1 Fake Bld by Jenny Pwell- Chalmers Frm Schl Jurnal, Part 3, Number 3, 2005 Overview This free- verse pem explres the prcess f creating illusins in films, especially the use f fake bld. These ntes give suggestins fr revisiting the pem fr deeper analysis after students have already read it and understd the prcess it depicts. Yu can use the suggestins in these ntes with a grup r the whle class. Suggested teaching purpses T supprt the students in develping the cmprehensin strategy f analysing and synthesising. T engage the students in thinking mre deeply abut the impact f the devices an authr can use t cnvey their ideas. Suggested learning gal I am learning t identify and discuss devices used by the pet, illustratr, and/r designer have used in this text and hw they have affected my thinking abut illusins that are created in film- making. Success criteria I will be successful when I have: made cnnectins t what I knw abut film- making t help me understand what the pem describes identified devices used by the pet, the illustratr, and/r designer cnvey their ideas discussed the effects f sme thse devices n my ideas abut creating illusins in film- making. Preparatin fr reading The day befre wrking with the students t analyse this pem, have them read the pem r read it t them and ask them t talk t a partner abut what it describes. Encurage them t make cnnectins with their experiences f film, televisin, r theatre and als t infer. Remind the students that pets/illustratrs/designers use varius devices. Ask the students t lk fr examples f sme f these devices as they are reading and t think abut why they have been used. Read the pem t the students again r have them read it with yu t prvide a mdel and help draw their ayentin t the effect f the line breaks. Yu may need t mdel the phrasing in the final stanza. Ask the students t share their understandings f the pem frm their discussins f the previus day and t clarify the prcess the pem describes. Briefly discuss any devices the students have nticed. If yu plan t include the visual aspects f the text in yur analysis, yu will need t clarify that the illustratins and design are interpretatins f what the writer intended and nt cntrlled by the writer. (Analysing and synthesising) Give ut phtcpies f the pem, ne between tw students. Have the students wrk in pairs t highlight sme examples they have nticed and discuss their effects. Listen t their cnversatins as they wrk and prvide supprt where necessary. Fr example, yu culd use prmpts, questins, r mdels, such as: What d yu ntice abut the layut/wrds/punctuatin/sunds here?
