1 Weather Vane and Anemometer Category: Physics, Force & Motion Type: Make & Take Rough Parts List: 12 Dowel, ¼ 1 Baseboard, 2x4 1 Wood block, - vane: 4 x ½ x ½ 1 Wood block, top: ½ x ½ x ¼ 4 Small plastic cups 4 Craft sticks 1 Bamboo skewer 1 Binder clip 1 Nut or washer 2 Electrical wires, 12 long 1 Thin nail bit 1 19/64 drill bit 1 Ammeter Drill Paper Electrical tape Video: How To: Drill a 19/64 hole into the baseboard and insert the 12 dowel into the hole. Use a nail bit to drill a hole into one end of the 4 x ½ x ½ wood block.

2 Glue a bamboo skewer into the small hole. Cut and decorate paper into any shape and color you want. Glue the paper onto the skewer. Find and mark the center of mass of the block and paper. Drill a 19/64 hole through the center of mass. Clip a binder clip onto the dowel and place a nut on top of the clip. Slide the long skinny block onto the nut. Strip 1 of insulation off both ends of the electrical wires.

3 Attach 1 end of each wire to the motor. Attach the other end of each wire to an ammeter. Drill a hole with a nail bit into the bottom of the small ½ x ½ block. Glue a craft stick onto each edge of the small block. Glue a plastic cup onto the tip of each craft stick. Squeeze hot glue into the small drilled hole.

4 Push the motor tip into the hole with glue. Tape the motor to the top of the dowel. Place your turbine outside or in front of a fan. The pointer half- way down the dowel should be pointing into the wind. Check how much current or voltage it will create. It should creat more electricity with a higher wind. Fine Points: This small turbine does not produce a large amount of energy, so the ammeter must be able to measure very low current. If you were a professional, wanting to measure true wind speed, you would need a wind tunnel to calibrate this anemometer. You would place this anemometer in the wind tunnel and turn the wind up to, say, 10 mph, then note how much electricity is produced. Then you would check the electricity produced for wind at 20, 30, 40 mph and so on. As it is, we can only show that higher wind will create more electricity. Concepts Involved: Generators take motion and make electricity. Motors take electricity and make motion. Wind is air in motion, and can bring new weather. Fins on an object help to orient it toward the wind.

5 Elaboration: The weather vane in this project points toward the wind for the same reason that rockets and arrows point forward as they fly. The air is pushing on the back of the vane (the sun in this model) with more force than it is pushing on the point. Thus, it pivots to the rear, while the point pivots to the front. You can understand this easily if you try to push it to point in another direction. Very quickly you ll notice that the back of the vane has a large force on it in the direction that will orient it once again pointing into the wind. Years ago people found that this is an easy way to know which way the wind is blowing when you look out the window, and weather vanes were developed into an art form; now you can buy many beautiful and ornate weather vanes. You may not think it important to know which way the wind blows, but when you are trying to predict the weather, it is quite important. Air brings weather, and the wind brings air. If you know from whence the wind blows, you can guess what kind of weather it will bring. Anemometers are used to measure wind speed. The orientation of their cup fins makes it so that it doesn t matter which way the wind is blowing. This is different than most windmills and wind generators, which have to be able to turn and directly face the wind. In this project, the motor is not being powered by a battery like it usually is. Here it is being powered by the wind. Normally, the function of the motor is to take electricity and turn it into motion, but it can also take motion and turn it into electricity like it does here. When it does this, it is acting like a generator. For the anemometer, it doesn t matter that the motor/generator isn t moving very fast. The only purpose is to measure the speed of the wind, so the speed and efficiency of the anemometer don t matter. (This is fortunate, because the motor is not a very good generator.)
