1 SANTA CRUZ COUNTY REGIONAL OCCUPATIONAL PROGRAM Metal Fabrication CBEDS Title: Metal Fabrication CBEDS Number: 5608 Career Path: Engineering & Industrial Technology Course Description: This one year course is designed to provide students with entry level skills required in various metalworking occupations. Areas to be covered include: oxygen-acetylene gas welding, metallic inert gas (MIG), stick electrode arc welding processes, spot welding, drafting and blueprint reading, sheet metal forming processes, metal working power tools and hot and cold metal fabrication. Job Titles: Job Title Metal Fabrication DOT codes Prerequisites: Metals I and II COURSE OUTLINE Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the following skills necessary for employment or further education and training: I. Career Preparation Standards (Note: additional hours for Career Preparation Standards are integrated into instruction in content area standards). A. Understand how personal skill development--including positive attitude, honesty, self-confidence, time management, and other positive traits--affect employability. 1. Demonstrate an understanding of classroom policies and procedures. 2. Define business ethics and explain the importance of Hours Classroom 25 Hours Intern

2 ethical standards in the business environment. 3. Discuss the laws that apply to sexual harassment and discuss tactics for handling harassment situations. 4 Discuss importance of personal skills in a business environment i.e. positive attitude, self-confidence, honesty, perseverance, self-discipline. 5. Define personal hygiene and identify acceptable business attire for the industry. 6. Prioritize tasks and meet deadlines. B. Understand principles of effective interpersonal skills, conflict resolution and negotiation. 1. Discuss and demonstrate the dynamics of conflict resolution and negotiation and their importance within the business environment. 2. Work cooperatively, share responsibilities, accept supervision and assume leadership roles. 3. Demonstrate cooperative working relationships and prepare etiquette across gender and cultural groups. C. Understand the importance of good academic skills, critical thinking and problem-solving skills in the workplace. 1. Recognize the importance of good reading, writing, math, and keyboarding skills in the business environment and implement a plan for self-improvement as needed. 2. Apply estimation, measurement and calculation skills to business applications, including whole number math, decimals and fractions, counting and monetary function and use of tables as appropriate to industry. 3. Read, write and give directions. 4. Exhibit critical and creative thinking skills and logical reasoning skills. 5. Recognize problem situations; identify, locate and organize needed information or data; and propose, evaluate and select from alternative solutions. D. Understand principles of effective communication. 1. Read and implement written instructions, technical manuals, written communication and reference books. 2. Present a positive image through verbal and nonverbal communication through use of appropriate methods. 3. Demonstrate proper etiquette in business communications, including an awareness of requisites for international communications (i.e. customs, time zones) 2

Demonstrate writing/editing skills i.e. write, proofread, and edit business correspondence, use correct grammar, punctuation, capitalization, vocabulary and spelling and select appropriate forms of technology for communication. E. Understand occupational safety issues, including avoidance of physical hazards 1. Discuss and implement good safety practices, including avoidance and reporting of physical hazards in the work environment, safe operation of equipment and proper handling of hazardous material. 2. Apply sound ergonomic principles in organizing one s workspace. F. Understand career paths and strategies for obtaining employment 1. Explore career opportunities and projected trends, investigate required education, training and experience, and develop and individual education plan. 2. Identify steps for setting goals and writing personal goals and objectives. 3. Examine aptitudes related to career options; relate personal characteristics and interests to educational and occupational opportunities. 4. Develop job acquisition documents, including job application, resume, appropriate cover and follow-up correspondence and portfolio. 5. Identify and demonstrate effective interviewing techniques. G. Identify and use operating systems. 4. Input and retrieve information. 5. Understand the importance of lifelong learning in adapting to changing technology. II. Working with Metals 10 A. Demonstrate knowledge of Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW). 1. Safely set up SMAW equipment for welding and air carbon arc cutting and gouging. 2. Perform welds in the flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead positions using E6011 electrodes. 3. Perform routine maintenance of the SMAW equipment. 3

