Ethnic Identity and Men s Etic versus Women s Emic Orientation : Reflections on Social Gender of Ethnic Identity in Contemporary China Shen Ha imei (27) Abstract : Like race, class and st rat um, et hnic group and gender belong to t he basic category t hat is used to analyze human groups. As a popular phenomenon and experience in ethnic identity practice in contemporary China, the up2to2date men and outdated women reflect the gender difference in the identity practice and the contrast between men s etic and women s emic orientation. This is a reflection of the inequality in power between men and women. Keywords : ethnic identity ; etic ; emic ; social gender ; power relationship. Marital Symbols of Zi2Shu2N Li Ningli (36) Abstract : Zi2shu2n,literally, is the woman who wore their own hair as a bun, refers to the woman who adhered to remain single all her life in late 19th and early 20th centuries in a rural area of the Pearl River Delta. In a special hair2wearing rite, the virgin girls took vows that they would never marry. According to old tradition, the bun stands for the status of a married woman. So, this behavior earned them the title of zi2shu2n. The most important reason why this custom was accepted is that it was a marital symbol. The symbol makes celibate women able to seek freedom in contradictory between patriarchal Confucian values and their unorthodox behavior. Keywords : zi2shu2n ;marital symbols ; cult ural adaptation. An Anthropological Study of the Inter2ethnic Relationship in Amdo Liu Xiabei (46) Abstract : This paper uses ant hropological t heories about t he inter2et hnic relationship to analyze t he types of inter2et hnic relationship in Amdo. It t ries to approach to t he complicated context of t he relationships f rom a general perspective. Key words : Amdo ; inter2et hnic relationship ; type analyzing. The Conventional Expressions of the Witness in the Contracts of Ancient Uighur Language Liu Ge (55) Abstract : Some cont ract s are found in ancient Uighur literat ure. Many structural formations and conventional expressions in these contracts are same as those in Han language cont ract s found in Turpan and Dunhuang areas.
