Safety notes 2.1 Basic safety notes Notes and directions given in this manual A fundamental prerequisite for the safe and smooth operation of this system is awareness of the basic safety notes and regulations. This manual contains the essential notes and directions necessary to safe operation of the system. All personnel working with the system must pay due attention to this manual, and in particular to the safety notes. In addition to this, the accident prevention regulations in force at the location in question must be observed. Notes on handling the system The wet pipe alarm valve sets are state of the art and constructed in accordance with the accepted rules of safety engineering practice. The system is only to be used: for its stated purpose in a state corresponding to the correct safety engineering requirements Any faults liable to have an adverse affect on safety must be remedied immediately. Stated purpose The stated purpose of the wet pipe alarm valve sets is that they are exclusively for use as part of a fire extinguishing system in order to supply water. Use for other or additional purposes is not permitted. Minimax GmbH accepts no liability for loss or damage incurred through use for purposes other than the stated purpose. Proper use in accordance with the stated purpose includes: adherence to all the notes and directions given in this manual adherence to the inspection and maintenance instructions Warranty and liability Our "General terms and conditions of sale and delivery" shall be applicable. These shall be made available to the customer no later than the time at which the contract is concluded. Warranty and liability for personal injury or damage to property shall be excluded if these are attributable to one or more of the following causes: Use of the system for a purpose other than the stated purpose. Improper installation, commissioning, operation or maintenance. Operation of the system with defective safety equipment or improperly installed or improperly functioning safety and protective devices. Failure to observe the notes and directions in this manual regarding transport, storage, installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance. Unauthorised structural alterations to the system. Improperly effected repairs. 2.2 Safety regulations Safety equipment All safety devices must be properly fitted and properly functioning before the system is started up at any time. 9 Safety devices may only be removed when the system has been brought to a full standstill and secured against restarting After the installation of spare parts the protective devices must be replaced in accordance with the regulations Informal safety measures In addition to this manual both the general and local accident prevention and environmental protection regulations must be made available and adhered to. Only trained personnel who have been familiarised with the system may carry out work on it Safety measures for normal operation The system must only be operated when all the safety devices are fully functional. Before switching on ensure that no-one is likely to be endangered by the system starting up. Carry out an external check on the system at least once a week for proper functioning and visible signs of damage (see Point 4) Electric hazards Any work on the electric equipment must be carried out by a qualified electrician. Carry out regular checks on the electric equipment. Any loose connections or heatdamaged wires must be fixed or replaced immediately. The control cabinet must always be kept locked. Access must be restricted to authorised personnel with a key or special tools Upkeep and maintenance The prescribed adjustment, maintenance and inspection must be carried out at the stated intervals (see Point 4). Secure all plant, equipment and operating media upstream and downstream from the machine against inadvertent activation. De-energise the system before carrying out any maintenance, inspection or repair work and secure the main switch against inadvertent reactivation. Attach a sign warning against reactivating the switch. Check that all screws and threaded connections have been retightened. On completion of maintenance work check that safety devices are properly functioning Structural changes No structural changes or additions must be made to the machine without the approval of the manufacturer. This also applies to welding work on load bearing members. Components which are not in perfect condition must be replaced immediately. Use only spares and wearing parts supplied by the manufacturer. There is no guarantee that parts obtained from other sources will be designed and manufactured to meet the required standards of strength and safety Cleaning and waste disposal Ensure the proper use and disposal of materials, in particular: when carrying out work on lubrication systems, when using solvents for cleaning purposes. 