Chandrasekera, Graduate Instructor, trcf52@mail.missouri.edu 231 Stanley Hall Office Hours: Flexible COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is structured to teach design students the process of generating basic presentation and working drawings through classroom drafting exercises. Using a hands-on studio approach, the course teaches students basic knowledge of architectural drawing principles, construction drawing conventions, two and three dimensional drawing methods, and quality graphic communication skills. A student s technical skills and drawing craftsmanship will be improved through readings, lectures, and drawing exercises. The drawing exercises help students to develop skill and competency in execution of design and working drawings. The skills to create clean, clear, and concise presentation and working drawings based on standard graphic conventions will be developed during the course of the minor assignments. For the final assignments (major project), each student will create a set of working drawings of a house (floor plans, site plan, elevations, sections, axonometric, perspectives) to exhibit their overall technical expertise. Student work will be evaluated for comprehension and execution of professional quality, design and working drawings. Work will also be evaluated for composition (layout), neatness, and accuracy. K., Architectural Graphics, 5th Ed., New York: John Wiley & Sons, Inc., Additional readings will be placed on the course website, on reserve at Ellis Library and/or distributed in class at the instructor s discretion. EQUIPMENT AND ITEMS REQUIRED FOR EVERY CLASS SESSION Drafting tools (listed in the Equipment and Material paragraph below), three-ringed notebook with paper and the required textbook. The notebook will be required to keep all assignments, lecture notes, handouts, etc. as well as for note taking. REQUIREMENTS FOR DRAWING EXERCISES Drawing exercises are required to be submitted by students in the form of original vellum (for minor projects) and blue line prints (for major projects). For blueline prints, all work on the vellum originals must be completed prior to reproduction at the Drawing Reproduction facility listed above. Large format photocopies are not acceptable, except as indicated by the instructor. Additional drawing or noting on the prints is not acceptable. It is advisable to carry drawings in a tube or portfolio folder to protect them

2 from damage. Students will be required to include original drawings from the course in the portfolio of work submitted at the end of the winter semester. EVALUATION AND GRADING Class work (drawing exercises, attendance, reading completion) will be evaluated and will comprise the final course grade as identified below. Regular consultations with the instructor and drawing exercise evaluations will serve as the student s source of evaluation, assessment, and feedback throughout the semester. In addition, students who do not appear to be engaging their work or seem to be falling behind will have an assessment review by the instructor as needed. Students with concerns about any course assignment or problem should contact the instructor to address these concerns. If a student is not comfortable talking with the instructor directly, the department chair or academic advisor should be consulted. Course grades are calculated using the following grading charts: Class participation and attendance 20% of course grade Minor drawing/drafting exercises 30% of course grade Major drawing/drafting exercises 50% of course grade A+: >=100 points A: points A-: points B+: points B: points B-: points C+: points C: points C-: points D: points F: <60 points ATTENDANCE Attendance and active participation is required. READING ASSIGNMENTS Students are expected to complete each assigned reading prior to the next class period as outlined in the Topic Outline paragraph of the syllabus. DRAWING/DRAFTING EXERCISES Unless otherwise noted by the instructor, all drawing exercises are due at the beginning of the next class period. Late assignments are subject to a loss of one grade for each class period that the assignment is late, at the discretion of the instructor. Extra credit assignments may be designated by the instructor during the second half of the semester. Instructor s approval is required for any extra credit assignment. SPECIAL NEED If you anticipate barriers related to the format or requirements of this course, if you have emergency medical information to share with me, or if you need to make arrangements in case the building must be evacuated, please let me know as soon as possible.

EQUIPMENT AND MATERIAL LIST You will need the following drafting equipment and materials for this class: **1. T-square: 36 inch minimum with ink-edge 42 inch is preferred **2. Architectural Scale: triangular with 3, 1-1/2, 1, 1/2, 3/4, 3/8, 1/4, 1/8, 3/16 and 3/32 scales (Make sure you buy the Architectural scale and not the Engineering one) **3. Triangles: 8-10 inch 45 triangle, 8-10 inch 30 /60 triangle *4. Triangles (for lettering): 2-4 inch 45 /45 or 30 /60 *5. Circle template: range of 1/4 to 1-1/2 diameter minimum *6. Furniture / Plumbing Plan Template: toilet and furniture plan shapes 7. French Curve *8. Lettering Guide *9. Lead Compass (professional type) **10. Eraser (Staedtler Mars Plastic or similar recommended) *11. Erasing Shield *12. Drafting Brush 13. Dry Cleaning Pad and/or Drafting Powder **14. Mechanical pencils (0.5, 0.7, 0.9 mm all three required) and Lead Holders **15. Drawing Leads. Weights HB, F, H, 2H for all mechanical pencils **16. Small Vellum Sheets: 8 ½ x 11 tablet (minimum 50 sheets) **17. Drafting Tape: rolls or dots 18. Roll sketch paper: white or yellow, 12 min., 24 preferred 19. Large Vellum Sheets: 1000 H Clear Point 24 x 36 minimum 10 sheets

4 DEPARTMENT AND CAMPUS POLICIES Academic integrity is fundamental to the activities and principles of a university. All members of the academic community must be confident that each person's work has been responsibly and honorably acquired, developed, and presented. Any effort to gain an advantage not given to all students is dishonest whether or not the effort is successful. The academic community regards breaches of the academic integrity rules as extremely serious matters. Sanctions for such a breach may include academic sanctions from the instructor, including failing the course for any violation, to disciplinary sanctions ranging from probation to expulsion. When in doubt about plagiarism, paraphrasing, quoting, collaboration, or any other form of cheating, consult the course instructor. Policies and procedures adopted by the Department of Architectural Studies (see as well as the University of Missouri regulations will be followed. You are encouraged to review these policies and regulations. These regulations apply specifically to this course and the instructor, for any of the following reasons, may drop a student: - Plagiarism: While students are encouraged to cooperate and help one another during study process, all projects and assignments are individually graded and evaluated and must therefore represent independent work. Plagiarism can result in failure of the assignment and possibly the entire class, at the instructor s discretion. - Excessive Absences: Four (4) absences may result in student being dropped from the class, at the instructor s discretion. - Misconduct: as described in the MBook (see ) FACULTY ALLOWING RECORDING University of Missouri System Executive Order No. 38 lays out principles regarding the sanctity of classroom discussions at the university. The policy is described fully in Section of the Collected Rules and Regulations. In this class, students may make audio or video recordings of course activity unless specifically prohibited by the faculty member. However, the redistribution of audio or video recordings of statements or comments from the course to individuals who are not students in the course is prohibited without the express permission of the faculty member and of any students who are recorded. Students found to have violated this policy are subject to discipline in accordance with provisions of Section of the Collected Rules and Regulations of the University of Missouri pertaining to student conduct matters.

5 COURSE ONLINE WEBPAGE The online homepage for the course can be found at the UM Online Blackboard course site at: Click on the Blackboard Login link. To enter the online course, students should enter their PawPrint ID and Password in the blanks and then click the Login button. Be sure to type your ID in all lower-case characters. Type your password in exactly as you normally would. The next screen will show any and all classes with online components that you are enrolled in for this semester. Choose the Title for ArchSt 1200 and you will be transferred to the Homepage for the class. If you have trouble accessing the site, please the instructor (see above) (often the problem is that has not added your address to the class list.
