Museum of Science and Industry Liverpool Road Manchester T: Summer Highlights at the Museum of Science and Industry From steam to graphene, mechanics to robotics the Museum of Science and Industry has summer covered for knee-high scientists, engineers of the future, and innovation enthusiasts of all ages. JUNE: Destination Stations Opens Friday June 24 10am to 5pm Recommended for ages 12 and older Station Building Starting an adventure, saying goodbye or rushing to work. For nearly 200 years, railway stations have been the backdrop to our personal dramas and everyday routines. As passenger expectations have changed, station buildings have developed from the modest to the monumental. They are icons of our changing tastes and technology and have transformed our townscapes forever. Destination Stations offers a glimpse into the expansion of railways, focussed on Manchester and the route to London. Featuring images from the National Railway Museum/Science & Society Picture Library, this display expands on our Revolution Railroad gallery.

Pi: Platform for Investigation Tiny Science Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 July 11am to 5pm Manchester Arndale shopping centre (Exchange Court) Recommended for ages 8 and older Swap shopping for live experiments as Pi: Platform for Investigation leaves the Museum of Science and Industry for the first time and brings impossibly small science to the HUGE Manchester Arndale shopping centre. Delve into the tiny nano-world and discover really small science with researchers from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. Take part in handson, interactive experiments alongside expert engineers and scientists. Clean dirty water using nanoholes, make your own nanojelly out of nanonets and move around like nanoparticles in gases, liquids and solids. Then explore how Manchester scientists produced graphene, the world s first 2D material, and even have a go at it yourself. JULY: Brighter Sound presents: Artistic Directors Series with Anna Meredith Residency: Monday 18 to Thursday 21 July Performance: Wednesday 27 July Brighter Sound presents, in collaboration with the Museum of Science and Industry, an artistic residency directed by acclaimed composer Anna Meredith. Described as "one of the most innovative minds in modern British music" (Pitchfork), Anna is a composer, producer and performer of both acoustic and electronic music. She will lead a four-day residency for young and emerging musicians to collaborate and create new work inspired by the Wonder Materials: Graphene and Beyond exhibition at the museum. The work will be premiered at the Science in The City Late on Wednesday 27 July. Find out more and apply for the residency at: Summer Holiday Fun at Museum of Science and Industry 23 July to 4 September Recommended for ages 6 and older Discover what a roll of sellotape and an HB pencil have to do with a groundbreaking scientific experiment and join our explainers for a jam-packed programme of hands-on and free drop in activities, inspired by the wonders of the world s first two-dimensional wonder material, graphene, and other great

Manchester discoveries. Then, with a head buzzing with new fun facts and a huge thirst for tiny science, pop into the museum s brand new exhibition. Wonder Materials Workshop 2pm to 4pm Explore graphene s amazing, magnetic personality and learn more about the science of attraction. Pop Bottle Microscopes 10am to 12pm Take a close up look at graphite, the building block of graphene, with your own, hand-made microscope. The Revolution Manchester Show 12:30pm and 2:30pm Join us for a whistle-stop race through Manchester science and engineering from steam to graphene. Inventors Wanted 12pm, 1pm and 3pm Meet Salford inventor Hans Reynold, test his new inventions, and see how one of them changed the way we move. Wonder Materials: Graphene and Beyond 23 July 2016 to 25 June 2017 Recommended for ages 5 and older A big exhibition about a tiny new material - Wonder Materials: Graphene and Beyond makes its world premiere at the Museum of Science and Industry this summer. The exhibition tells the story of graphene, the world s first twodimensional wonder material: which was first isolated in Manchester. This ground-breaking show complete with hands-on activities and creative stations - combines science, art and interactive games to reveal the inspiring story of one of the strongest, lightest and most conductive materials in the world.

Science in the City Late Wednesday 27 July 7pm to 10.30pm Over 18s only An adults-only night at the museum, celebrating Science in the City week. Following a four-day artistic residency, acclaimed composer Anna Meredith and a team of young musicians will premiere The Hexagon Experiment, a new commission with Brighter Sound inspired by graphene and the museum s Wonder Materials: Graphene and Beyond exhibition. Treat yourself to a science feast with 3D printed chocolate and insect sushi. Discover tiny science with graphene-inspired jewellery making, and perhaps the tiniest science of all: quantum theory. Plus, take a look at the Wonder Materials exhibition and enjoy a drink from the bar, which will be open all night. AUGUST: MakeFest Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 August 10.30am to 3.30pm Recommended for ages 6 and older MakeFest is back for 2016, taking over the museum for a weekend of coding, crafting and creating. There ll be the big reveal of our Lever Prize project with Liverpool's FACT, mixing the real and the virtual in Minecraft, an appearance from the magnificent Robot Orchestra and lots, lots more. The museum welcomes makers and crafters, tinkerers and artists, from all over the North West and beyond to get visitors involved in DIY science, art, and engineering. Try everything, make something, and get your geek on. Pi: Platform for Investigation Wonder Materials Saturday 27th August 10.30am to 3.30pm Recommended for ages 5 plus What is graphene? How is it made? Can it change our lives? Join us for groundbreaking science as researchers from the National Graphene Institute take over the Platform for Investigation. Discover more about this superstar material by building a graphene layer across our Revolution Manchester gallery. Find out how to produce it in live experiments, then explore how graphene could be used to change the face of modern medicine and chat to our scientists about what their work could mean for our future.

This powerful demonstration introduces the ideas and innovations that sparked a world-wide revolution. Manchester Mills Daily Recommended for ages 7 and older Textiles Gallery What s a flying shuttle? Where s the Devil-Hole? And who s a scavenger? Learn about the shift from manpower to machine power and how the textile industry built our city. This thunderous demonstration of historic mill machinery spins, bobs and weaves cotton into cloth. For further information please contact: Kate Campbell-Payne Communications Officer About the Museum of Science and Industry The Museum of Science and Industry tells the story of where science met industry and the modern world began. Its mission is to inspire all its visitors,

including future scientists and inventors, with the story of how ideas can change the world, from the industrial revolution to today and beyond. Manchester was one of the first global, industrial cities, and its epic rise, decline and resurrection has been echoed in countless other cities around the world. From textiles to computers, the objects and documents held in the museum s collection tell stories of everyday life over the last 200 years, from light bulbs to locomotives. The Museum of Science and Industry is part of the Science Museum Group, a family of museums which also includes the Science Museum in London; the National Railway Museum in York and Shildon; and the National Media Museum in Bradford. The Science Museum Group is devoted to the history and contemporary practice of science, medicine, technology, industry and media. With five million visitors each year and an unrivalled collection, it is the most significant group of museums of science and innovation worldwide.
