HOW TO USE THIS RESOURCE We live in a world saturated with media, and let s face it, not all of it is positive. It s not often that a great movie comes along with, teachable moments that have direct connections to God s Word. WHEN THE GAME STANDS TALL gives us a chance to move beyond entertainment toward an opportunity for lasting life change. This is why we have partnered with SONY PICTURES to create this resource. WHEN THE GAME STANDS TALL: CONVERSATION STARTERS is a tool to help teenagers have meaningful conversations based on the core themes from the movie. Both the film and the Bible have much to say about teamwork, perseverance, and identity. This resource is designed for youth pastors, small group leaders, and students who want to make an impact. When used together, the movie and conversation starters can provide a great evangelistic opportunity. Challenge your ministry, small group, and friends to see the movie together and have a discussion about it afterwards. Take the challenge even farther by inviting students who don t normally go to church. This resource has three conversation starters. You can use one, two, or all three in any order. Do what is best for your context. While there is no one right way to use this tool, here are a few ideas for you to consider as you custom tailor this resource to fit your ministry: 1. Watch the movie and have an informal discussion afterwards Pick a time for your ministry, small group, or friends to see the movie together. See an earlier showing so you can meet together after the movie to talk about it. 2. Use this resource as curriculum for your small groups If your ministry meets in small groups, have your students watch the movie and then use this resource as your curriculum the following one to three weeks again, you decide what s best for your ministry. 3. Engage families Help your parents win by encouraging them to have a conversation with their son or daughter about this movie. They could see the movie together as a family and talk about it afterwards. Each discussion includes some questions just for parents. No matter how you decide to use this resource, we re excited about what God is going to do in your ministry. Praying for your conversations, Doug Fields, Josh Griffin, and Matt McGill Download Youth Ministry Youth Workers Helping Youth Workers Win
TEAMWORK The De La Salle Spartans did the unthinkable: they didn t just have a winning tradition for 12 seasons, they went undefeated for 151 games. No other team in any sport, ever has had such a dominant record. INCREDIBLE! This kind of accomplishment can t happen without deep and lasting commitment to teamwork. Everyone worked together: coaches, parents, and players. Each individual knew how to set aside his differences to achieve a common goal. The real Bob Ladouceur wrote 1, We were never just about winning, we were built on families, and our town coming together. The most important component of Spartan tradition is our commitment to create a brotherhood among ourselves. This task is bigger, tougher, and more elusive than any opponent we ever face. CONVERSATION (As a group, pick at least two questions to discuss.) q When did you see instances of teamwork during the movie? q Other than sports, what are some other good examples of teamwork? Where do people work together to achieve a common goal? q In your opinion, what qualities make for a great team? What are the essential ingredients? q What are some roadblocks to forming a good team? What does an unhealthy team look like? UNDERSTANDING TEAMWORK Everyone s life is filled with highs and lows. We need significant relationships to live life to the fullest. The right friendships make the difference when we face trials and achieve new triumphs. Our friends are the first people we turn to for support in our struggles and to share the joy of celebration. We are created to share with others. We are designed by God to be a part of his family and to have meaningful relationships with others. We are better together. No one likes to be lonely; life is much better when we are connected with one another. This life isn t a solo act we re called to do life with other believers. So how can we develop the team around us? The Bible has a lot to teach us on this subject, so let s take a look: Share each other s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. If you think you are too important to help someone, you are only fooling yourself. You are not that important. Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won t need to compare yourself to anyone else. For we are each responsible for our own conduct. (Galatians 6:2-5, NIV) 1
CONVERSATION (As a group, pick at least three questions to discuss.) q In your opinion, how does sharing burdens strengthen relationships? q How have your friendships been a benefit to you personally? q Take a moment to think about your role in your friendships: How are you connected with others? Are you doing what needs to be done? Do you need to make more of an effort? What needs to change (if anything)? q What are some ways you can be better at including others and helping them feel like they are on the team? q In your opinion, how does comparing ourselves to others undermine our relationships? q How have you seen a person s pride get in the way of building deeper and more significant friendships? q Let s talk about sharing burdens: Describe a time when you either helped someone else with a burden or someone helped you. What happened? How was it helpful? What did you learn from the experience? q In your opinion, why do you think some people feel like they can handle life on their own? q If you are in a small group with other believers, how has your time together impacted your faith? q This teaching from the Bible talks about caring for other people s burdens while living up to our own personal responsibilities. On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate yourself in both of these areas: caring for others and being responsible? Why did you give yourself that number? PARENTS (As a family, pick at least two questions to discuss) q Have everyone share a favorite moment from the movie. q Parents: share a story from your life where you were a part of a healthy team. q This movie portrayed several different kinds of parents, which one do you most identify with and why? q An athletic team shares common goals; as a family, what would you say are our most important goals? Do you think some of our family s goals need to change? q As a family, how could we be a better team? In what ways could we better support one another?