4 4. Know SMAW terminology and American Welding Society electrode classifications. 5. Demonstrate inspection of welds using non-destructive techniques. B. Demonstrate knowledge of Oxyacetylene Processes (OAW) Safely set up oxyacetylene equipment. 2. Weld steel with and without filler rod. 3. Weld butt and tee joints in light gauge sheet steel. 4. Perform square groove and fillet welds on light wall tubing. 5. Braze beads, butt and tee joints in light gauge sheet steel. 6. Set up Oxyacetylene equipment for cutting steel plate. 7. Cut straight lines and curves. Pierces and cuts round and square holes in steel plate. 8. Bevel steel plate and pipe for weld preparation. 9. Set up oxyacetylene equipment for use with a multi-flame heating tip. 10. Preheat metal to a given temperature with a heating tip. Use a temple stick crayon to measure correct heat. 11. Inspect welds. C. Demonstrate knowledge of Metal Inert Gas Welding (MIG) Demonstrate functions and maintenance of MIG welding equipment used for manufacturing and maintenance applications. 2. Set up MIG welders to perform welding operations on exercise joints and products. 3. Analyze and apply safe methods for operating welding equipment. 4. Demonstrate safe techniques for setting up equipment to perform welds on exercise joints and products. 5. Demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to work closely with persons of diverse racial ethnic and cultural backgrounds. D. Demonstrate knowledge of Plasma ARC Cutting Set up plasma cutting equipment for cutting ferrous and non-ferrous materials. 2. Cut straight lines and contours, pierce holes and cut square and round shapes to a given size in ferrous and non-ferrous metals. E. Demonstrate fabrication skills Interpret blueprints, sketches, shop drawings and written instructions to manufacture metal products. 2. Use layout instruments such as tape measure, combinations square, dividers, protractor, etc. to measure and locate details and parts of a fabrication. 4

5 3. Make use of geometric construction, parallel line development and radial line development to layout for shape, detail location and set up of metal products. 4. Operate drill press, pan and box folder, foundry, bar folder, squaring sheer, horizontal band saw, vertical band saw, electric grinder, lathe, milling machine, power sheer, bench press. F. Demonstrate knowledge of machine tool fabrication Analyze blueprint and set up materials. 2. Read technical data using charts and manufacturing products. 3. Set up variety of materials and equipment for machine tool fabrication. 4. Face stock, turn stock, neural, central drill, bore, and grind and use form tools. 5. Cut angles using a compound. G. Demonstrate knowledge of foundry Demonstrate safely lighting and turning on foundry. 2. Case hardening, heat treating and annealing ferrous metals. 3. Heating metal to form. 4. Melt and pour metals. 5. Explain various casting processes. 6. Demonstrate proper way to make a sand mold. 7. Use of clay and sand for casting metals. 8. Demonstrate safety in the foundry area. H. Demonstrate knowledge of sheet metal forming Explain the differences between steels and non-ferrous metals. 2. Explain different characteristics of cold roll, hot roll, galvanized and aluminum sheet metals. 3. Read the thickness of a given piece of sheet metal with a thickness gauge. 4. Identify use of the following hand sheet metal cutting tools: squaring shear, combination snips, bulldog snips and aviation snips and scratch awl. 5. Safely and correctly drill a hole through a piece of sheet metal using a drill press. 6. Safely demonstrate the correct set-up, adjustment and use of the bar folder. 7. Use the box and pan brake safely, making all ordinary adjustments for bending sheet metal. 8. Demonstrate the correct set-up, adjustment and use of the forming rolls for forming cylindrical pieces. 5

6 9. Demonstrate uses for the following sheet metal tools: bar folder, box and pan brake and forming rolls. 10. Explain the difference and uses of the following sheet metal seams: grooved seam, Pittsburgh seam, S clip seam, clip on seam, double seam, dovetail seam and standing seam. 11. Construct the following seams: grooved seam, S clip seam, clip joint seam, double seam and dovetail seam. 12. Rivet two pieces of sheet metal together using pop rivets and tinners rivets. 13. Solder two pieces of sheet metal together. 14. Demonstrate the proper use of spot welder.
