1 Cyber Security in the Mobile Era KEEPING ENTERPRISE DATA SAFE IN THE BYOD ERA.

2 What is Mobile Security? Mobile security is the protection of both personal and business information stored on and transmitted from smartphones, tablets, laptops and other mobile devices. It covers everything from implementing user authentication measures to protecting mobile devices in case of theft or loss to mitigating malware threats.

3 Shifting Mobile Landscape-BYOD Environment According to a 2014 survey by Check Point Software Technologies: 93% of employees have mobile devices connected to their network 71% of enterprises believe that the use of personal mobile devices on their networks is leading to increased security incidents 45% of businesses with less than 1000 employees reported mobile security incident costs exceeding $100,000

4 What Can Be Done? Rather than block access altogether, companies must learn to embrace the beneficial aspects of the mobile environment while protecting enterprise data from security threats. This can be done through: Implementing a Thorough Employee Education Policy Following Mobile Security Best Practices Spreading Awareness of Top Security Risks

5 Employee Education for Mobile Security Existing security training tends to focus around the desktop user because the mobile workforce is still in relative infancy. In order to change this, some new policies must be put into place. Education should include: Information on policies and procedures that are tailored to employee s specific devices, roles and locations. Information on who to contact if an employee believes he or she has identified a security threat or risk. Rules for how to best handle confidential information. Instructions on how employees can take an active role in security.

6 10 Mobile Security Best Practices 1. Define use-case requirements: Different employees will have different mobile information needs (i.e. engineers and marketers). Identify exactly what each department will require on their devices in order to craft a plan that best protects them. (e.g. technical specifications or CRM software). 2. Create an enforceable mobile device security policy: This should address issues such as ownership, personal/professional usage and security. 3. Enforce strong passwords for mobile devices: Furthermore, mobile devices should be used with multiple forms of authentication to make sure that access is limited. 4. Encrypt devices: Wireless communications are especially vulnerable to interception. Most experts recommend encrypting all mobile device communications and using a VPN service to enforce stronger authentication and management opportunities. 5. Utilize remote wipe capabilities: IT staff should have the ability to remotely access and disable devices in the event of loss or theft. 6. Backup devices regularly: Perform regular backup and recovery of confidential information so that you can easily access the most up-to-date version of your files in the event that they are lost. 7. Adhere to vendor best practices: Adhere to the vendor-provided best practices contained in their security guides. 8. Control third party software: The best way to prevent possible compromise is to limit or restrict access to third party software. For BYOD management, companies should require users to log into a remote virtual environment so the information that goes into the device does not stay on it after the session ends. 9. Set unique firewall policies: Unique firewall policies tailored specifically for traffic coming from smartphones limits users access to only the types of data they need. 10. Perform user education: Implement a thorough and continuous employee education policy that teaches employees about mobile device threats and best practices for mobile security.

7 Be Aware of Top Threats Many security risks can be dodged using simple common sense. However, being aware of possible risks and taking the necessary precautions to avoid attacks is the best possible way to protect enterprise data. Some Common Risks Include: Device Loss and Theft: Maintain the same control over your devices as you would over your credit cards Leaky Apps: Implement virus protection and use common sense when clicking through user agreements and purchasing apps in the app store. Unsafe Network Connectivity and Online Behavior: Ideally only connect to enterprise resources through a corporate firewall. Unsecured Wireless networks make devices more vulnerable to attack and could put an entire organization s network at risk. Mobile Phishing and Ransomware: Cyber-criminals attempt to garner personal information from mobile users by employing phishing to trick victims into divulging valuable data over mobile apps and SMS text messages. Instructions on how to detect and report suspicious communications should be covered in employee education. Insecure Wi-Fi and Network Access: Free Wi-Fi networks require no authentication to establish a network connection, creating an amazing opportunity for hackers to get unfettered access to unsecured devices on the same network. Only access corporate data over known networks.

8 Security is a State of Mind Mobile security is just a segment of your business larger security infrastructure. Taking the appropriate steps to safeguard against losses and mitigate risks will allow your employees to take advantage of the benefits that mobile devices bring to the workplace without compromising company information.
