Seven Interactive Studies Asa and Jehoshaphat, Kings of Judah by John Nannery Week One King Asa vs. The Cushites 2 Chronicles 14 Week Two King Asa s Spiritual Reforms 2 Chronicles 15 Week Three King Asa s Decline 2 Chronicles 16 Week Four King Jehoshaphat s Early Years 2 Chronicles 17 Week Five King Jehoshaphat s Reforms 2 Chronicles 19 Week Six Jehoshaphat vs. Moab and Ammon 2 Chronicles 20:1-30 Week Seven King Jehoshaphat s Successor 2 Chronicles 20:31-21:7 Note: The New International Version of the Bible was used in the key verses and in developing the study questions. However any Bible translation may be used to answer the study questions.

Week One "King Asa vs. The Cushites" 2 Chronicles 14 Asa and Jehoshaphat were two good kings among some very bad kings in Judah. Ironically their reigns came back to back. These studies will focus on their reigns. Reflection Question: Has doing good and living right made any difference in your life? Describe how. What are some good things that Asa did when he became king? (see v. 2-6) What reform do you think was the most challenging for Asa? What did the God-given rest allow Asa to do? (see v. 7) The people of Judah and Benjamin were about to do battle with the Cushites. Although no numbers are given, the Cushites are described as having a vast army (v. 9). In light of this, what do you think of Asa s prayer in v. 11? Key Verse: Then Asa called to the Lord his God and said, "Lord, there is no one like you to help the powerless against the mighty. Help us, O Lord our God, for we rely on you, and in your name we have come against this vast army. O Lord, you are our God; do not let man prevail against you." (v. 11) Circle a phrase in this key verse and tell why it is meaningful to you. What is one thing that stands out to you about this great victory over the Cushites? (see v ) Can you remember a great victory that God has given you? Tell us about it.

Week Two "King Asa s Spiritual Reforms" 2 Chronicles 15 Reflection Question: Share a time when you temporarily ignored or disobeyed God, and things did not go so well for you. Azariah came to Asa with a prophetic message. What was it? (see v. 2) Azariah points out that the Lord was the cause of much of Israel s distress and problems (v. 5-6). Why would the Lord bring distress to his chosen people? Why did King Asa take courage when he heard Azariah s prophetic message? (see v. 7-8) What did Asa do that demonstrated his renewed courage? (see v. 8-9) In this great assembly of the Jewish people in Jerusalem, what stands out about how the people responded? (see v ) Are the people in your church or small group responding to God in a similar way? Why or why not? Key Verse: All Judah rejoiced about the oath because they had sworn it wholeheartedly. They sought God eagerly, and he was found by them. So the Lord gave them rest on every side. (v.15) Circle a phrase in this key verse and tell why it is meaningful to you. What are your feelings about how Asa treated his grandmother? Why? (v. 16)

Week Three "King Asa s Decline" 2 Chronicles 16 Reflection Question: Tell a brief story about a person you know who started their Christian life well but didn t finish very well. When Judah was being threatened by King Baasha of the northern kingdom of Israel, what did King Asa do? (see v. 2-3) What was the result of Asa s response to the threat? (v. 4-6) Does a seemingly good result to a problem always please the Lord? Why or why not? According to the seer, Hanani why was the Lord displeased with King Asa? (see v. 7-9) Key Verse: For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. You have done a foolish thing, and from now on you will be at war. (v. 9) Circle a phrase in the key verse and tell why it is meaningful to you. What starts Asa s spiritual decline? (see v. 10) At the end of his life King Asa was afflicted with a severe disease in his feet. How would you describe Asa s spiritual condition at that time? (see v. 12) What have you learned from the life of King Asa?

