1 Social Studies DRAFT #10 Sixth Grade Critical Outcome: Students will demonstrate geography skills, explain ancient cultures of the River Valley and Mediterranean Civilizations, and analyze current events, while integrating the core standards of reading and writing. Geography Power Standard #1: Students will demonstrate and apply geography skills (17A, 17C, 17D) use longitude and latitude lines to find exact places on a map identify the Prime Meridian, Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn, Equator, Arctic Circle, Antarctic Circle, and hemispheres of the world identify and use different types of maps (historical, route, political, population, and physical) identify the Five Themes of Geography identify types of geographical landforms (including, but not limited to: delta, peninsula, isthmus, bay, island, desert, cataract, gulf, tributary, valley, savannah, steppe, coast, mountain pass, and foothills) identify the seven continents and four oceans on a map identify and apply parts of a map (i.e. legend, compass rose, etc.) River Valley Civilizations (Mesopotamia, Egypt, Indus Valley, India, and China) Power Standard #2: Students will explain the ancient cultures of the River Valley Civilizations in order to differentiate among other cultures (15D, 16B, 16D, 16E, 17A, 17C, 17D, 18A) Mesopotamia examine and explain the Neolithic Revolution (the transition from hunting and gathering to farming) and boundaries, such as: Persian Gulf, Mediterranean Sea, Tigris River, Euphrates River, Mesopotamian region, Sumer, and Zagros Mountains analyze the geographical settings of Mesopotamia and how those settings supported

2 explain the social classes of Mesopotamia identify and evaluate the major innovations of Mesopotamia (irrigation methods, wheel, ziggurat, and cuneiform) identify the achievements of Sargon and Hammurabi summarize the religious belief system of Mesopotamia Egypt of Egypt, such as: Nile River, Nile River Delta, and Red Sea analyze the geographical settings of Egypt and how those settings supported explain the social pyramid of Egypt identify and evaluate the major innovations of Egypt (irrigation methods, hieroglyphics, papyrus, mummies, and pyramids) identify the achievements of King Khufu, Queen Hatshepsut, and King Tutankhamen summarize the religious belief system of Egypt Indus Valley of the Indus Valley, such as: Indian subcontinent, Arabian Sea, Indus River, and Himalayas analyze the geographical settings of the Indus Valley and how those settings supported identify and evaluate the major innovations of the Indus Valley (modern plumbing and advanced city layouts) India of India, such as: Indian subcontinent, Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, Himalayas, and Ganges River analyze the geographical settings of India and how those settings supported

3 explain the caste system of India identify and evaluate the major innovations of India (Arabic numerals, medicine, Sanskrit, horses, and migration) identify the achievements of Ashoka summarize the religious belief system of India (i.e. Hinduism and Buddhism) China of China, such as: Huang He (Yellow) River, Yangtze River, Pacific Ocean, and Gobi Desert analyze the geographical settings of China and how those settings supported explain the social structure of China identify and evaluate the major innovations of China (philosophy, Legalism, Great Wall, standardization, Silk Road, printing blocks, and dynasty) identify the achievements of Shi Huangdi, Wu Di, and Confucius summarize the religious belief system of China (i.e. Buddhism, Confucianism, and Daoism) Mediterranean Civilizations (Greece and Rome) Power Standard #3: Students will explain the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean Civilizations in order to differentiate among other cultures (14C, 15D, 16B, 16D, 16E, 17A, 17C, 17D, 18A) Greece of Greece, such as: Balkan Peninsula, Mediterranean Sea, Crete, and Aegean Sea analyze the geographical settings of Greece and how those settings supported compare and contrast the features of Greek city-states (i.e. Athens and Sparta) identify and explain the major innovations of Greece (democracy, Olympics, astronomy, columns, art, philosophy, medicine, and engineering)

4 identify the causes and effects of the Persian and Peloponnesian Wars identify the achievements of Homer, Pericles, Hippocrates, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and Alexander the Great summarize the religious belief system of Greece Rome of Rome, such as: Apennine Peninsula, Mediterranean Sea, Tyrrhenian Sea, and Ionian Sea analyze the geographical settings of Rome and how those settings supported identify and evaluate the three government types in ancient Rome (monarchy, republic, and dictatorship) identify and explain the major innovations of Rome (aqueducts, arch, art, and civil law) identify the causes and effects of the Punic Wars identify the achievements of Hannibal, Julius Caesar, Augustus, Virgil, and Constantine summarize the religious belief system of Rome (i.e. Christianity) Current Events Power Standard #4: Students will engage in meaningful discussions, activities, assignments, and/or projects relative to current event topics facing the community, nation, and world investigate current events on a local, national, and international scale make personal connections and propose ways to become involved
