in her local district general hospital, and has worked in small, stand alone midwifery units to tertiary referral hospitals. Charlene was the Director of Midwifery & Gynaecology at St. Georges Hospital in London. Charlene has worked as an expert witness for 16 years, has a great interest in medico-legal work, and holds a LL.M. Ms Vanessa Marshall Legal Update With a career as a Registered General Nurse at a London teaching hospital before coming to the Bar, Vanessa s practice now has a particular focus on any case involving medical issues. Her practice straddles both the civil and criminal jurisdictions, offering not only the discipline and detail that civil paperwork brings, but also the skills and experience gained as a criminal advocate. Week 4 07/02/ pm Dr Michael Isaac Is the child father of the man? Psychiatric consequences in adults abused in childhood Dr Michael Isaac is a Consultant Psychiatrist. He specializes in liaison (General Hospital Consultation) Psychiatry in addition to Adult General Psychiatry, and has special interests in chronic pain, psychosomatic disorders, mood disorders (especially depression), forensic psychiatry and neuropsychiatry, including the neuropsychiatric aspects of brain and spinal cord injury. He is actively involved in research in these areas, and has published numerous scientific papers and given lectures in many countries. Dr Richard Hardie Medico-legal aspects of stroke Dr Richard Hardie is a Consultant Neurologist at the Regional Neurosciences Centre at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol, and Honorary Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of the University of Bristol. He has a special interest in cerebrovascular diseases. Dr Hardie is also a part-time Medical Member for the Appeals Tribunal dealing with War Pensions and Armed Forces Compensation. Mr Hugh Preston QC Proving facts in awkward cases Hugh has a specialist Claimant clinical negligence practice, which represents the bulk of his work. He is regularly instructed in highly complex and very high value birth injury claims, and was frequently instructed without a leader against Queens Counsel prior to taking silk. By way of example, one of his birth injury cases has been valued at 10-12m. Hugh also has wide experience of the full range of clinical negligence claims including abdominal surgery, cauda equina syndrome cases, dental negligence, cancer cases, consent issues, general orthopaedic surgery etc.
5 Week 5 14/02/ pm Professor Jagdeep Nanchatal Negligence in reconstructive plastic surgery Jagdeep Nanchahal is the Professor of Hand, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology, University of Oxford. His clinical interests relate to reconstructive surgery of the upper and lower limb, especially microsurgical reconstruction. He led the group that published the UK 'Standards for the Management of Open Fractures of the Lower Limb' on behalf of the British Plastic and Orthopaedic Associations. In addition, he leads a laboratory research group investigating fibrosis, bone healing and inflammatory arthritis. Mr Simon Wheatley The risks and benefits of cosmetic surgery Simon's principle area of practice is maximum severity personal injury claims and brain damage cases. In clinical negligence, Simon specialises in claims involving injury at birth, cerebral palsy, failure to diagnose, failure to inform, and a variety of procedures including laparotomy and laparoscopy. He also appears on behalf of medical and other professionals in disciplinary proceedings. Week 6 21/02/ pm Professor Patricia Price Tumour growth rates in oncology and how to assess impact of delay in diagnosis of cancer Professor Patricia Price trained in general medicine in Cambridge and in oncology at the Royal Marsden Hospital & Institute of Cancer Research. She was a clinical academic at Hammersmith Hospital and later in 2000 she established the first Ralston Paterson Chair in Radiation Oncology and set up the new Wolfson Molecular Imaging Centre at the University of Manchester. She returned to Imperial College in 2010 as visiting professor in Oncology. She has specialised in chemotherapy and radiotherapy cancer treatment over the last 22 years. She has a particular interest in cancer biology and growth rates of tumours. Patricia has dealt with over 700 medico-legal reports over the last 20 years and lectured on oncology medico-legal cases to solicitors, the AVMA and the MDU. Mr Simeon Maskrey QC Please sir, what's a trial? Simeon specializes in maximum severity clinical negligence and personal injury cases and in multi-handed product liability work. His widely recognized expertise across all aspects of medical jurisprudence means that he is also instructed in public law, criminal and coroners' courts cases involving challenging medical issues, particularly where the outcome of the case may have an impact on civil liability.