IDENTITY For the Spartans, winning was important no doubt but it wasn t the most important thing. When De La Salle eventually lost, and their amazing 151-game winning streak was broken, the team fell apart in the locker room. After the game, the players a wide range of powerful emotion. Some were weeping uncontrollably and others were so filled with rage they were throwing their equipment across the room. In the movie, in the midst of this intense and chaotic moment, one of the coaches had some powerful words for the team: Do not let this game define who you are; let your life do that. CONVERSATION (As a group, pick at least two questions to discuss.) q In your opinion, what point was the coach trying to make? q Discovering and defining our personal identity is a journey we all take. In your opinion, what are some ways people go about exploring their identity? q Sometimes we find ourselves in situations that make it difficult for us to just be ourselves. What pressures do we face to be fake? What moves a person to project a false identity to others? q Why do you think acceptance from others is such a strong motivator for many people? UNDERSTANDING IDENTITY We are more than what we do much more. Our actions reveal who we are, but the core of our identity is wrapped up in something much deeper. Many people would have defined De La Salle by their winning record victories and titles yet all of their achievements were simply a byproduct of something deeper: their commitment to be there for one another. The real coach Lad 2 said, Our tradition begins with a commitment. It isn t enough to say I ll show up. We may say we are committed to many things in life, but to what degree? They key is to infuse commitment into everything we stand for and what we do. Losing a game didn t truly mean losing their identity, although it definitely felt like it for many of the players. They were a team, committed to being there for one another this is their true identity. Our identity isn t wrapped up in what we do; our true identity is in Jesus. We ought to believe what God says about us. We re not defined by the opinions of others; we re defined by our failures or even our successes. When you don t know who you are in Jesus, you are vulnerable to believing what other people say about you. Some of us are constantly pretending to be perfect to be accepted by others. Perhaps your struggle is that you feel like a constant disappointment to everyone around you or maybe you are always fighting to be the center of attention because this is where you find your value. We don t have to believe the lies of the world! We can trust the truth that God offers us. The Bible is filled with hundreds of teachings about who we are, but in this conversation, we ll look at just two: Jesus came to give us real life: I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. (John 10:10, NIV) If we are in Jesus, everything is made new: Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! (2 Corinthians 5:17, NIV) 2
CONVERSATION (As a group, pick at least three questions to discuss.) q In your opinion, what does it mean to have your identity in something? What are the kinds of things people put their identity in? q Using only three words, how would you describe who you are? Be as honest as you can! q What is the center of your life, the most important thing? What are your biggest commitments? How would you answer this question if you were being completely honest with yourself? q What is difficult about putting our identity in Jesus? What are the barriers many people face? q Do you feel like you have a full life or do you feel like you are missing out on something more? Why do you feel the way you do? q In your opinion, what does it mean to put your identity in Jesus? q What are some negative thoughts or feelings you have about yourself? What triggers or reminds you of these thoughts and feelings? q Is there an area of your life that you need God to make new? If so, what is it and how can you give God control of this area? PARENTS (As a family, pick at least two questions to discuss) q In your opinion, what are some things that make an impact on our identity? What influences our sense of who we are? q Why is it dangerous to find our identity in performance? What are the risks? q As a family, what is our collective identity? What kind of people do we want to be? q Parents: share a defining moment from your life, a story that really shaped your identity. q How can we be better at promoting a positive, Christ-centered identity in one another? Movie Artwork 2014 CTMG. All Rights Reserved.
