17 OPPORTUNITIES FROM GREEN STRATEGIC PROGRAMME (GSP) Alternative and Efficient Fuel Technologies Objective 5.1: 15% reduction in energy demand in the transport sector by 2025 through a series of transport efficiency investments. Modal shift towards public transport, freight to Rail, etc. to reduce demand for energy by the transport sector. Objective 5.2: Reduce dependence on fossil fuels in transport systems. Encourage uptake of efficient and alternatively-powered vehicles such as hybrid, electric and gas powered vehicles, considered infrastructure needs to enable these alternative fuels to be used.

18 DEPARTMENT OF INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT Solar Rooftops It is estimated that the rollout of 300MW in 8 million square meters of roof tops could cost approximately R6 billion (R20 million per MW). The entire cost can be funded through energy savings with a pay-back period of about 7 years. A number of private sector companies are currently exploring opportunities to invest in the establishment of solar panel manufacturing facilities in South Africa. A standard factory producing up to 150MW/year can be set up in period of 6-12 months. Other Opportunities 1. Landfill gas for supplying gas to boilers 2.