10 3. Mode of functioning (Fig. 1 and 2) The wet pipe alarm valve set is an assembly consisting of a wet pipe alarm valve, a gate valve and various small fittings. It serves the following purposes: Monitoring of system pressure in the water supply system and sprinkler pipework. Release of extinguishing water in the event of fire or when one or more sprinklers have opened. Activating hydraulic and electric alarms in the event of fire (alarm gong, alarm pressure switch). The wet pipe alarm valve set is normally only for use in areas where there is no risk of freezing, as the pipework is kept full of water down to the last sprinkler. For special applications where there is a risk of freezing (e.g. refrigerated storage facilities) the water can be mixed with a special antifreeze. The wet pipe alarm valve set is rated for nominal pressure PN 16 (only PN 10 for nominal diameter DN 200 with 8 holes) and can be supplied with a flanged connection or a grooved connection (outlet side only). 3.1 Wet pipe alarm valve (NAV) The wet pipe alarm valve (1) is a valve which opens automatically to release extinguishing water when pressure drops in the sprinkler pipework. At the same time it activates a hydraulic alarm gong (12) and transmits an electric signal via the alarm pressure switch (11). In its state of normal operational readiness the valve head (2) seals off not only the main flow of water but also a number of borings in the valve seat (6) which are atmospherically linked with the alarm gong pipe and the drip check valve (5) via the alarm channel. When the sprinklers or the test valve (4) open, pressure in the sprinkler pipework drops, causing the valve head (2) to lift off the valve seat (6) opening the channel to the alarm gong pipe. The water pressure activates the alarm gong (12) which then sounds continuously. At the same time the alarm pressure switch (11) responds, transmitting an electric signal to a permanently manned post (porter, fire brigade, etc.). The strainer (13) fitted in the alarm gong pipe is to prevent blockage of the nozzles in the alarm gong and pressure switch. As a rule, it is unnecessary to fit an additional strainer directly upstream from the alarm gong. The alarm can only be switched off manually at the alarm shut-off valve (16) or by cutting off water supply by means of the gate valve (3) - e.g. after an extinguishing. 3.2 Gate valve The gate valve (3) is fitted between the wet pipe alarm valve (1) and the water supply. When the valve set is in a state of operational readiness the gate valve is open and secured by a strap and padlock. This can be checked by means of a mechanical position indicator. 3.3 By-pass pipe Compensation for pressure fluctuations in the water supply that might otherwise lead to false alarms is assured by the non-return valve (17) and the by-pass pipe (18) in the direction of flow towards the alarm valve (1). Depending on mains pressure, 10 to 40 litres of water per minute can flow through this by-pass without valve head (2) opening. The non-return valve (17) in this by-pass pipe prevents water flowing backwards down the water supply. The shut-off valves (8) and the vent valves (7) enable the non-return valve (17) and the pressure gauges (9) and (10) to be checked and maintenance to be carried out on the by-pass pipe without taking the sprinkler system out of service. 11 3.4 Retard chamber (VZ) The by-pass pipe (18) cannot be fully relied upon to cope with major irregularities in the water supply, e.g. water hammer. In order to preclude false alarms in such cases, the response of the alarm pressure switch (11) can be delayed by installing a retard chamber (15). The retard chamber essentially consists of a casing (capacity approx. 5 litres) with a 2.5 mm diameter throttle on the inlet side. Depending on the pressure in the water supply, this will delay the response of the alarm pressure switch (11) by 10 to 30 seconds. 3.5 Pressure gauges When the system is in a state of operational readiness pressure in the water supply and the sprinkler pipework is equal. The pressure gauges (9) and (10) accordingly indicate the same pressure. A higher pressure is only indicated by the upper pressure gauge (9) if there is a drop in pressure in the water supply below the valve head (2) or an increase in pressure above the valve head (2). 3.6 Drain valve/test valve The drain valve (14) is used to empty the sprinkler pipework after an extinguishing or when the system is taken out of service. The test valve (4) with a K factor of 40 is integrated in the drain valve. Opening the test valve simulates a release of water from the sprinklers, drawing off a quantity Q = K x p depending on water supply pressure and actuating the wet pipe alarm valve set. Example with water supply pressure at 9 bar: Q = 40 9 = 120 l/min As a rule, a test valve with the K factor of the smallest sprinkler installed is fitted at a hydraulically unfavourable point in the sprinkler pipework for the test alarm. 