7 XploreIT Event date 1 day event in June Who can apply? Year 5 students. What will the day consist of? The day consists of a range of exciting and exhilerating challenges to promote science, technology and engineering to year 5 students maximising potential at every opportunity. The day will take place at our Hursley Laboratories, the biggest labs in Europe as well as being the birthplace of some of our greatest software developments. Students participate in a number of exciting activities specifically designed to show the possibilities of engineering and technology within a competitive setting. Previous activities include controlling a nano probe around a diseased human body, communicating using encrypted light signals and guiding taxis through congested streets for maximum profit. 9 7 think.it Event date 2 sessions run over 4 days: 2nd 5th July Who can apply? Year 8 girls. What will the day consist of? Attracting female professionals into the IT industry continues to be a challenge. With two separate sessions held over four days, think.it targets one hundred year old girls, aiming to inspire and interest continued study in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The students are set the challenge of inventing a new product based on a given theme, before presenting and marketing their product to a team of judges. To strengthen interpersonal skills and broaden their experience, the girls also participate in a number of fun activities to subliminally teach subjects relating to industry. From planning-based team exercises that convey the importance of project management to logic puzzles that mirror the software development lifecycle, the educational and social content of this activity are beneficial. This event has been successfully run for more than a decade for 14 and 15 year-old students and remains one of IBM s most anticipated annual programmes. Teenage students participate in a number of exciting activities specifically designed to show the possibilities of engineering and technology within a competitive setting. Our diverse portfolio of activities continues to grow, with previous examples involving the controlling of a nano probe around a diseased human body, hacking into a virtual bank account, piloting a spacecraft around gravity wells, communicating using encrypted light signals, and even guiding taxis through congested streets for maximum profit. School teams compete against one another, collecting points in an attempt to win the grand prize and become Blue Fusion Champions! 12 10 Work Experience Event date 2 week placements between May and September. Who can apply? Year 10/11 students. What will the day consist of? Throughout the year, Hursley hosts a large number of work experience students across the various Laboratory areas. The IBM Hursley Work Experience programme adds significant value to students by developing an understanding of the professional environment. The programme immerses participants within all aspects of the working world, through effective communication and hands-on learning. Students are given the opportunity to understand how IBM functions, learn about work processes firsthand, experience social relationships at work, and discover the expectations employees have on their colleagues as well as developing new skills and knowledge applicable to the IT industry. 13 Apprenticeships If you ve decided not to go to University but want to dive straight in to the world of work after college, the IBM Apprenticeship Scheme is the right path for you. The scheme lasts for 2 years and as well as working here at IBM we ll give you the opportunity to continue your learning to enable you to achieve the Advanced Apprenticeship for IT Professionals qualification. Scheme dates We recruit all year round for our apprenticeship scheme. Selection criteria At least 8 GCSE s at grade C or above including Maths and English and at least 2 A-levels (or equivalent) at grade C or above.
