1 Studieprogram B-BYGG, ENGELSK, 2007 HØST, versjon 08-Aug :11:18 Civil Engineering - Bachelor's Degree Programme Credits: 180 credits Grade name: Bachelor i ingeniørfag Full-time/Part-time: Full-time Introduction The program opens for exciting opportunities for individuals interested in planning, designing townships and buildings and in the design and analysis of structures like bridges, platforms, towers, etc. The program also provides opportunities for working with theories, methods and examples for solving the challenges of the structures of tomorrow. Instruction will include problems from real life and assignments will be carried out in cooperation with private enterprise and public services. Assignments comprise all planning and construction linked to human activity on land and offshore. The bachelor program is a three-year foundation study of 180 ECTS over six semesters. PROGRAM CONTENT, STRUCTURE AND PROGRESSION The program consists of basic courses (50 ECTS), technical courses (75-85 ECTS), electives (15-25), social studies courses (15 ECTS) and a bachelor assignment (15 ECTS). The program has three alternative specializations. Urban development and urban design, Technical planning and Structural Engineering. The basic subjects of mathematics, physics, statistics, chemistry and environmental studies serve as tools for the technological studies. The basic subjects, the social studies subjects and some of the technological subjects are common for all three specializations. The first specialized subject is studied during the second semester. Most subjects require basic knowledge, which largely determine their order and progression. The program ends in the 6th semester with a comprehensive bachelor assignment based on a project in cooperation with a consultant engineering firm, private or public planning agency, construction company, etc. In order to be assigned a topic for a bachelor paper, satisfactory progression must be demonstrated as cited in Regulations for Bachelor's theses. Most of the courses incorporate compulsory calculation and laboratory exercises, semester tests and group work which must be approved. This is specified in the relevant course descriptions which also define the necessary basic knowledge. Students who want to apply for the master degree Programe Industial Asset Management, are recommended to take the electives and BØK105 Micro Economics. The elective course is compulsory for students in five-years Master`s degree programmes, and note that this elective course is part of the admission requirements for entrance to most of the Master`s degree programmes in Technology at UiS. UiS wishes to offer all its programs as planned, but courses still have to be subject to availability of resources and a minimum student enrollment. The course descriptions provide further information on - Class work and instruction - Set texts - Evaluation - Exams URBAN DEVELOPMENT AND URBAN DESIGN / TECHNICAL PLANNING The program is divided into two specializations: Specialization in Urban development and urban design (BU) is devoted to planning and designing of esthetically appealing cities and urban centers. The program looks at different community levels from local street and city blocks to whole municipalities. Specialization in Technical planning (TP) is devoted to general planning and functional and technical planning of road, water and sewage systems. The specializations may be continued by master programs in Urban development and design or in Societal safety or a master program in planning at other universities or colleges. The subjects in these specializations will overlap. Several courses contain assignments that will be adapted to the chosen specialization. This applies to the courses BIB180 Wooden houses (10 ECTS), BIB550 Local Planning (10 ECTS) and BIB370 Road Construction (10 ECTS). The project assignments include actual planning projects and give methodological experience in solving a series of tasks within private and public planning, administration and research. STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING The specialization in Structural Engineering is primarily concerned with the planning of civil engineering structures based on knowledge about load, load bearing systems and use of materials. Central topics are building physics, analysis of external forces, design concrete, steel and timber structures and the structural details. The specialization provides the basis for admission to the master programs Structures and Materials, Offshore Technology - Offshore Systems and Offshore Technology - Industrial Asset Management at UiS, and for other master programs devoted to the study of load bearing constructions. Admission Requirements General university admission requirements + 2FY and 3MX/3MN or one-year preparatory programs for engineers' and maritime college education or technical college. Admission information Instruction is based on knowledge which correspond to 3MX/3MN and 2FY. We therefore recommend applicants to acquire such competence. After admission to the program the students may apply to the faculty for permission to take it as part-time study. National curriculum National Guidelines for Engineer Education establish a nationally uniform professional level and is a guarantor for the unity and recognition of the program independent of institutional profiles.
