Helping people find meaning in their role and the motivation to improve. Biographies Paul Hassett, Esq. PRESENTERS Paul Michael Hassett is a member of the firm and Senior Managing Partner of Brown & Kelly, LLP, of Buffalo, New York. He is a Past President of the New York State Bar Association and has served in the House of Delegates since He is a member of the Law Practice Continuity and Leadership Development and Diversity Committees and has served on numerous other New York State Bar Association Committees. He is a Fellow of the New York Bar Foundation and a member of its Board of Directors. Mr. Hassett is a Past-President of the Bar Association of Erie County and of the Erie County Bar Foundation where he served as a member of its Board of Directors for nine years. He has also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Erie County Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project, the Aid to Indigent Prisoners Society and the Erie Institute of Law. He received the Lawyer of the Year Award from the BAEC in June Mr. Hassett is Chairman of the Independent Judicial Election Qualification Commission for the Eighth Judicial District. He is a member of the Board of Governors of the Fee Dispute Resolution Program of the Office of Court Administration. He has been a member of the Executive Council of the National Conference of Bar Presidents, and a former President of the Metropolitan Bar Caucus, both ABA affiliate organizations, and a member of the Dean s Advisory Council of the University at Buffalo Law School. He is currently a member of the Board of Regents of Canisius College. He is also a member of the American Bar Association and served for nine years as a delegate to its House of Delegates from the NYSBA. Mr. Hassett is a native of Buffalo and was graduated from Canisius College (B.S. cum laude, 1962), and Georgetown University Law Center (LL. B., 1965) where he was associate editor of the Georgetown Law Journal. He served as a Captain in the United States Army from 1966 to 1968 and has been associated with Brown & Kelly, LLP and its predecessor firms since that time. His practice is concentrated in probate, estate and trust administration, and general business law. 3

4 PRESENTERS(continued) Roland Smith, Ph.D. Roland Smith is a senior faculty member at the Center for Creative Leadership. His work at the Center includes teaching the Leadership at the Peak (LAP) and other custom programs, serving as a member of the Global Organizational Leadership Development practice group, serving as the lead researcher for the Senior Executive Research Initiative (SERI) and also for the Global Institute for Talent Sustainability (GIFTS). The SERI research is currently looking at several critical topics including: (a) Top management team behavior (leader emergence, strategic influence, etc), (b) Peak performance (individual, team, and organization) and the role of the senior executive in guiding success, leading change, and accelerating transformation, (c) Exploring differences between C-Suite Executives (i.e. CEO, CFO, COO, CIO, CHRO, etc.),and (d) Identifying Differences in senior executive behavior by industry (current focus is on law firms and managing partners within firms). The GIFTS research agenda includes: (a) Global High Impact Succession Management (HISM), (b) Role clarity and role shifting relative to talent sustainability (Orchestrators, Accelerators, Influencers, etc.), (c) Understanding engagement and embeddedness of high potential and top talent, (d) Understanding the return on human capital assets, and (e) Identifying global talent sustainability best practices. Prior to joining the faculty at the Center for Creative Leadership, Roland was co-founder and president of national consulting firm (2000) focused on addressing organizational performance and talent management. Prior to founding his own company, Roland served as president for a human resource consulting firm helping transform it from a mature regional business (founded in 1958) into a successful national force with over 1000 organizational members and clients. Roland has served as a Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award examiner and as a judge for the Louisiana and Idaho Quality Awards.. Roland was also a faculty member and director of the Quality Learning Project (Center for Educational Research) at the University of Idaho where he focused on issues relating to process improvement, organizational and individual learning, competency identification, leadership, human resources, and the implications of trust on organizational performance. Prior to his work with the University of Idaho, Roland worked at a major paper and wood products company in the areas of sales and marketing, production, and strategic planning. Roland received his bachelor s degree in Finance and a masters degree in Instructional/Performance Technology from Boise State University, and his Ph.D. from the University of Idaho. Prior to moving to Colorado from Idaho, Roland served as a faculty member at Albertson College of Idaho teaching courses in entrepreneurship, organizational behavior and human resource management. David C. Wilkes, Esq. David C. Wilkes, Esq., CRE, FRICS is a US and international real estate advisor, concentrating in property taxation and local government finance, complex property valuation, eminent domain, and emerging market tax and mortgage finance, including Islamic Law-compliant mortgages. He is a designated Counselor of Real Estate, and is also a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, admitted through their Eminent Professionals program. He is a Partner in the law firm of Huff Wilkes, LLP. He has served as a Senior Real Estate Advisor working in emerging markets on behalf of the US government, including the Middle East and Eastern Europe. He represents many of the world s largest institutional real estate owners, and lectures and publishes internationally on property tax, local government finance, and valuation. David is an elected Member of the Board of Trustees of The Appraisal Foundation, based in Washington, DC, which is the Congressionally authorized source of national appraisal standards and appraiser qualifications. 4

