2 GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS Choose frames that are in proportion to your face: opt for a small frame if you have small features, and a large frame for large features. Choose eyewear shapes that contrast with the shape of your face and balance your features. If your face is round, choose angular frames over round styles. If your face has strong or angular lines, opt for rounded styles. Cat-eye frames and other commanding shapes create interesting focal points, with curves and contours that lend a fashionable, trendy touch. Classic frame shapes are more suitable for the less adventuresome. 2

3 Lucky you! The oval face is considered to be the ideal face shape because of its balanced proportions. Almost all eyewear styles suit an oval face so have fun and experiment! Tip: the eyeglass frames should be as wide as, but not wider than, the broadest part of your face. A word of caution: very large shapes can overpower a small face, so choose a style in proportion with your features. 3

5 Diamond-shaped faces are narrow at the temples and jaw line, but have prominent, often dramatic, cheekbones. Aim to create balance at the eye level. Cat-eye shapes or frames with broad, distinctive brow lines are particularly flattering. Avoid narrow shapes. 5

7 Triangle-shaped faces are proportionally wide at the bottom, with a prominent jaw and strong chin. To balance out the face, choose styles that are wider at the top. Large frames, bold colours and square styles with prominent brows work well on this shape. 7

9 Faces with an inverted triangle or heart-shaped face are characterized by a wide forehead and high cheekbones, but a narrow jaw line and chin. To balance the features, choose frames that are wider at the bottom. Try butterfly shapes or rounded frames to soften a wide forehead. Avoid styles that have a marked brow or are wider across the top part of the frame. 9

11 Round faces are as wide as they are long and have soft curves with few, if any, angles. Choose frames that are wider than they are tall, such as a rectangular shapes, or styles with straight, angular lines to create balance and make the face appear thinner. A clear bridge widens the space between the eyes. Avoid round frames. Narrow ovals are a better bet if you like curved styles. 11

13 Like round faces, square faces are usually proportional in length and width, but are more angular, with a strong, prominent jaw line, a square chin and a broad forehead. Choose round or oval eyewear styles to add balance and soften angular features. Cat-eye styles also work well on this shape. Avoid frames with marked angles and square shapes. 13

16 DARK HAIR Congratulations! All colours suit your hair colouring, but be careful not to choose frame colours that are too similar to your skin tone, or frames with a yellow cast if you have olive or golden skin. BLONDE HAIR If you like contrast, opt for dark colours and warm tones: black, dark blue, dark green, tortoiseshell and brown. Avoid colours that are pale and cold, like silver and icy blues, which drain the face of colour. RED AND LIGHT BROWN HAIR Choose khaki greens, blues, browns and tans. Redheads should avoid colours with an orange cast. If your skin is very fair, avoid pale and neutral tones, which can make you look wan. GREY HAIR Choose strong colours that contrast with your hair, such as burgundy, deep brights and black. If opting for metal frames, choose gunmetal over silver or gold. Avoid colours that are too similar to your hair colour: white, light yellow, beige or cream. 16

18 Nose: the glasses must fit comfortably on the bridge of the nose, neither too high and narrow, which creates a space between the nose and the bridge of the glasses, nor too wide, otherwise the glasses will slide down. Styles with metal front frames have nose pads which can be adjusted and fitted to the face, and therefore present a good solution for noses that are hard to fit. Temple: make sure the temples are the right length, with the tips resting comfortably on your ears. Temples that are too long for your face can be bent by an optician to adapt the fit, provided that the temples are metal or have an inner metal bar inside. 18

19 LENS RX-ABILITY Many sunglass styles can have prescription lenses inserted by a qualified optician; these sunglass styles are said to be RX-able (i.e. can be fitted with corrective lenses). Generally speaking, 4 and 6-base lenses (those whose lens radius is 4 or 6) are usually RX-able. These lenses have a relatively flat look. 8-base lenses have a radius of 8, have a more curved appearance and are generally not RX-able, depending on the strength of the prescription. 10-base lenses (those with a radius of 10) are markedly curved and are not recommended for prescriptions. Shields have a one piece lens and are never recommended for prescription lenses, regardless of the base curve.