Week Four "King Jehoshaphat s Early Years" 2 Chronicles 17 Opinion Question: Why are there so many sad stories of people starting the Christian life well but then in later years falling away? Israel was a constant threat to Judah. What did Jehoshaphat do to defend Judah against the northern kingdom of Israel? (see v. 1-2, 12-13) Why did the Lord bless the king in his early years? (see v. 3-4, 6) Why was sending out qualified people, to teach the book of the Law in the towns of Judah, a very good strategy? (see v. 7-9) In v. 10 it says that the fear of the Lord fell on the kingdoms surrounding Judah. How would you define the fear of the Lord? What evidence is there that the surrounding kingdoms had the fear of the Lord? (see v ) Attach a grade (A, B, C, D, or F) to the early years of King Jehoshaphat s reign? Give your reasons for the grade. Reflection Question: Attach a grade (A, B, C, D, or F) to the early years of your Christian experience? Give the reasons for your grade.

Week Five "King Jehoshaphat s Reforms" 2 Chronicles 19 Opinion Question: How can choosing unwholesome friends and acquaintances affect our relationship with the Lord? King Jehoshaphat aligned himself by marriage and military alliance to the wicked king of Israel, Ahab (2 Chronicles 18). Because of this Jehu, the seer had a prophetic message for him. It was a mixed message. What is good and bad in Jehu s message to Jehoshaphat? (see v. 1-3) Reflection Question: It is alright to have non-christian friends but what are some guidelines we should follow in those friendships? Jehoshaphat went out again among his people (v. 4). Why did he do this? Jehoshaphat appointed judges throughout Judah. What instructions does the king give them? (see v. 6-7) Opinion Question: From these instructions to the judges in v. 6-7, which one is most important for our federal and state government officials to follow today? (Note: You can only choose one!) What does Jehoshaphat tell the priests and the Levites in Jerusalem to warn the people about? And why? (see v. 10) Key Verse: Act with courage, and may the Lord be with those who do well. (v. 11) Circle a phrase in the key verse and tell why it is meaningful to you.

Week Six "King Jehoshaphat vs. Moab and Ammon" 2 Chronicles 20:1-30 Opinion Question: Why is the worship of God (praise and adoration through singing and giving thanks) important to our Christian growth and experience? Why was King Jehoshaphat so alarmed about the imminent attack from the Moabites and the Ammonites? (see v. 2, 10-12) As they learned about the imminent attack, what did Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah do? (see v. 3-4) In his prayer King Jehoshaphat reveals his faith in God. In this prayer what stands out to you about his faith? (see v. 6-12) Jahaziel in the power of the Holy Spirit brings a message from God to King Jehoshaphat. What did he tell Jehoshaphat? (see v ) Key Verse: Early in the morning they left for the Desert of Tekoa. As they set out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, "Listen to me, Judah and people of Jerusalem! Have faith in the Lord your God and you will be upheld; have faith in his prophets and you will be successful." (v. 20) Circle a phrase in the key verse and tell why it is meaningful to you. What can we learn about the worship of God from the men of Judah before and after this military battle? see v (before), v (after) What surprised the men of Judah when they arrived at the battleground? (see v )

Week Seven "King Jehoshaphat s Successor" 2 Chronicles 20:31-21:7 Opinion Question: Why is it heartbreaking when the children of Christ-followers do not follow the Lord? Although the reign of Jehoshaphat is regarded as good, what were some things that the king was unable to accomplish? (see 20:32-33) What seemed to be a weakness in the character of King Jehoshaphat? (see 20:35) Reflection Question: What is an area of weakness in your life? Tell about the progress you have seen in overcoming this weakness with the help of God. What was the consequence of Jehoshaphat s poor judgment? (see 20:37) How did King Jehoshaphat treat his seven sons? (see 21:3) What were the first things that Jehoram did as king of Judah? (see 21:4-6) What do his actions tell you about him? Despite the disobedience and evil acts of so many of its kings, why does God not destroy and wipe out the house of David? (see 21:7) What does this tell you about God s promises in the Bible? What is one thing that has spoken to you during this study of King Asa and King Jehoshaphat?