5 PRESENTERS(continued) David served for six years as Editor-in-Chief of Real Estate Review (New York University), and is currently Editor-in- Chief of the New York State Bar Association Journal. He is a founding member of the Corporate Advisory Council of the International Property Tax Institute (IPTI) and IPTI s Designated Representative to the New York City Tax Commission s Advisory Board; he is also Chairman of the American Bar Association s Property Tax Committee; and Co-Chair of the Westchester County Bar s Tax Certiorari & Condemnation Committee; He is chapter author for several books on taxation and eminent domain, and author of numerous articles and papers on law and tax for professional publications. Mr. Wilkes is the recipient of the International Association of Assessing Officers Distinguished Real Estate Research and Development Award, the Counselors of Real Estate s Ballard Award for Best Article of 2005, and the Westchester County Association s 2008 APEX Award for Advocacy of Tax Reform. Mr. Wilkes received his master s degree in real estate valuation from New York University s Real Estate Institute, where he was awarded the Norman Weinberg Prize for Excellence, graduating first in his class. He received his law degree from the Boston University School of Law, and his undergraduate degree in English Literature from the City University of New York, where he graduated first in his class. FROM NEW YORK CITY (EAST SIDE) Take the FDR Drive North, across the Willis Avenue Bridge onto the Major Deegan Expressway North (I-87) The Major Deegan will turn into the NY State Thruway (I-87) Take the NY State Thruway North towards the Tappan Zee Bridge to Exit 9 IN WESTCHESTER*. As you near the Tappan Zee Bridge, I-87 North merges with I-287 West, take Exit 9 Tarrytown. (Exit 9 is the last exit before the bridge. Please note, the exit numbers are ordered strangely. Exit 9 is after Exit 1) Turn left at end of exit ramp onto Route 119 West. Go the first traffic light (Route 9) and turn left * Do not get off at Exit 9 in the Bronx. Continue north until the last exit before the Tappan Zee Bridge. FROM NEW YORK CITY (WEST SIDE) Take the West Side Highway north (9A North) which will turn into the Henry Hudson Parkway and then Saw Mill River Parkway North Take the Saw Mill Parkway north to the NY State Thruway (I-87 North)/Tappan Zee Bridge (I-287 West) exit Take the NY State Thruway North/I-287 West to Exit 9 Tarrytown. (Exit 9 is the last exit before the bridge. Please note, the exit numbers are ordered strangely. Exit 9 is after Exit 1) Turn left at end of exit ramp onto Route 119 West. Go the first traffic light (Route 9) and turn left FROM NEW JERSEY Drive North or South on the Palisades or Garden State Parkways, to the NY State Thruway South (I-87) Cross the Tappan Zee Bridge. After toll booth, immediately exit at Exit 9 Tarrytown. (first exit on right after toll) 5

6 DIRECTIONS (continued) At the end of the exit ramp, make a left off the exit onto Route 9 South Proceed to second traffic light (first light counts as traffic light even if flashing yellow); about ½ mile and turn left onto East Sunnyside Lane FROM CONNECTICUT Drive South on I-95, I-684 or the Merritt Pkwy to I-287 West Take 287 West towards Tappan Zee Bridge all the way to Exit 1 in Tarrytown (Route 119) and bear right onto Route 119 West Go to intersection of 119 and Route 9 (about 2 miles) turn left at that light onto Route 9 South FROM WESTCHESTER COUNTY AIRPORT Drive South on I-684 to I-287 West (towards Tappan Zee Bridge) Take 287 West towards Tappan Zee Bridge all the way to Exit 1 in Tarrytown (Route 119) and bear right onto Route 119 West Go to intersection and turn left at the light onto Route 9 South FROM LONG ISLAND Take the Throggs Neck or the Whitestone Bridge onto the New England Thruway (I-95) North Take Exit 21 onto I-287 West towards Tappan Zee Bridge Take 287 West towards Tappan Zee Bridge all the way to Exit 1 in Tarrytown (Route 119) and bear right onto Route 119 West Go to intersection of 119 and Route 9 (about 2 miles) turn left at that light onto Route 9 South FROM THE NORTH Take the Taconic State Parkway South to the Saw Mill River Parkway South. Get off Exit 22 (I-287) Tarrytown, bear right this will lead you onto Route 119 West Go to intersection of 119 and Route 9 (about 2 miles) turn left at that light onto Route 9 South TRAIN Train service is available on Metro North (Hudson Line) from Grand Central Station.