PERSEVERANCE Although the De La Salle Spartans had an unprecedented streak of successes an accomplishment no team in any sport has ever duplicated they were no strangers to hardship. After 151 straight wins, they experienced a devastating loss. A star player was shot and lost his life. Coach Ladouceur had a serious health condition that nearly kept him from coaching. In the movie, Coach Bob Ladouceur issues a clear call to persevere: We got lost, caught up in the hype, the glory, and the relentless pressure. That s not who we are, we need to stand back up and find our way again. CONVERSATION (As a group, pick at least two questions to discuss.) q What are some situations in your life that make you want to quit or give up? q In your opinion, why does life hold so many challenges? Shouldn t life be easier? Why can life be so tough sometimes? q Some people face incredible odds and suffer terrible tragedy, but somehow they find a way to stand back up. Why do you think this is? What does it take to be a person who can find their way again? q Think about your friendships: how well do they help or hinder you in the tough times? UNDERSTANDING PERSEVERANCE Everyone needs to develop perseverance, because tough times will come for all of us. It s not a question of IF; it s a question of WHEN. You may not be facing a difficult situation now, but you will in the future. Struggle is a fundamental reality of our world. You can t just show up and hope perseverance happens you need to work hard to achieve it. Why is it so easy to give up? While there are probably many reasons, here are four common reasons people today lack perseverance: We are disconnected from others. We need help from one another we are better together. When we do life alone, it s easy to get discouraged and stay that way. Everyone ought to develop solid relationships with other believers. We are constantly self-sabotaging our lives. We make mistakes, miss the mark, and live selfishly. The Bible calls this sin. We fall short of our own standards, and lose sight of God s standard for living. Perseverance means accepting God s free grace and making an honest commitment to be better. We compromise our hopes and dreams. The great danger of a life without perseverance is that we accept something less than God s design for our lives. He has given each of us a purpose; we are called to do great things! God didn t create us to sit on the bench. When we decide to give up, we re making the statement, It s ok if I live an average life. God doesn t do average. He uniquely created each of us to be amazing. In short, the only way a person can truly persevere and endure the difficult storms of this world is to trust God and stay focused on Jesus.
So let us run the race that is before us and never give up. We should remove from our lives anything that would get in the way and the sin that so easily holds us back. Let us look only to Jesus, the One who began our faith and who makes it perfect. He suffered death on the cross. But he accepted the shame as if it were nothing because of the joy that God put before him. And now he is sitting at the right side of God s throne. Think about Jesus example. He held on while wicked people were doing evil things to him. So do not get tired and stop trying. (Hebrews 12:1-3, NIV) We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. (2 Corinthians 4:7 9, NIV) CONVERSATION (As a group, pick at least three questions to discuss.) q In your opinion, how is perseverance a positive character trait? q What stresses you out the most? Where are you personally struggling? q What could it look like for you to be the friend who helps others in their struggles? How could you be better in this area? q In 2 Corinthians 4:8-9, Paul and his friends vividly describe the kind of troubles they faced. Based on this passage, what was the secret of their perseverance? q Practically speaking, what could it look like to trust that God is with you? How would this change your perspective in the tough times? q What are some ways you make lifer harder for yourself? When was the last time you faced a big consequence as a result of something you said or did? Is this a repeating pattern or habit in your life? q In Hebrews 12:1-3, the author tells us to remove the things that get in the way. For you personally, what are some attitudes, actions, or even relationships that you should consider removing from your life? q Practically speaking, how could you keep focused on Jesus in your daily life? PARENTS (As a family, pick at least two questions to discuss) q Everyone write down his or her definition of perseverance on a notecard (or smartphone app!). When each person is done, everyone shares their definition and why perseverance is an important character trait. q Parents: tell a story from your life about a time when a tough situation called for great perseverance. What did you learn through that experience? q As a family, what are some things you could do to respond better to stress and struggle? The writer of Hebrews encourages us to not get tired and stop trying. How can you do this better? q When you face difficulties, are you more inclined to speak up and share the load, or keep it in and handle it all on your own?