3.7 Drain valve (drip check valve) The drip check valve (5) is installed to automatically drain the alarm gong pipe after an extinguishing or test alarm. This is achieved by means of a permanent aperture with K factor 3. The spherical button is used to increase the K factor to 25 and accelerate drainage. 3.8 Monitoring (ÜWA) In sprinkler systems designated as requiring monitoring the operational readiness position of the alarm shut-off valve (16) and the gate valve (3) must be monitored by electric means. Maintenance regulations for wet pipe alarm valve set In order to assure the safe and reliable operation of the wet pipe alarm valve set, the operating instructions/operating log book prescribe regular maintenance in addition to the usual tests and inspections. The maintenance intervals should be no longer than six months. Functional checks and maintenance are to be carried out as follows: Notify the relevant persons that maintenance work is to be carried out! Carry out a visual check on the general state of the wet pipe alarm valve set and check that valves are in the correct position and are properly secured. Check operating pressures at pressure gauges (9) and (10). Bring about zero setting of pressure gauges (9) and (10) by briefly closing or opening the pressure gauge shut-off valves (8) and vent valves (7) (functional check). Check by-pass pipe (18) and non-returne valve (17) for clear passage by closing pressure gauge shut-off valve (8) and opening the upper vent valve (7): water must be discharged from the vent valve. Check that non-return valve (17) closes correctly. To do this, close the lower pressure gauge shut-off valve (8) and open the lower vent valve (7): when the non-return valve closes no water must be discharged. Open test valve (4) and check alarm devices (alarm pressure switch (11) and alarm gong (12)) for proper functioning. In systems with a retard chamber the length of the delay must be checked. The delay is the time between actuation of the wet pipe alarm valve - visibly indicated by a discharge of water at drip check valve (5) - and the response of the alarm pressure switch (11) on the retard chamber (15). If the delay is too long, i.e.> 30 s, the 2.5 mm diameter throttle must be cleaned or replaced. Close test valve (4) and check the valve head of the wet pipe alarm valve set for integrity of seal. No water must be discharged from drip check valve (5). If the seal on the valve head is not intact the sprinkler system must be drained and maintenance carried out on the wet pipe alarm valve, as described in Section 4.1 below. Check and, if necessary, clean the strainer (13) in the alarm gong pipe. Check the shut-off valves (gate valves, ball valves, drain valve) for integrity of seal and position them for operational readiness. Secure the shut-off valve in position with a strap and padlock. This precaution can be dispensed with in systems with electric monitoring. In systems with electric monitoring the monitoring devices and their transmission systems must be checked at the alarm shut-off valve (16) and the gate valve (3). Page 14 Manual WH30en/ /TB la-ma

15 4.1 Maintenance of wet pipe alarm valve The wet pipe alarm valve is largely maintenance free and must simply be checked for integrity of seal at the half yearly maintenance interval when the wet pipe alarm valve set is subjected to a test alarm. In order to assure perfect functioning, preventive maintenance should be carried out on it annually. This should include cleaning of the inside of the valve as described below: Close the valve set gate valve and drain the sprinkler pipework. Unscrew the inspection cover (5) and clean the inside of the valve. Remove the retaining screws (7), the bearing pin (8) and the complete valve head. Clean the valve head and check the gasket (2) for damage, e.g. crushing, replacing the gasket if necessary. At a pinch, the old gasket can be simply turned over. Check the O-rings (3) on the remaining screws and, if necessary, replace. Re-install the complete valve set by following the above procedure in reverse order. Caution: The mounting of the valve head including bearing pin and retaining screws must be adequately greased. Check the gasket (1) on the inspection cover (5) for damage and, if necessary, replace. Screw the inspection cover back on and return the wet pipe alarm valve set to service in accordance with operating regulations (Section IV). Fig. 3: Wet pipe alarm valve 1. Nonreturn valve (17) is jammed or dirty. Very large fluctuation in pressure (e.g. water hammer) in the water supply line which the by-pass pipe is unable to compensate for. It may be necessary to fit a retard chamber!
