5 Introduction According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): One of every 20 adults who gets pneumonia dies. Almost 10,000 people die each year because of infection of this bacterium. However, a pneumonia vaccine can help protect you against these diseases.

6 What is pneumonia? Is a lung infection caused by bacteria, viruses and fungi The infection may cause inflammation and accumulation of mucus in the lungs; causing difficulty breathing

7 Signs and symptoms Cough Fever Difficulty breathing Chest pain Whistling when breathing Loss of appetite

8 Risk factors Those with a higher risk of contracting pneumonia are people: With a chronic disease, such are respiratory conditions or heart diseases, kidney disease, anemia or diabetes That are recovering from an acute illness Who are in recovery homes or other institutions of care for patients with chronic disorders Over the age of 65

9 How is pneumonia diagnosed? It may be diagnosed through tests, such as: Chest X ray CAT Scan Blood test to verify white blood cells count and the possible presence of a virus Bronchoscopy

10 Chest X Ray Is the most common diagnostic test performed Generate images of the heart, the lungs, the air passages, the blood vessels, the spine cord and the thorax Is an image which helps physicians to diagnose a possible pneumonia

11 Bronchoscopy Bronchoscopy is a procedure by which the physician is able to see the inside of your respiratory track Using sophisticated flexible fiber optic instruments, surgeons can explore the trachea, bronchi of central stem and some of the smaller bronchi

12 Blood test may help determine if you have or not a viral or bacterial infection Blood test

13 CAT Scan A CAT Scan is a procedure in which and X ray machine is used The procedure does not causes pain. In some procedures, the patient drinks a contrast dye that helps the body parts look better on the image

14 Treatment People diagnosed with pneumonia, the physician will prescribe antibiotics to take at home Also the physician will recommend lots of rest and drinking a lot of water Consuming liquids will keep you hydrated and will help remove the mucus from the lungs

15 Prevention Germs which cause many of the different types of respiratory diseases, may be contagious and are transmitted when someone coughs or sneezes Wash your hands frequently, especially after wiping your nose, going to the bathroom, changing diapers and before eating or preparing meals

16 Prevention Do not smoke; tobacco damages the capacity of the lung for fighting infections Use a mask when cleaning areas cover in mildew and fungi Get vaccinated against pneumonia, every 5 years
